June 22, 2006 We left Berlin early, and were able to get on a train that arrived into Nuremberg with plenty of time before the match--U.S. vs. Ghana. The train was packed with Americans, ready to cheer on the team in its match against Ghana. The scene in the station was mad, and we could hardly walk. Americans screaming and cheering on even before anything was ready to began. It was a great atmosphere. The fans from Ghana were humble and their cheers were easily drowned by the other side's. After waiting in line to put our bags away, we grabbed the metro and headed to the stadium. The train was packed, and luckily I was able to grab a seat. Getting off the station, about a fifteen minute walk from Fan Fast, we weren't able ... read more

We didn't buy much but we had a good time looking at the shops ect. Jer and I had some gluwine and Reg made us have some brats. It was a pretty fun time even if we did freeze our butts off! We also had fun in our little town, toasting at the little tent! We spent Christmas and New years here in our apartment. I wish I had the pictures of the fireworks but I can't find them. It was amazing the amount of fireworks for such a small town! We had a good time and can't wait for mor... read more

Days in Nurnberg Monday: A Day of Rest and the Toy Museum Yesterday we didn’t really do all that much so we didn’t dedicate a blog entry for the day. After we woke up we went in search of breakfast. Kel wasn’t feeling very good because of a headache so we needed to get food right away in hopes of making her feel better. While we were searching for place to eat, we stopped and got pretzels. Very cheap, but very good and fulfilling; the pretzels carried us until we found an acceptable place to eat. Once we found an acceptable place we each did breakfast in our own way. Kel had broccoli and cheddar soup while I had toast with honey, butter and jam. Yummy! From there we headed to the Spielzeugmuseum (Toy Museum). ... read more

Nurnberg and Nazi History After breakfast we headed out of Rothenberg on back roads in order to take a more scenic route to Nurnberg. Rothenberg is only an hour a way from Nurnberg so we didn’t get to see much on the trip. Mostly we saw some small towns and green fields. I’m sure later on we will see more countryside as we head towards the Alps. The Hotel and Lunch We arrived at our hotel which is part of a chain of hotels owned by NH, a Spanish company. While the building lacks some of the small town character we like to see in hotels as we travel, the facilities more than make up for the lack of personality. We have a huge king size bed which is the first time we haven’t had ... read more

Last weekend, we went to Nuremberg, Germany to go to the Christmas Market. Every December there are Christmas markets in many German and Austrian cities with traditional food, drinks, and decorations for sale. We chose Nuremberg because it has one of the most famous Christmas markets and because we found a great flight deal to Stuttgart, only a two hour train ride away. When we arrived the first night, we found out that our hotel was celebrating its one year anniversary. They had free drinks and “science experiment” type appetizers prepared by a team of chefs. One of the friendly chefs explained the different foods to us and brought us all sorts of things to try: rose petal soup served in a large fake syringe, coconut “caviar” (the caviar was really just coconut milk dripped into ... read more

We had a four day weekend so on Monday we decided to drive out to Nurnberg with Rick and Rachelle because they hadn't seen it yet and we felt like taking a short trip. We mostly window shopped and just enjoyed the scenery on a beautiful sunny day. There is a castle here we have yet to visit and a zoo that is supposed to be HUGE! Maybe next time. ... read more

Tja, dann wolln wir mal. Erstmal: was mach ich überhaupt?

Well, its been a while since I last made an entry, but only because I have been busy. Having changed my mind on the direction of travelling around Europe, I have now been through northern France, Southern Belgium, Luxembourg (so small I did it all) and am presently working my way across Germany. My campervan is performing well giving me no problems yet. One of the things i planned whilst doing this trip was some mountain biking. I have not gone off road too much, but did find an ausome downhill track in the citadel at Namur in Belgium. I have, however, done lots of cycling as there are some brilliant cycle tracks over here. Also whilst in belgium i completed a 21km paddle down the river Lesse, in a kayak. i would recommend this to ... read more

Well, perhaps 'same procedure as every 4 years' would be more apt. There is a famous short film in Germany, entitled 'Dinner for One'. Although it's in english, adapted from a theatre sketch, it's little known outside Germany, where it's a staple of New Year's Eve TV. The plot loosely revolves around the catchphrase 'Same procedure as last year?' , receiving the response 'Same procedure as every year'. Somehow, this immediately came to mind, when, 4 years after our last visit , the scenes of jubilation we'd witnessed there when Turkey reached the World Cup semi finals were repeated, this time with Italian flags, following their dubious victory over the Socceroos. The road encircling the walled Altstadt of Nurnberg seems to be the perfect place for fans to congregate in their cars, flags flying and horns ... read more

Day 23, 23rd June. Röshof - Großhubersdorf - Nürnberg - Pommelsbruhn We were on the road early again, a lovely day again. We stopped off at a village to finish off last nights pasta on a brötchen. It was a short ride into Nürnberg, a confusing city and very busy until we entered the Altstadt - it was amazingly beautiful. We bought our pepper-sprays here and tried to find bike bits but with no luck. Scot and Rory went to McDonald’s against my advice, paid €5 each (twice the price of last night’s meal I cooked for all of us) and ended up saying it was the most disgusting food they’d tasted for ages, Ha! I stocked up on Spiritus* before the shops closed and we headed off east out of town. Just outside the city ... read more
