Trier, my love... A Guide As you may well know I have been studying this semester in the ancient German town of Trier. I will post a blog sometime in soon about the student life and the university here (in case anyone is interested), but first I want to focus on the town in its historical and cultural aspects. Trier is a beautiful city. There is something so surreal about walking down the high street and catching sight of a magnificent roman gate right in front of you. There is so much to see, from the roman baths and the palace gardens to the imposing roman built gate, the Porta Nigra. I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 months living here and I would love to return someday. I think this is the perfect place to take your ... read more

From Berlin we traverse southwest for near on 6 hours and arrive at Trier, in the Moselle Valley and on the Mosel River. The drive is what our expectations of Germany would be. Vineyards and orchards along with dense forests bordered the freeways and motorways. Abandoned castles are being refurbished into expensive hotels. Now, Trier is regarded as the oldest city in Germany and is a major tourist destination for Germans. Occupied and used as a major fortification, by the Romans around 30 BC it was taken by the Franks in the early century AD. Prior to this, it is believed to have been colonised 2000 BC by an Assyrian Prince. The medieval old town is cobbled stoned and has numerous, large, market squares which are favourably supported by bars, restaurants and cafes. We will stay ... read more

Dave's Updates : Left Boppard early and drove around for a few hours following the Rhine and Mossel rivers. Had a great lunch in a small tourist town overlooking the Mossel and the vineyards on the other side. My first two hour meal here was annoying, the second charming, and now it's back to annoying and probably going to stay there. The food's a lot better than I thought - it's actually really good and reasonably priced. The Rieslings are really, really good. Took the Autobahn for part of the way to Trier and that was a hoot. Got the tiny little VW up to 205 kph / 127 mph. Still got passed by someone in an Audi that had to be doing at least 160 mph. The VW just didn't have anything left to give. ... read more

My friend Marlene I met in Peru in the jungle, I went to stay with her for a while in Trier. I wazs lucky because she met me at Munich station, having been home for the weekend, so I didn't have to take the long rail to Trier by myself! We had a good catch up (and some ice cream) on the train. Marlene is a student at Trier university, she studied biological geography; lots of things about plants, soil and frogs by the sounds of it! She lives in a block of flats near the university, so thats where we headed. She wants to move soon because since she moved in the block is completely covered in scaffolding- she has no windows! She has a flatmate called Andreas who is very friendly! Marlene cooked us ... read more

Monday, June 7th: You’ll never believe what we (well actually, it was my aunt) woke up to this morning? The sewer system had backed up and flooded the basement in the main house! When we woke up, we had no idea that it had happened…like I said before, my aunt is an AMAZING hostess…she never said a word and started cleaning up the terrible mess herself! Apparently, a couple of years previously, the city had come out and worked on the system, on the street, and may have caused the flow to drain at a trickle. Little did my aunt and uncle know this, because they lived in the home with just the two of them, they didn’t use the great quantities of toilet paper that us Americans are used to (probably use the bidet quite ... read more

In March, school started again, and the next vacation shall be in April. In March we met again as a Rotary district and I did some advertising for being an exchange student. I participated in the INSANE festival of Père cent and was pretty much occupied every weekend, as usual. Père Cent is a "festival" for the terminals (seniors) and it is traditionally 100 days before the BAC. The BAC, as I may have mentioned before, is like the ACT/SAT on steroids. It is everything they have EVER learned, and it is a whole weeks worth of testing. At the end of JUNE of all times. In the states, we finish school the first week of June, everyone, no exceptions, seniors included. Most juniors and seniors here dont get out until the first week in July! ... read more
