Phill, Katy, and I walked up the mountain in Heidelberg on Monday, Whit Monday since we had off. It was a long and tiring hike that took around 45 minutes, but it was definitely worth it. It was very cool. We had some lunch up there and enjoyed ourselves. It was interesting to see where the Nazis did things and just how far from the city it is set. From the mountain you can see Heidelberg very coolly, like a plane picture.... read more

It's Saturday, May 6, and I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Ulm, Germany. My friend Jim is at another swap meet (mostly old cars and antiques) while I'm on my own for a few hours in this city between Stuttgart and Munich (Southern Germany). It's good to be getting another update in. It's way overdue. What have I been up to since my last update? Let me tell you. Well, let me try to tell you (at least to the extent that my memory doesn't fail me and time permits). In my last update, I was in Hannover, Germany (Northern German city). Jim and I left Hannover on Monday evening (May 1), and drove to Wiedenbruck, a small quaint town to the southwest of Hannover. The town center had the typical curving narrow cobblestone streets ... read more

Yesterday was the SonntagsZug, which is traditional event in Germany. The kids get this stick that has ribbons on it and a hard-boiled egg on the top with a summer pretzel. The summer pretyel is sweeter than normal and I tried one and it was really good. They also have a ceremony where winter is burned to signfy the end of winter and then the beginning of summer/spring. It was a pretty cool ceremony thingie. There was a woman as the summer warrior and a man as the winter one, who loses in the end. At the end of the ceremony all the kids sing this song and then they get a summer pretzel. It takes place at different times all over the country and yesterday was Heidelberg's day.... read more

We took a trip to Frankfurt with AJY on Thursday last week. It was pretty cool, but again super super cold which made it a little less fun. We went to Goethe's House, a big german writer (sometimes compared to shakespeare). It was a pretty cool place, but the tour took a really long time and it went into our lunch break so we were all pretty hungry. After lunch we went to the Kaiser Museum where Herr Dörr (one of the teachers at ajy) talked about the kaisers and history stuff. Then we went to Paulskirche. It was a beautiful catholic church. Some people took pictures, but I felt wierd taking pictures in a catholic church so i didnt. After the church we had like 35 minutes free time. We (Phill, Kelly, Katy, Katie, and ... read more

On Friday the tenth europahaus iii, where kelly lives, had a kneipe tour for the house. kelly invited me so i went with her. at first it was a little intimdating because everyone was in groups and there was very fast german being spoken, but after the first bar everything was good. kelly and i started talking with the german students and stuff. we had a ton of fun. we went to three bars in heidelberg and kelly and i could definitely not keep up with their drinking. after the bars we went to döner, which has basically gyros. its the only thing open at 2 am (like mighty taco in wny). we ate some döner and then headed home. so much fun. were going to do stuff with max, ole, and nina (no picture) again. ... read more

26th December - Boxing Day! We left Paris today by train and headed to Bruchsal in Germany to meet up with Stephanie (a beautiful girl who I worked with at Perth Zoo), however due to technology and a mis-punch in the telephone number we hadn't quite made contact with each other when we arrrived so a night in one of the only two hotels in this little snow capped village was the go!.. although i think because we were non-German and late arrivals we got special hiked up prices along with an early check out and no breakfast.. oh well, it was good to be spoilt for one night. 27th December Snow had fallen over night and it was beautiful and everywhere! Everything just looked so clean and the while it was covering the village Christmas ... read more
