We get back on our bikes after overdoing the fatty foods and contemporary art of Kassel. The ride is very pleasant as we are finally going downhill! as we follow first the Fulda out of Hessen where it joins the Weser through Lower Saxony en route to the North Sea. The weather is not always sunny but very attractive landscapes and lots of services in pleasant towns as well as moderate temperatures along the route make it quite enjoyable. ... read more

Two things today; I went for a short walk in a German forest and for a bit of a walk around Lüneborg. Lüneborg Lüneborg is a town that dates back to the middle ages and became famous because of it's salt or "white gold" as they say around here. In the middle ages salt was the only way to preserve food so everyone wanted some. So a couple of bright sparks decided that salt was where the money was at and became super wealthy from it. Kind of like todays Saudi oil barons but more like ye olde germanic salt barons... It was a pretty nice place to wander about since the "old town" has been almost completely preserved. I had a nice lunch on the bank of the Ilmenau. Check out the photos... The statue ... read more

After a couple of days in Hannover we got in a nice tour (between showers) around the historic parts of the city. Especially dramatic was the set-up in the old town hall, of 4 models of the entire city of Hannover, dating from about 1600. The last two were in the first half of the 20th century, the 4th one being 1945. Shocking to see the contrast. The ancient churches that have been faithfully rebuilt in the style and materials they were originally made from were amazing.. Due to industrial action in railways, Jeff got half-way from Dusseldorf and missed the connection by one minute! - had to turn around and go back as it was going to be another hour and a half until the next one and it was already 6pm. (damn!) ... read more

Well, train travel really IS the way to go. Had two beautiful trains from Kobenhavn. The route went a different way than I expected and at one stage the train stopped, shut down and seemed to have been evacuated of all but 2 or 3 pax. Then I noticed we were surrounded by large transports - not a hijack but we had driven (very long train) on board a ship and for 45 minutes getting our sea legs all while inside the ship. Next stop, train exits first and we are in Germany. Arrived by tram to near!! our hotel around midnight. We have finally left the land of the midnight sun - Here it actually gets dark. Real dark. A convoy of wheely bags dragged down a cobble road in the dark at midnight makes ... read more

Yesterday afternoon Sarah and I arrived in Braunschweig to meet and stay with Leahs ex boyfriend, Sean ...looking quite American in shorts and flipflops. He picked us up at the train station and gave us the tour of his city. Then wanted to give us a taste of a typical night in The Schweig, as he so fondly calls it. We bbqed on his balcony and even though the grill smoke went right into his upstairs neighbors window, the neighbor just popped his head out to see what we were cooking and gave his approval. Apparently everything starts and ends late in Braunschweig. Seans rowdy group of German friends turned up around 11 to hang out before going out for the evening. It was an eclectic group, with constant chatter in English, German, and Spanish. ... read more

I'm back home! After three months in Guatemala and another three months in Canada I have returned to Germany, now already about three weeks ago. And because I've met so many great people during my travels that unfortunately don't speak German, I think it's time to write an English blog for a change. Three months in Canada. A summary. On June 9th, beginning of the soccer world championship in Germany, I land at Toronto Airport. After a sleepless night I take the first bus towards "Mapleton" of which I've only got a vague idea where it is. Getting off at a gas station as weekend public transport doesn't get me very far I find out I need to head west instead of north. Asking the first person whether he goes that way I'm immediately lucky- and ... read more

So, Germany is the second country that I've ever visited in Europe. This post will be extremely short because I'm typing on a German keyboard and the z and y buttons are switched which is driving me crazy (especially when I have to write the word 'crazy') Anyway, I'm alive and so far Germany is nice - very different from Holland - the only cars on the road are BMWs, VWs, Audis, and MBenz. Everything is clean, manicured, polished and looks brand new. Nina told me Hannover is one of the cities that was rebuilt really fast after the war ended. This explains why it's pretty gray and the buildings are not as pretty and historical and the ones in Holland. Yesterday we went shopping in Hannover (Nina actually lives in a town called Hildesheim which ... read more

I have been bad about writing, because I was trying to wait until I had a lot of pictures. But now, so much time has passed, and I have photos, and I have so much to write I don't know where to begin! So probably I will ramble a good deal in this entry, but I promise lots of photos. We finished our session with Tage Larsen, of the Odin Teatret, yesterday evening around 5. With Tage we worked on a specific way of developing a performance which involves creating a set of actions, and knowing them in your sleep. Also, preparing a text which you could say in your sleep. The two should be unrelated. I mean that you should not think of your text when creating the actions nor should you choose a text ... read more

It's not even on the city listings here. Hannover is the closest city that is listed. However, it does remind me a bit of Columbia, MO, where I went to Stephens. So, that's nice. Tonight we met with all of the participants for the coming two weeks. There are MANY of us. Today was spent working on our own, those of us who had already come form Poland, and it was really very nice. We worked for about five hours, and took some time to do shopping and rest a bit. The days will be very full from here on out, but not terribly long. Our schedule for the next few days will be: 9-10 Warm-up 10- 4 Work session with a lunch break from 1-2 We'll also have some extra work time with Sigmar Schroeder, ... read more

We left Berlin for Hannover, on our homeward journey where we spent a couple of days with my family who were heading off on their own holiday, before we headed back to the UK. We met up with my Dad, Helen, Emily and Jonathan in a site on another lake in a quiet area outside Hannover. As it turned out the site was actually very busy, but not with tourists, more with locals heading to the lakes for a break. We had a great time catching up with them, and had a laugh playing around in a blow up boat in the lake, until after racing to beat an incoming storm marching across the lake, I rowed it up onto the boat ramp and it got a nice puncture in the bottom!, (it was able to ... read more
