Days 38 - 42: Sunday, January 3rd thru Thursday, January 7th, 2010: Pressath, Germany I'm smooshing (it's a word computer, stop telling me I spelled it wrong!) these 5 days together for a couple of reasons. #1 Blissfully, they were a calm 5 days and I didn't take that many pictures until the last day, Thursday and #2 (hehe, "who does #2 work for?") I'm having a hard time remembering what we did do as it is now 1/19/10 and I'm finally writing this. SUNDAY 1/3/10 So, yes, Saturday night was fun and had a good sleep. Woke up Sunday and I was worried that they were one of those families that got up, got dressed, and had breakfast then tackled the day. No, thank God, they're normal and it was an easy going "whenever, whatever" ... read more

Day 37: Saturday, January 2nd, 2010. Prague, Czech Republic to Nuremberg, Germany then to Pressath, Germany ("OMG, just write it already!" That's what I'm saying to myself as I try to get back on track with this blog. So, 16 days later, herrrrrrrrre's Pressath, Germany!) I say goodbye to Susan at 4:20am and head upstairs to the lobby. I settle the bill and the taxi picks me up at 4:30 and I'm at the train station by 4:45am. My train leaves at 5am so I stare at the departure board and find my train number. Next to it is a bunch of information in Czech, and various numbers scattered throughout. I can't figure out what platform is the one I need. I go to 3 different people asking them if they speak English and if they ... read more

Day 3, and once again we sleep until noon, and even then it was hard to get up! Groggy as we were, we pulled ourselves out of bed. Timmo and Judith volunteered to take Carter and Camille to a water park, while Renee and I went exploring in Nürnberg! Wow, the kids were thrilled and Renee and I got to pretend it was our Honeymoon again! Janni had to go back to school, so Timmo dropped Renee, Janni and I off at the Erlangen train station (Hauptbahnhof). Janni taught us how to negotiate the ticket machine, and, most importantly when to buy the local Bavarian family trip ticket. For 25 euros a family of four could travel anywhere in Bavaria for 24 hours! But, the train to Nürnberg was only 2.50 euros, so, we'd use the ... read more

Well, I'd like to say that after we went to bed we all slept peacefully until the next morning.... but that's no where near true. At one point I was up with Camille watching TV at,... oh let's say 4 in the morning. I eventually fell asleep on the couch with her, but she was still wide awake. Once it got light outside and Camille could see it was snowing, that was another big round of surprise and excitement. Well, we all did finally fall asleep by probably 7am local time. At noon Timmo's brother, Janni, arrived and gently woke us all up,... still, *very* hard to get up, and even more difficult getting Carter and Camille up. After a small breakfast (just cereal and fruit), Janni and I went off to the local equivalent of ... read more

We've survived the trip out. Step one accomplished. Renee and I just stayed up all night on Sunday night, packing away. At 4am we woke the kids up and Jacquelyn drove us up to LAX. We arrived by 6am and so we were right on schedule, since our flight was set for a 8:10am departure. We made it through check-in, security, and a quick burger king breakfast. Renee had time to chat with a nice pregnant woman on her way from Hawaii to somewhere in Texas. The plane was a little late, but we made it to Dallas, rode the Skyway Tram around a bit and made it to our flight to Frankfurt with about 10 minutes to spare. The flight to Frankfurt was on the brand new 777! Nice! We boarded at 2:30pm, flew for ... read more

We got up this morning, had some breakfast and then finished our packing, checked our e-mail and headed to the train station. We got there about an hour early, so we picked up some sandwiches for the train. While we were waiting for our track info, this guy in a surgical mask walked up to us and asked if we spoke English. He then was asking us where to buy tickets and proceeded to tell us he "was crazy," and wanted us to go with him to buy tickets. We figured he meant finding the ticket place was driving him crazy, but it worked in both ways. We explained where the tickets were, but wouldn't go with him. When we got on the train it seemed like all the seats were reserved (and it was crowded). ... read more

It´s great to be staying with a friendly face here in Germany! We,ve been exploring Nurnberg today and there´s lots more to see than we thought there would be! The streets are so pretty, mainly cobbled with a river runing through. We walked up the Imperial Castle which had an amazing view then went to the Neues Musuem which had some really funky, modern exhibits - we loved it. There are lots of shops here too and we went in a lovely Cathedral. It´s really good seeing Mel (hi if you´re reading this Mel!) and her boyfriend Rob is really nice (and their new flat!) More exploring now then Munich tomorrow hopefully. Hi to everyone at home. x... read more

One day down! We went to Nürnberg today and surprisingly all went very well. First thing we went to an Internet Café because we found a few flaws in our planning - like no address of booked hostel etc. Then we found lockers and chucked our massive backpacks (mine 14 kg, Sam's 18 kg) - yes we are mad Backpackers - in. We then made our way to the toy museum through the very cute old town of Nürnberg. Every street is called something with König or Kaiser! The toy museum was a bit overrated it was rather boring. From the museum we went up the hill to the pretty little castle - also very cute. It had red-white-red window shutters and on the wooden door we spotted the Austrian flag plus eagle! All of Nürnberg's ... read more

Staying in a nice hostel in Nuremberg, went to Documentation center where Nazi Rallies were held, and is now a museum. Very informative, and learned some interesting things. Second part of day walked around Nuremberg, and then in the evening went to a Karaoke bar with some people from my hostel. Surprisingly most of the songs sung by everyone there were in english.... read more
