We hope that you have enjoyed what has sounded like a great summer at home and now you are headed into our favorite time of the year, Fall. Meanwhile, Guy and I have been busy in Bavaria. The weather when we arrived in Munich was rainy and we delayed our exploration for a day and we were rewarded with a beautiful day to tour the Old City, starting at the Marienplatz as we exited the subway. The Altes Rathaus Carillon was playing and the characters were jousting and dancing with great abandon. We have been using the DK Germany travel book and the walking map thru the Old City gave us the opportunity to wander in and out of churches, shopping areas, gardens, gates and fountains. We enjoyed a Bavarian luncheon at the famous Augustiner Restaurant. ... read more

Our hotel is just inside the Old Town city walls and therefore is very convenient to the cathedrals, the Pegnitz river, most museums, the Castle on the hill and of course eateries, shops and transport. We face the back of the hotel where we have a view of the old city wall, the new museum which we can look into because of its glass facade. We also have a fountain which turns on at 10am and turns off at 10pm. The hexagonal shaped fountain spurts up parallel shafts of water and each section goes up progressively until the fountain has 16 sections of water working, then it suddenly stops and starts again. People, especially children stand in between the shafts of water, squealing delightedly. We have become used to this noise, but are thankful that it ... read more

We had a pleasant, uneventful bus trip to Nuremberg. Locating the bus 'station' in Prague where the coach we were to catch was to leave from was a little challenging . . . there isn't one. Just three bus 'stops' on the derelict side of the Holesovice Nazradi train station. Not sure how we found it but we did thank goodness because more transport issues we don't need. Nuremberg is another beautiful medieval walled city. It also has a wealth of Nazi history including of course the Nuremberg Trials. We spent the morning of our first full day in Nuremberg in Old Town. We walked up to the Imperial Castle, considered to be one of the most important castles of the Holy Roman Empire. It was a fairly punishing 'walk'. . . felt more like a ... read more

Nuremberg may not be the top of everyone’s ‘must see’ list but being what my mum used to call, a ‘Nazi botherer’ it was definitely mine. I was actually very surprised how open the city is about its grim past and has embraced its role in National Socialism and is honest about the way it has moved forward since then. It took 4 and half hours on the train to get from Vienna (at the crack of dawn may I add) and upon arrival I discovered that my hotel was nestled beautifully in the old town, between 2 churches and the red light district! Must make sure I turn the correct way on the way out of the front door then! After getting directions I headed to the nearest tram station and took a tram all ... read more

The sky was still overcast from yesterday when the day dawned but the cloud looked high enough not to produce rain. We will be sorry to be moving on from our apartment on the Mosel River but we have further adventures in Germany and Nurnburg is in our sights today. Our hosts wanted a photo and in their broken English we thought the photo was to be just of them but when it came time to line up they wanted us in it too and got their Denmark visitor to take the photo. With that we were on our way. It was a good distance to go and so we set the GPS on the fastest route knowing it was a good distance whatever route we took. We started out crossing the river and retracing our ... read more

Our plan was to visit the Nuremberg court room and visit the DB (Deutsche Bahn) rail museum. Some had recommended that the train museum was a good one. After shower and morning oblations, we headed for breakfast. There is no hot food served here. But the area was very nicely setup with plenty of bread, boiled egg and cheese choices. There were multiple yogurt varieties. Norbert supplied us with a flask full of coffee which was quite good. Our plan of visiting the above museum went for a toss as we checked the internet and realized these are closed on Tuesdays! This was frustrating. We really wanted to see the Nuremberg Trials' museum. After some research, we found out that there is a Natural history museum of Germany in the old town area. All of old ... read more

After a good breakfast (mini idli, dosa) in plane, we landed in Frankfurt 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Needed to brush our teeth and use the bathroom. We cleared the immigration before heading to baggage claim. I could not convert my dollars to Euro ahead of time. I had to get to an ATM first to rent a cart for the luggage. We inquired and found the ATM. My card did not work! We tried calling the number on the back that was 'call collect' from outside US. For some reason, the operator said that the number rejects calls. We were pretty much stuck not able to use my debit card. This was frustrating initially. I rushed to a nearest money exchange place and converted 100$ to 62 euros. The commission was 5 euros! After checking ... read more

We decided to stay in Nurnberg one night on our way from Prague to Paris. It can be done in one day, but that involves a very close connection. Rather than chance missing our train, we decided to spend one night in this city and catch the train to Paris the next day. The extent of our knowledge of this city was some of the history of the Nurnberg trials after World War II. Several days before beginning our travels I was told "That is where the largest Christmas fair in Europe is held". Fortunately when we got off the train and headed for our hotel we went out the 'wrong' exit and came up right in front of a very lovely and very old part of the city. There was a wonderful city wall and ... read more

We somehow managed to leave Berlin, despite our train being cancelled and being told just to jump on another one.. There go our seat reservations and plans! No need to worry though as it was very smooth and we arrived in Nuremberg only 20mins later than we thought... Chris had the idea to visit Nuremberg Zoo while we were here and Im glad he did.. It was unique walking through a near empty zoo in the snow seeing all the animals. Most bizarelly was seeing kangaroos.. in the snow.. in the zoo.. I dont think kangaroos are built for snow! A second highlight was the tiger that did nothing but roar the whole time we were there, you could hear him from anywhere in the park and when you stood in front of him, he really ... read more
