A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to visit the cities of Heidelberg and Mannheim Germany. Although very much a tourist town, Heidelberg is still worth a visit. Founded in the mid 1200s, there were people living in the area even as far back as 766 A.D. Heidelberg is located on the Burgenstrasse (Castle Road), a 1000 Km (621 mile) road that stretches from nearby Mannheim to Prague, Czech Republic. Heidelberg boasts the first university in Germany founded in 1386. In fact, even today approximately 1 in 5 of the population is a student. The Heidelberg (schloss) castle was built over 800 years ago and during that time has been sacked and burned three times. The picturesque ruins, laid out majestically along the Neckar river valley, is one of Heidelberg’s most popular attraction nestled just ... read more

The plane comes to a halt on the tarmac at Charles De Gaulle Airport. Passengers spring from their seats and begin frantically rummaging in the overhead lockers for their hand luggage - experience should tell us this infectious haste is a fruitless exercise. And yet on every flight the world over fidgety passengers stand around anxiously in claustrophobic aisles in their own self-inflicted eternities before shuffling painfully to the exits. In contrast, the anxious shufflers are replaced by a dozen or so Afro-Carribean men who clamber abroad and go to work, busying themselves between the aisles; nonchalantly and methodically cleaning, vacuuming and filling refuse sacks as they go, all orchestrated by their Turkish whip hands… Who said there was no caste system in Europe? It’s 10pm before we’re in the air again, heading back east and ... read more

Heading north we enter Germany en route to Heidelberg for an orientation tour. Then onto the picturesque town of St Goar in the Rhine Valley before reachong our hostel. Still raining this morning, the waterfall and river were really flowing. We left at 8 and crossed the border back into Germany. Had our lunch stop at Heidelberg, a university town, where the first university was built in 1386. Went up to the castle and saw the world's largest wine vat, which holds 221 726 litres of wine, and also went to the pharmacy museum. This is where Robrert Bunsen went to uni. Arrived in St Goar and went straight to the beer stein place, and saw the world's largest free hanging cuckoo clock. Had dinner at a restaurant, then went to our wine tasting down ... read more

One thing the Germans do well is car making. BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes…and of course, Smart! The Smart ForTwo is what I’ve rented for my last 6 days in Heidelberg before my 2 week visit home to Ottawa. First I drove it from the Frankfurt airport to Heidelberg reaching speeds up to 130km/h on the autobahn (it’s maximum speed is 140km/h). The next day I drove the smaller highway along the Neckar River southwest to Heilbronn. Along the way are many vineyards, castles and fairy-tale-looking towns. After 7-8 hours of driving it was time to fill my tank. Cost: 16 Euros (approx $26CDN) ... read more

Hello Friends I’m finally posting a few pictures taken while sight seeing in Heidelberg. I’ve toured the Castle twice now and I’m certain I’ll give it a third visit before I leave. Most of the castle was built between 1400 and 1620. It is a ruin now. Some of it was destroyed in wars with France as the Germans and French battled over the city as well as by lightening. Inside you’ll find the Great Tun which, apparently, is the biggest wooden barrel in the world to ever be filled with wine. There are other buildings on the castle grounds which I have yet to visit, which is why I’ll need the third visit. ;-) Another popular attraction is the old bridge with spans the Neckar River. It has been destroyed at least 8 times by ... read more

Transportation in Germany tends to be expensive and it seems as though everyone in Heidelberg has a bicycle. So why shouldn’t I? That’s right…I bought a new-to-me Peugeot. This French-made bike is a sweet ride. It’s got 5 speeds, a bell, a kickstand, lights, a basket and you peddle backwards to stop. The back-peddling is taking some getting used to. Hopefully I won’t have too many collisions while I get used to that. The bike has proven to be convenient transportation for getting around town and running errands. But today, it is my means of transport for my excursion along the Neckar River. I traveled approximately 20km round trip east to a town called Neckargemünd. The path on the way to Neckargemünd (south side of the river) was a bit rougher than the path back to ... read more
