Turf and surf Oct 6, 2022 Oh, my body aches, I literally rolled out of bed onto the floor and crawled to the bathroom. Yes, we’re feeling it this morning, after riding all those miles yesterday. Kirsten is ready to go downstairs for breakfast before me, I’m still trying to get my pants on. While at breakfast we decided to take a nice relaxing walk to village of Traben-Trarbach. The lady at the i told us to go up the Mosel to BernKastel and hike over the vineyards and take the boat taxi back down the Mosel. What could possibly go wrong! We arrived in BernKastel, parked the car, and found the trail. It was well marked like all trails in Germany. The problem was, It was straight up as in 90 degrees straight up. Kirsten ... read more

Good morning, I had my first German breakfast it’s been a long time, brochen, meats, cheeses and a 4 min egg. Did I forget.... German coffee! For our first couple of nights, Kirsten and I decided to stay in the Mosel River valley. It has Bike trails on both sides of the river along with hiking trails. We have always wanted to bicycle along any of Germany’s rivers. So as we were flying across the Atlantic, Kirsten decided that we were going to do it. At breakfast, Kirsten found that the i located in Brauneberg. Americans know it as the Chamber of Commerce. Basically, it’s where you get all the info you want about the village, you’re staying in. Yes! we rented eBikes for the day and off we go toward Trier. We first came into ... read more

WOW!!!! I can’t believe it .... We’re leaving on a jet plane....... This is our FIRST! Trip we have taken in three years. Yep... Three years.... Ok, we’ve gone to the beach and to Pine Mountain for Thanksgiving. But we haven’t gotten on a jet plane in a long time. Hurricane Ian has come and gone, we didn’t lose power nor did any of our houses have major damage; mostly cleanup and Ernie had that under control. Mandy drove us to Orlando airport very early Monday morning, thank you Mandy. I have been monitoring the counts and created a spread sheet with a formula to help pick the best airport to fly out of and get into Frankfurt Germany. The decision was to fly out of DTW (Detroit). We got on the first flight to Detroit ... read more

Today was a highlight: the Rhine Gorge. Forty miles of green hillsides and vineyards with over 40 castles. Some are ruins, some have been preserved; some are actively in use. It was a beautiful day and we were out of deck for most of it. Late in the afternoon, we arrived in Rudesheim where we went to the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments. This is a collection of restored music machines (with drums, pipes, violins, etc) that self play with rolls of paper (like a giant multi-instrument player piano). Fun. We then took a cable car ride up to the Niederwald monument which overlooks the Gorge and the surrounding countryside. There is a massive statue of Germania (an armored woman warrior who represents the German nation). It was built in 1871 to commemorate the unification of ... read more

Today was an easy morning, as we were able to sleep in a little later, grab a quick breakfast in the restaurant as the boat was pulling into the dock at Koblenz. From When we got off the ship, we could see the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and cable cars above us, but we weren’t visiting the fortress, we boarded the bus for a short ride to Marksburg Castle. Originally built in the 12th century, and updated through the 15thcentury, it is one of the only castles on the Rhine that has never been destroyed or fallen into disrepair. It passed through various hands through the centuries until it was donated to the German Castles Association in the 1900’s and became the head office of the association. The head of the German Castles Association actually lives in the ... read more

Ostin päivälipun, jolla pääsin matkustamaan Frankfurtissa ja Mainzissa. Ajelin ensin ratikalla Frankfurtissa. Tehtiin muutaman kilometrin kävely: tuomiokirkko, toinen kirkko, Zitadelle, roomalaisen teatterin rauniot. Syötiin saksalaisessa ravintolassa. Lopuksi viiniä kävelykadulla. Ajoin ratikalla pari pysäkinväliä asemalle. Paluujuna lähti myös myöhässä. Aika hyvin totuin vahvemman maskin käyttöön. Kävin illalla tapaamassa yhden tutun ja ajelin metrolla. Hotelli oli rauhallinen ja hyvällä paikalla. Frankfurfista jäi mukava vaikutelma.... read more

COVID-19 is the global chaos and the hottest topic of 2020. I had unknowingly landed on places where the virus has spread globally. I was lucky enough to make it back to Amsterdam a week before the world went mad about toilet paper. I got pretty sick the day after my arrival back to Amsterdam. I caught the nastiest virus, which knocked me down completely. My stubborn arse went back to work while still feeling unwell, and of course, that stupidity sent my sorry act back home for two weeks of quarantine. During my recovery, I remember people around me were in an extreme panic because of the virus I possibly brought from China while vaccines were still unavailable. My colleagues and GP were terrified of me. They did not want to be anywhere near me. ... read more

Nach ... read more

"when we accept life as it is, we can respond appropriately to the way we are experiencing it, rather than just reacting out of fear and aversion " Ajahn Sumedho My son visited Bernkastel Keus many years ago with his friend and family. They took a friend with them every holiday for company for their boy and this particular year it was my sons turn . He sent a postcard to my mum and she kept it. We found it after she died . The picture was of the half timbered buildings of Bernkastel Kues. I wondered what he thought of this town on the Moselle . Would a 14 year old be impressed? Probably not . We were still in the wine growing region with the vines clinging to the hillsides. We were tootling along. ... read more

We woke up early and headed down river following the lovely Moselle. Joined by hundreds of others who were on the river cruise boat. They were spending a holiday on a boat with many others , being fed and watered and being dropped off at any pretty town along the river. Their days spent sitting in their rooms looking out of their picture windows. The Moselle twists its way from Trier to Koblenz. A beautiful waterway which meanders along with many dams and locks along its way. Above the river are the terraced vineyards which cling precariously to the hillsides. Steep sided valleys that look impossible to grow anything. The grape vines run up the hillside and the small red tractors harvest the grapes. The creep slowly down the hillsides . Vertically - it looks impossible ... read more
