The sky was still overcast from yesterday when the day dawned but the cloud looked high enough not to produce rain.
We will be sorry to be moving on from our apartment on the Mosel River but we have further adventures in Germany and Nurnburg is in our sights today.
Our hosts wanted a photo and in their broken English we thought the photo was to be just of them but when it came time to line up they wanted us in it too and got their Denmark visitor to take the photo. With that we were on our way.
It was a good distance to go and so we set the GPS on the fastest route knowing it was a good distance whatever route we took.
We started out crossing the river and retracing our steps from Saturday on a minor road that climbs up from the river valley and follows a ridge with small farming villages every few kilometres slowing the progress.
As we neared the top of the hill from the river valley and on a hairpin turn we met a truck coming down. He slowed right down and I gave him a
toot as he was making room to let us past. He looked surprised as we went past and then I realised he actually pulled off the road for a rest and not necessarily to let us past. And there I was being a friendly motorist acknowledging courtesy on the road!
It wasn’t long before we entered the Autobahn system on to #60 and then the #66 to #3 heading around the south of the large city of Frankfurt and past its airport.
The flight path for the time we were passing was for planes to directly approach the autobahn from the east and with the regular succession of planes coming directly at us it was hard to concentrate on the highway. However, concentration was of high importance as the traffic volumes were heavy with just about as many trucks as there were cars.
An interesting feature as we past the airport itself was that the taxiway for one of the runways was constructed over the autobahn. There was just a 737 taxi-ing as we drove underneath but it still looked big enough slowly trundling along above us.
Just past the airport the KPMG building made a different
sight having being built in the shape of a ship with what looked like gangways down the side of the 7 or 8 story high building although they actually turned out to be stairways from the car parks.
The autobahn #3 took us all the way to Nurnberg and although there were times when Gretchen, who was driving by now, thought that she had passed the last truck on the road only to find as we rounded another sweeping bend that there were another line of them waiting to be passed at our regulation maximum speed of 120kph.
The ring road around the city took us seamlessly to our hotel on the southern side of the city.
It had seemed to have been a long time in the car today although in reality it wasn’t that long but just that the driving on the autobahn is the not the most pleasant experience making the drive seem longer.
With the weather still overcast we took a walk in a vast forest park across the road from the hotel to stretch the legs returning to the hotel for a microwave dinner we had bought at the local Lidl
store.
Tomorrow it’s the Romantic Road south for 2 days through Bavaria and it will be good to be away, we hope, from trucks.
