We leave tommorrow and will be gone until August 11th. We have rented a car but have not made any reservations at any hotels. This will allow us to be a little more open ended but I have put up a skeleton of a map to show our general route. This will give us the freedom to stop and go wherever we please and stay as long as we would like. We'll call it, "an adventure." We'll keep you posted as we get internet access.... read more

Today was a great day, full of rest. We woke up at 11 a.m., and were able to do a little resting, reading and even yard work with Grandma. It rained, and was a perfect day to just lay inside and read. Grandma fed us well, which is always nice upon returning from rigorous travel, to have a homecooked meal. Wednesday, we leave for our southern Germany trip. Because of the unexpected effect of the pound ($$$$)on our British Isles trip, and different licensing rules for driving among the Czech Republic and Austria, we are "changing" our destinations a little. Our trip will be down to see Bavaria, Switzerland, and some Germany. The trip will, nevertheless, be a wonderful trip, filled with many places we were hoping to see. Prague and Vienna will have to wait ... read more

After checking out of our retrotel in Echternach, Luxembourg, we headed back east into Germany and towards the start of the scenic part of the Rhine River Valley, called the ‘Romantic Rhine’. This area had a fun mix of castles, wine (especially Riesling), and windy roads running along the river. The Rhine River valley was also busy with trains on both sides of the river and barges going up and down. We stayed in St. Goar, one of the first towns we came to (driving north to south). Our hotel, Hotel An Der Fahre, was actually more like a B&B and the friendly hotel owner made us a nice breakfast in the morning and offered some driving tips when we left the next day. We had a bratwurst and sauerkraut lunch in downtown St. Goar ... read more

We got back from Berlin this evening around 5 pm. We came home to a home cooked meal after living on street bratwurst, various pastries, cheese plates, brochen and Nutella for the past three days. We left Berlin at about 8:30 am and the weather (which had been drizzling and cool the whole time we were there) was already in the high 80's. That is a long day in a Fiat Panda with no A/C and 90+ degrees for almost 700 km. At least there are no speed limits on the Autobahn because it almost feels like air conditioning once you get over 140 with the windows down. I do find myself however saying "huh?" a lot after 7 hours of howling winds by my ear. Who needs hearing anyway when you can't understand the ... read more

The slides of Cochem that my parents showed me as a child, did perfect justice to this town. I dreamed of these towns, never thinking I would be so blessed to someday visit them myself. As we drove up to Cochem, which is a tiny little jewel located right by the Mosel River, about 30 to 45 minutes from Koblenz, I was in astonished that this place still looked like the slides my parents shot 30 years back. Cochem had me under a spell, and I would have to say that after Brugge, Cochem is definitely a close second! Cochem is nestled down by the Mosel River, a little traditionally decorated German (tourist) town, but nevertheless, a darling, charming little town. It was a bright sunny day and I felt that we were able to ... read more

July 6, 2007 More fun than Disneyland…no electricity required. I earned my hot apple strudel with ice cream today. I never stopped moving the whole day! We woke up and right after breakfast rented bikes. Our goal was to ride up the Rhine to St. Goar (2 towns away) and explore the local castle called the Rheinfels Castle from the 11th century. Before I tell of this fun day we are now in Germany! Yesterday we left the Netherlands for Germany. We were going on car trips of “no more than 2 hours” said Scott. So far all trips have been 4 ½ hours from one destination to another no matter what…this trip included. When we arrived however I was awe struck at the beauty. We are in the Rhine River valley. It is gorgeous. ... read more

After a long drive from Lucerne we finally arrived in Germany once again in a small town called St. Goar in the Rhine Valley. This is a big wine growing region, where they grow their grapes on the sides of hills to get the optimum amount of sun. We checked into our small hotel, which had possibly the narrowest staircase we’d ever seen especially considering everyone’s suitcases were now bulging at the seams! Our activity for the evening was a wine tasting excursion to sample some of the local wines. JB walked us along the streets and then down some stairs into what literally looked like a sewer! It was dark and cool, which we guess is perfect for a win cellar! A few Ninja turtle jokes were made as we half expected Splinter to jump ... read more

After sleeping til almost noon today (we did stay up until 1 am watching the Princess Diana Concert with Yola) and napping for an hour in the middle of the day, we are pretty much adjusted to the time difference. Well we have arrived in Germany. When we boarded the discount airline at LAX and it was about 100 degrees inside the plane we began to realize why it is a "discount" airline...turns out it was becasue they only had one engine on. The flight didn't seem too long but Kat only slept about 2 hours and I got about 1 hour. Grandma Yola picked us up yesterday in Dusseldorf at 11:30 am and we made the 90 minute drive southwestish to Koblenz. The weather is very overcast and humid but pretty warm. Katherine lasted about 5 minutes once we got to Yola's before she fell asleep. I joined her 10 minutes later. After about 2 hours we woke and had a wonderful meal of Gulasch followed by a dessert that looked like yogurt, smelled ... read more
