I really loved Germany! I will have to plan my own trip later and come back just to travel around Germany! We arrived in Heidelberg and walked around for a few minutes and then we hiked up to the hilltop schloss (this big, cool looking castle). It was neat. We only had about an hour, and then we walked back down to the city and crossed over the river to hike up philosophers trail. That was not that much fun. Shan got something to drink and I went into the gift shops and bought myself a book and a mug about Heidleberg. Then it was one night in a hotel, away from all food and everything and Shan and I ended up eating dinner with Will and Nick at a restaurant that oddly was trying ... read more

Sprechen sie Englisch? Today's lessons: 1. The autobahn is easy to get lost on. 2. I still need to know more basic German. First time life experience today: 1. Both Angie, AJ, and I got stuck in an elevator for the first time in our lives today. That's what Angie taught me today as we were driving on the autobohn toward Heidelberg. It's useful 'cause I don't know any flippin' German. She also taught me how to pronounce "police" in German (I don't even know how to spell it). She's taken some German classes as part of the training the army has to do here, so luckily she can help us out when we need it. I know "ausfahrt" and "einfahrt" are exit and entrance, "bitte" is please, and I found out I was butchering ... read more

Exploring HeidelbergThe Many Adventures of M&M The original plan for today was to take the train down to Stuttgart for the festival but after getting online and checking out train fare, we decided we'd try for next weekend instead (so we can book ahead and maybe save a little money...last-minute train fare is pricey!). So, not to waste a day sitting around, we took the Straßenbahn into Heidelberg instead. The Straßenbahn is the local train...it's a lot like a subway works and just as affordable but above ground so we get to see Germany as we're traveling through it. Before getting on the train we stopped at a bakery (because we missed the free breakfast at the hotel) and Matt got a huge soft pretzel and I got something wonderful that I can't remember what it's ... read more

Hallo! Today we made a trip to Heidelberg with a vivid group of exchange students! IDEA (a group taking care of exchange students in Darmastadt) was our excursion host and our guide of the day, Markus, showed us around Heidelberg, the old university city. It takes about an hours by train from Darmstadt to Heidelberg. We walked around the town for a couple of hours and had a nice picnic in the afternoon on the northern side of the city, on the river banks. Heidelberg is a charming city!! The town is located by the river Neckar and the valley area is just simply beautiful. The majestetic red sandstone Heidelberg castle is situated 100m above the city and there is a gorgeous view over the city. In the middle of the city there is a Gothic, ... read more

Well, first off, my birthday was last week. It was really nice, I went out with my friends on Saturday night to celebrate. We had lots of fun. Then at midnight on my birthday, my senora and Kate, my roomate, surprised me with a cake and candles! It was really sweet and unexpected. On my birthday, my parents came to visit. I met them after lunch and showed them around the old section of Valencia. They were exhausted, but I thought it was fun! Then I had classes and we went out to dinner after them down by the beach. On Wednesday they came over to my apartment for dinner. My senora had invited them to come and it was really fun. I had to do a lot of translating, it got confusing at times, but ... read more

Ode to Heidelberg Europe » Germany » Heidelberg By Rachel Conquers EuropeApril 13th 2007Rachel I listened to the city come alive from its dreamless slumber Blinking awake at the movement overhead The patient tick of a crossing signal, Cars purring at stop lights and the awkward clunk of a trash can emptied. Surround-sound birds, A spray of air at the gas station low hum of public transport comes together to form a cacophony of living and mechanical sounds swirling together as the city comes alive. The scent of a skunk in the woods, a cemetery of dew-laden grass, and yeasty bread rising in the bakery. Lingering and la... read more

Guten tag aus Deutchland! I am taking German lessons from F + U University (I still dont know what that stands for) in Heidelburg, Germany for the next two weeks. Learning a new language is like cracking open an antique book: I can actually feel the dust sloughing off inside my brain. Why are you taking German? Gut fragen. 1. I hate being a mongolot. Americans are ubiquitously known for being monolingual. Communication is crutial. While visiting a country, you should certainly TRY to communicate with the locals. They appreciate the effort and its good for you. 2. I will be in Germany for almost a month, and wanted something to tie me to a place. After wandering the continent for six months, I needed a place to unpack my bags. Granted, its not a ... read more

He has lived 4.5 times longer than I. I cant even begin to imagine the things one can see in a lifetime that stretches from the turn of the century: through the invention of vehicles and two world wars. I was notified by my relatives Ken and Nancy that we had family in Germany. How perfect! I decided to end my European adventure in the place of my origin. This is a journey of self-discovery and it certainly helps by knowing where you come from. Upon entering the country, I learned BAUMANN means "builder man". I was intent to discover more about my heritage and decided to contact these distant relations in Germany. My relatives are named The Kramers, and they are my grandfather's sister's husband's cousin. Pretty far-removed, but when we met, I was ... read more

Heidelberg, my Heidelberg. Many great poets have penned many fine words about this romantic city. Heidelberg has been our home these past two years, but I have done very few blogs for it. This, however, is not an all-encompassing blog and is mostly a focus on the photographs which I took on one trip downtown. When I awoke this morning, I saw snow outside the window and instantly decided it was time for me to get blogging. You see, we don’t see snow too often in our valley, and this winter was especially warm. It snowed around Thanksgiving and then the snow disappeared until now, the end of March. Anyway, my first stop today was the Heidelberg Castle. The castle is extremely eclectic, which can be mostly attributed to the span of its construction, lasting from ... read more

Heidelberg was our next stop. We didn't do too much sight seeing but we walked down the hopstrase which is the main street. There was a huge castle on the mountain about the main street that was amazing. We didn't make it up to it but we are hoping to get back another time. We also went to see the old bridge which goes over some river, can't remember the name!! ... read more
