We left France and travelled via train into Luxembourg and then to the township of Cochem in Germany, on the Mosel River. Cochem is like something out of a picture post card - a small medieval town in a lush green valley with a river flowing through the middle, a castle overlooking the town and surrounded by vineyards. We spent the afternoon walking along the Mosel river and then up the hill to the castle. A after overnighting in a B&B, breakfast was had in a large room (with a very large glass window) overlooking the street and view of the river and the town. Mid morning we took the train along the Mosel River and onto Koblenz, on the junction of the Mosel and Rhine rivers. Outside our hotel room there was a street procession ... read more

This is my last night in Germany before heading to Amsterdam tomorrow afternoon. I left Ingo and Munich this morning and took the train to Stuttgart to have lunch with Alex Hoehn´s Mother. I don´t think I ever need to eat again! Everytime I thought we were finished she came out with another plate of goodies! It was great after eating so many sandwiches and pizza in Italy. She is a great cook! She really wanted me to stay there for the night but I didn´t have enough time to do that and catch the boat tomorrow. I wish I had planned to get there a little earlier and spend more time with her. She lives on a beautiful quiet street in a very nice home. Munich was great and I had a chance to meet ... read more

After chipping my way out of the cocoon of ice that engulfed me…Not really, but once again it was darn cold in our room. Once I took a nice hot shower I took a look outside. The weather was truly exquisite. The sun was shining and all the snow had melted. There was evidence of the previous evening’s partying all over the street below me. A broken bottle, bits of confetti and a couple spent bottle rockets littered the usually pristine road. I had no doubt that once the local inhabitants slept off their drunks someone would be out there sweeping it up. I spent a good fifteen minutes trying to pack all my candy, beer and souvenir into my little suitcase. We headed down for breakfast just before 9:00. At first I thought we might ... read more

I wanted to get up early today because of our drive to Belgium. It wasn’t very difficult. Over the course of the night I had almost frozen to death. At one point in the night I went over to feel the radiator and it was stone cold. I had cranked it up all the way but the system must shut off at night. By wearing my sweatpants and sweatshirt and huddling under the thick comforter I survived. When I got out of bed I found Cassie sleeping on the sofa bed in our outer room. She fell asleep watching MTV. She told me she went out there to stay warm but I suspect my snoring drove her out of the room. I assumed the reason it had felt so cold was because of the blizzard we ... read more

I took the night train (sort of) to Frankfurt airport to meet my parents for a one-week jaunt through Germany. Part One of this adventure involves a rental car and the picturesque valles of two rivers, the Rhine and the Mosel. We stayed at Sankt-Goar, on the Rhine, which is home to one of the more impressive castles. Eric and I stayed in Bacharach back in 1999...and we had bikes, no car. We took a ferry one day down the best stretch of river, and spent another day along the Mosel, visiting the still-inhabited castle of the Eltz dukedom, or whatever they are now. New findings: Good wine can be inexpensive! Towns on the Mosel are sleepier than their Rhenish counterparts. The Rhine town of Oberwesel is worth the visit...I would rate it higher than Sankt-Goar, ... read more

Hello everyone, We started our two weeks aboard the Merlijn last Saturday. There are twenty of us along with four crew members on the barge, Gunther our bike mechanicvan driver and Peter, a rather abrasive little German who is our guide. We cycle 35-40 km. per day along the shore of the Rhine through pretty little towns, orchards and vineyards. This area is know for Reisling Wine and they say that the grapes grown on hillsides are the best for this wine. I don't know how they harvest the grapes--some of these slopes have got to be sixty degree angles. The rest of the time is spent in lectures, museum visits and walking tours. We started in the town of Mainz, one of the oldest in Germany. We have learned that so many structures built bý ... read more

Hello everyone, Fussen is a pretty little Bavarian town nestled in the mountains. It was a five hour train ride from Frankfurt. But worth it to visit two amazing castles. The first was Hohenschwangau Castle. It was built in 1833 and used as a summer home and hunting lodge by the Bavarian royal family. It was influenced by The Knight of the Swan(whoever that is) and the literal translation of the name of the castle is 'Land of Swan.' There were swans everywhere--pictures, light fixtures, even the door handles were shaped like swan's heads. Narrow passageways were built into the walls so that the servants could be invisible. They could even feed the stoves from these passageways. The castle had hot and cold running water. It was nice, as castles go, but next I visited Neuschwanstein ... read more

Matt: A lot of my mates in London were surprised when I told them that Ed and I were doing a road trip around Germany over the Easter break. For some reason, the British seem to have a pretty bad opinion of all things German. If you believed them, Germany is a country filled with nothing but humourless BMW drivers who live in dull grey cities and have waning libidos. I guess the whole two wars in one century thing can get you down on a country - even if you did win both! In fact, faced with a barrage of negative comment about wasting our precious four days off, the main thing I was looking forward to was the black A-Class Mercedes we had booked in advance. And so after arriving at Munich and being ... read more

It had only been about a half a year since I (amy) was away from Germany and I was itching to go back! It was soooo beautiful there, the people were kind and I had so many fond memories of the place that I wanted Jeff to witness the grandeur of the country as well. So, in early April I needed to do some more training for my work in Spain and they told me to pick a base in Europe to go to. Duh! Of course I went with Germany. I knew the place. I had friends that were still there. What better place to go back to for a week. My flight was free and we just had to get Jeff a ticket which is always super cheap with the likes of airlines such ... read more
