I am sitting on a bus right now with ten other people from all over the world. We are traveling to Schwetzingen, a neighboring town to Heidelberg, where the Freiburg Physical Virus Collective (tommy’s group) will be performing. And it occurred to me, as I sit here with all of these dancers, that there is not one single German on this bus. Let me tell you a bit about the people on this bus, in this company. There is Willy, who is French-Vietnamese, teacher and co-founder of ‘l’Art de Deplacement’ a specific art form that derived from freestyle streetwalking, or, Yamakasi. He is here in Freiburg preparing for the workshop he will be holding at the theater in Freiburg in January. He is here with his girlfriend, Ines, who is from Barcelona but speaks fluent French. ... read more

Geo: 49.7971, 8.40606This morning I caught the train to the university town of Heidelberg. Decided to spend the day here as it was well known as a tourist town and not far from Frankfurt. The old part of town was a 15 minute walk from the train station. I reached the start of the pedestrian only street that leads to the heart of the old town and to the castle. Along this street there were Christmas markets, very similar to the ones in Frankfurt, as well as chain clothing stores that I shop at in London. Off the side there were little squares with more market stalls. As I walked along, I could see Heidelberg Castle half way up the hill. I came to Kornmarkt and from here I caught a funicular to the castle. From ... read more

So, back again from H-berg. Just been chillin around town lately. Done a lot of schoolwork, since I finished my first grade placement last week. It was really hard to leave the kids. They sang some goodbye songs, and we had cupcakes and such. It was great, and I’ll miss them a lot! I’ve seen them in the halls, and they all get so excited to see Miss Walter again. I get a little excited to see them too! But yea, first-grade was wonderful, a lot of work but well worth it. I’ll miss Carol, she was such a great mentor and taught me a lot! But, preschool is going swimmingly. I was so comfortable in the classroom right from the beginning. Preschool is kind of my thing and I know what to do. It’s ... read more

Waving a sad goodbye to the Wiesn we headed to the station and caught ourselves a train to Heidelberg. We were met at the station by Michael and walked back to their flat where we caught up with Hanna - it was so great to see them again. Their flat is really cool. It's pretty spacious by European standards and has a nice garden and a friendly neighbouring cat called Kea who drops in for visits now and then. They have decorated the whole place with photos and souveneirs of their travels which looks really cool, and which made us really excited that we are heading back to Asia again soon. By day we explored town. We climbed up to the castle for great views through the fog and mist to the town and river below ... read more

Germany is excellent. We’ve been busy with school and exploring our new surroundings, and trying to figure out public transportation! After this weekend, I think we have a better grip on it, but I’m still not completely comfortable with my train/strass track knowledge! I’ve been busy at school, first graders sure wear you out! It’s a great class, 19 students and the kids are pretty good. I can already tell that it is going to be hard to leave them in another 7 weeks. I started off right away doing little things with Carol, and she is handing over more and more lessons every day. We had our open house last week so we got to meet all of the parents. This weekend AO and I were downtown (more about that later) but as we walked ... read more

Seth, Kalju, and I made a last minute decision to visit the Königstuhl when the clouds looked slightly less ominous than usual. We drove downtown to the Kornmarkt on the Hauptstrasse where we caught the Burgbahn. From this point in downtown Heidelberg, we board a railway car that takes about half way up the Königstuhl, or “King’s Throne,” the second highest hill in the Oldenwald Range at 568 meters or 1864 feet. Although, I’m not quite sure why it’s officially referred to as a hill, since everyone I know calls it a mountain, which seems more appropriate. But maybe it just seems that way to me because I’m from Florida. The second vehicle was much like the first, with staggered levels so that the trip up the mountain (hill) was made with one sitting level, as ... read more

Germany is past history but here are a few photos from our time there. Computer access is very poor and I don't know how much more I will be writing for the remainder of the trip. We can't seem to find the good Internet cafes and are using computer terminals in McDonald's! There is no way to upload photos so I am a bit frustrated. Stuttgart was the highlight of our time in Germany. The Stones concert was awesome as I have already stated. We did a day trip to Heidelberg, the home of my ancestors, and enjoyed the sights and the food of that quaint town. We also visited Nuremberg and Münich before traveling on to the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic was great with stops in Karlovy Vary (the spa town) and Prague. I ... read more

Day 20, 20th June. St Goar - Bingen - Mainz - Lörsch - Heidelberg Woke early feeling much better with appetite back. We were all on the road at eight. Toby was dazed and confused as usual, he keeps losing things; camera, sunglasses, mug… We had breakfast in a bakery and carried on down the Rhein. The mists lifted to reveal a blue sky, it was to be a hot day. Once at Bingen the scenery flattened out and we followed a rather confusing path along the river to Mainz for lunch. At Oppenhein we went on the roads through villages to the Rhein ferry across to Gernsheim, and then roads to the Bergstraße which would lead us to Heidelberg. We stocked up on food at Edeka* and reached Heidelberg as the last rays of the ... read more
