Kisbee raring to go as usual and to brave the wide and quite busy roads into Nurenburg centre. Only about 5km but our route crossed a couple of ring roads so not for the faint hearted. Bob had fitted Tomtom to his specially devised holder on Kisbee’s handlebars and set it to take us directly to the Kaiser Palace at the top of the old city. Got most of the way there until as we crossed a bridge over the river I pointed out a sign which said cyclists only, no cars or motorbikes. We parked where we were instead, near the Lorenze Sqaure and church. We discovered later we had chosen our parking spot well. The world and his motorbike and scooter was also parked there at 4pm. We visited the church and admired ... read more

A drive day today so not unhappy that the weather was a little cooler with a bit of rain. 200 mile trip so needed to use some motorways. We have discovered that signposting in Germany is often rather hit and miss. Motorway exits are not always numbered and sometimes don’t clearly say where they are going. This is not helpful and we had to take quite a lot of care when changing direction especially as at times we were going against Tomtom’s orders. Tomtom wanted to take the motorway all the way. I didn’t. I fall asleep when we drive on the motorway. We found a route which was mainly none motorway but had to use it for the last stretch down to Nurenburg as it would have been too complicated and taken too long otherwise. ... read more

Saturday, 15th April 2017 With the Bayern Ticket on hand, we hopped on to the "Munchen-Nurnberg Regio Express Train" which would bring us directly to the city of Nuremberg in 2 hours. One thing that strike us deeply as we exit from the train station building was its medieval feel of the old town. Directly opposite the station was the imposing Handwerkerhof, a shopping area focusing on crafts. We didn't stop to peep as we strolled along the main Konigstrase thoroughfare towards the river where the Christmas Market was. The busy street was lined with hotels, many cafes and shopping opportunities. The crowd was thick on a Saturday. We stopped by at one of the ice-cream stands for dessert before heading to the market for sausages. The landmark Pfarrhaus Lorenzkirche Church was a focal point within ... read more

Docked at 7.00am and off the boat by 9.00am. We had booked to go on the tour of the WWII historical info tour and Documentation Tour but opted to do the alternative at the last minute. Instead we did a tour of the Imperial Palace (which really isn't what I had in my mind when you talk about a Palace - no opulence here!). Had a fantastic guide, very informative with quite a lot of humour thrown in. The thing that strikes me is how willing the younger generation are to talk about the atrocities of war when others deny the holocoust ever happened. Our tour of the "Palace" ended in downtown Nuremberg. As we approached market square, our first vision was that of police cars blocking the entrance into the square where they hold the ... read more

Hi all, We did have a third day in Prague, but I figured that I had already posted enough pictures of Prague, so I will spare you. I can tell you that I was feeling better, so I was able to go explore too, which was nicer than just looking at pictures Steve had taken. We took the Hop-on-Hop-Off bus, which took us to all the sights, with narration, without me having to walk all around. So, that was nice. There are lots of little Christmas markets in different places around the city, so we visited two more. A little the same, a little different. We mostly drank hot mulled (spiced) wine and Christmas punch (non-alcoholic for me), and sampled a few different foods. It was fun. So, the next day was Sunday, and we hopped ... read more

Geo: 49.4505, 11.0805Two very full flights but pretty uneventful. With a 45-minute delay out of BWI, all it meant was a shorter layover in Newark. On the flight to Munich we had a nice dinner, movies, and Brennan got over three hours of sleep. G&G, not so lucky. Brennan slept through breakfast but we saved a couple of yogurts for him which he ate on the drive to Nuremberg. We got into Munich about 30 minutes early, before 7:00. We had not checked our bags so we were through immigration, customs and car rental really quickly and on our way by 8:00. The Budget rental agent asked if we wanted a GPS for 60 euro, and we opted for it. We would have found Nuremberg without it, but probably not the Jacobmarkt Hotel! As it turned out, ... read more

I have a whole new outlook on Nuremberg after this morning. Drew read up on what I thought was just going to be another museum about the Nazis and insisted that we make it a priority – the museum is known as the Nazi Documentation Center at the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. I was definitely interested, but had no ideas or expectations about the museum. After having spent the morning and part of the afternoon there, I still feel a bit dazed about the whole thing. Let me elaborate. I realize now that I really did not know much about Nuremberg before coming to the city other than it was a “cute German town” and that the Nuremberg Trials took place there. What I really had no prior knowledge about was that Nuremberg was really the ... read more

This morning was our last morning in Berlin before heading to Nuremberg and we made the not-so-great decision to drive there… more on that later. Before leaving for Nuremberg, we did manage to squeeze in more sight – the Berlin War Memorial. This was one thing that wasn’t available via tour bus yesterday, but I really wanted to do something Berlin Wall related. There are several different exhibits or sights throughout the city that talk about the Berlin Wall or have fragments of the wall, but the area with the largest amount of wall left was at the Berlin Wall Memorial and we opted for that. We got up early and took a cab to the location of the Memorial which covers a few city blocks and also includes an inside museum with more information about ... read more
