Unser Campingplatz in Nürnberg liegt in der Nähe ... read more

We've had a lovely, packed two days in Germany. Yesterday morning we drove to Boppard and after eating and such, we caught a Rhine River cruise. Along our cruise we saw... 4ish castles. We had a river view of the compact, old towns. We got off for an hour and a half at another town along the way and we had the experience of touring the ruins of a castle from the 1200s! It was super awesome, as you can see from the pictures. We went to our campsite, from which we could see the back of the same castle. My dad had the fantastic idea of hiking uphill both ways to the castle, just to see it again. So we did. It was rough. But the views were unbelievable. Today we watched a Rev. Dykstra ... read more

Also herzlichen Dank an Jan & Christine, Anja, Thomas, Mama & Thomas & Lisa, Ralf ... read more

Prague has always been a dream destination, considered by many to be the most beautiful city in Central Europe, a fairy-tale of castles, towers and spires. Even more exciting for me is the fact that I can get there from Germany by train and bus as well as flying – somehow travelling has started feeling a lot more real when it is done on land, and despite my love of long-haul flights I now much prefer spending long hours watching the scenery pass outside the train window. That and sleeping – I never seem to be able to avoid dozing off, or sometimes even falling into a deep slumber for at least part of my journey. Something that is also much easier to do on a 10-hour train ride than on a short flights within the ... read more

Note to self. Get out more. I came out tonight with the intent to have dinner maybe. More to find wireless (free) and to update my phone since I'm still living in a cheap hotel and they dont' have WiFi. I have no real plan. Which can be good. I have found the Skybar. It appears to be on the top floor of the movie theater complex. I think this is a good location. It has a beautiful view of the local cathedral. There are mostly couples here. It begs my usual question of where do single people go to meet people? I have not answered this but at least it know where to go if ever I find a partner to join me. It is literally just up the street from the main train station. ... read more

Berlin Brandenburg Gate was the place to be on NYE 2010, but we didn't adventure out with the locals in the cold. We did see plenty of fireworks though as the local buy great big bags of them and fire them off all day. We spent the day in Potsdam, a town not far from Berlin known famously the Potsdam Conference that was held at Cecilienhof Palace. We visited the palace and got to have a good look at those historic rooms where Churchill then Atlee, Truman and Stalin met. We caught a bus over 'The Bridge of Spies' and through the Sanssouci Park, the Palace built for Frederik II in the mid 1700's. The grounds are reknowned but alas covered in snow, so in the bus we stayed. New year's day we spent at Berlin ... read more

Ashley really wanted to see the German Christmas markets she learned about in school and it was time for a small getaway so we decided to visit Nürnberg for a long weekend. After a long day of travelling, (including a bus from Inverness to Edinburgh; a flight to Munich; and a train to Nürnberg) we arrived a little weary but happy to be back in Germany. Ashley was happy to travel to a place that was familiar and could still navigate her way around the old city. As soon as we got to the main square all we could see was row upon row of stalls selling Christmas ornaments, toys, candles, and anything else you can imagine. Being as it was a Saturday night, it was busy at the market so we walked around the stalls ... read more

Arrival Since Nürnberg (Nuremburg - English spelling) has the most famous Christmas market in Germany, over 150 stalls(!), so Mia and I hatched a plan to meet there and spend a weekend looking for Christmas presents and seeing the town, because neither of us had been. The Deutsche Bahn (German Railways) had problems as usual and Mia almost missed her connecting train, but we both arrived in tact. The German railway system really doesn’t live up to the German stereotypes of “organized” or “efficient”, it seems every trip something goes wrong and the trains are late. Not that I’m saying I could run it any better. One good thing though was that it had snowed Friday all across Germany and when we arrived we were greeted with a completely white Nuremburg. We almost ran into another ... read more

Danube River Cruise This is my 3rd river cruise, and in my opinion AMA Waterways is one of the top river cruise lines. The ship is called the Amadolce, and this is just her second season sailing. The oldest ship in their fleet is only 4 years old, so, AMA Waterways can claim the newest state-of-the-art ships in Europe. They offer the most French Balcony cabins for a more enjoyable cruise. Some of the great advantages are: - this is not a land or cruise but something in between (a floating boutique hotel) - no missed luggage, the airline can send your luggage to the next lock or town but with the big ocean liners it is usually a different country and you can spend a week without your belongs. - No motion for those like ... read more
