Day 23 Thursday 8th February 2007 Rode the gondola’s down Mt Pilatus for the last time. We heard later that after lunch that day, they had to close the mountain as it was too windy for the gondolas to operate. Thank goodness we got down otherwise we would have been stuck up the top of the Swiss Alps. We entered back into Germany and travelled down the Rhine Valley along the Rhine River to St Goar. The Rhine Valley is famous for its wine. The vineyards are small and grow on the sides of very steep mountains so looking after the vineyards is mostly completed by hand. A very hard job to complete. Located along the river are many castles, built beside the river as this was once and still is a major trading area. The ... read more

Here is the text that you have already read but here are some pics to go along with it. I will post Heidelberg and Switzerland pics soon!!! Love an miss you guys!! Trier was about a 3 hour train ride from Neubruke. We got there at about 11:30 on Saturday morning. The first thing we saw was a huge foot and we continued to see these feet throughout Trier. I think it was supposed to be a replica of a foot that used to be on a huge statue of Constantine a long time ago. Jules and I licked the toes of one of them. We also saw a site called the Porta Nigra. Trier used to be a completely walled city and the Porta Nigra was the main gate into it. Then we went to ... read more

Hello. Im in Trier, Germany, which is about a 25 minute drive from Luxembourg. It is the oldest city in Germany, with its roots tracing back to over 2000 years ago during the Roman Empire. Jessica, my girlfriends sister, is taking law here at the local university, and so Janina and I decided to swing by before heading back to Mülheim. Since I last wrote, i spent a few more days in Neckarhausen with Janinas family. It was a complete German experience. Every morning I would wake up and walk into Janinas grandmothers dining room. She would be waiting for us with plenty of food and before we could properly wake up we would be stuffed full of food. She even offered us beer, but at 9 or 10 in the morning, I politely declined. We ... read more

DAY 3; This morning we leave Amsterdam on our way to St.Goar but first stopping at Cologne and driving through the Rhine Valley. We get to Cologne in a couple of hours and are happy to see that the Great Christmas Markets are still on and thriving. We are first greeted by the BIGGEST Cathedral in Europe, which is soooo large that even if you lie on the ground to take a photo you still cant get it all in. It is absolutely amazing, i have no idea how they could build something like that so long ago when they haven’t got any of the technology we have today! And its not just that its so big, but there is so much detail in every brick and door way and window, it is truly spectacular!! Anyways ... read more

Geo: 49.9166, 7.89359Today I packed up and left Frankfurt and caught the train to Mainz. I left my bag in a locker at the station and headed for the touristy old part of town. At the end of the street I could see the town's main attraction, the cathedral. The cathedral was surrounded by Christmas markets in the nearby town squares. The Dom was also made of red sand stone and is from the 12th century- Romanesque style. Inside it was okay looking. Spent the next few hours browsing the market stalls and the old town streets. Had a final cup of mulled wine- perfect on a cool day!By now I have had enough of Christmas markets. It was then time to catch the bus to the airport and fly back to London.... read more

According to medieval legend, ‘Before Rome, Trier stood one thousand and three hundred years’. However, according to recorded history, Trier’s history begins around the middle of the first century B.C., when a guy by the name of Julius Caesar conquered Gaul (France, Belgium, Luxemburg and some portions of the Netherlands and Germany) in 51 B.C. and integrated the Moselle Region into the Roman Empire. Not only is Trier Germany’s oldest city, but also it was the “Rome of the North” and, in its heyday in the 4th century A.D., as important and splendid as Rome itself. Trier is still a great city to visit today. In his De Situ Orbis, a description of the then known world, the 1st- century Roman geographer Pomponius Mela called it "urbs opulentissima"--the most opulent city--of the empire. It was ... read more

Having come all the way through Germany without stopping in any small towns, I was determined to get out and see something before leaving. So, I thought the Mosel River valley would be a perfect place to go since I also love German wine, and the Mosel is one of the best places for the Riesling grape to grow. I got up early and caught a train to Koblenz, which is a city located where the Mosel river flows into the Rhine. I had about 2 hours after arriving in Koblenz before my train to Trier was due to leave so I decided to walk to the confluence and check it out. For some reason I figured it was maybe a kilometer each way, but it turned out to be more like 6 round trip. With ... read more

Only 3 nights left on tour. Today we went through the Rhine Valley to St Goar. Most of the morning was spent on the bus and the afternoon was full of fun. After a Rhine River Cruise we went wine tasting and tried the famous ice wine. We also bought a bottle to add to our collection of alcohol from the trip. It was a fun ride back to the hotel as everyone had had a fair bit to drink. We had a nice dinner at the hotel and continued drinking in the bar before we went back to our room to play drinking games. ... read more

Quick Notes: 1. I found that the following is how NOT to make friends in Germany: Waiter: "So, why don't you speak German?" Matt: "Because we won the war" 2. Germans love the sausage. I ordered a plate of assorted sausages and I thought they were pulling my leg with all the different "wursts" they had Headed for the Rhineland because that is where Matts family is from and because its beautiful. we stayed 2 days in bacarach and would highly recommend it. we wandered the streets and ate in cute restaurants. you know how they try to make you think you are in a medieval village in busch gardens but it ends up feeling fake? well this was exactly like that! it was gorgeous. anyway, nothing exciting to report about bacarach, but it was quite ... read more
