oh, hey, about tomorrow: we are taking the Nice Small Group Food Tour. Professional guide, 20 food tastings, one olive oil ditto also one for wine. I'll go out and get a notebook so I can let you know, in detail, how it went. I'll be happy if they just tell me the English names of all the fish we have seen listed on menus. Some go by three or four different names. Then you can throw in the local dialect, and I get lost. Speaking of that, time to go out for dinner. A bien tot!... read more

Making our way to Nice, the countryside is dotted with wind turbines. We have the Med on our right looking nice and inviting. Temperature outside at 11.30am is 32cel. Stopping on Arles (Arla) former Roman City wandering around town munching lunch. The French Riviera has 43km of beaches. Nice is a really lovely city, right on the beach of the Med. People swimming at 8.30am - 25cel already. Population 350,000. Nice is where all the rich and famous fly into in their private jets and helicopter over to Monaco. Monaco is only 25km from Nice. The road over to Monaco is magnifque, wide motorway type roads riddled with tunnels. Monaco and Monte Carlo by night was amazing. Fast cars, Casinos, Glitz and glam of the rich and famous. Didn't see anyone we knew. We parked the ... read more

The news bulletin crashed onto my TV screen about another terrible attack in France. It didn't give a city, just that it was on the Southern coast. I watched as people ran screaming through streets and the horrible blair of emergency vehicles echoed in the air. I watched and drew in my breath as I began to recognize patterns of a city I had just visited in April. Yes, I knew that hotel. I recognized the archways that fronted buildings on a main street. I knew then that it was Nice. My heart filled with compassion and love for the sweetness of the people I had met in Nice. There was the young waitress who assured me that I would like an untranslateable entree. There was the market vendor who laughed so hard when I took ... read more

Nasza francuska przygoda powoli się kończy, a tu zaległości w blogowaniu... Nadrabiamy jednym zbiorczym postem o Lazurowym Wybrzeżu.

Quieter day today. Caught up on some sleep then had a face call with the family. Great to speak with Charlie and Pippa just before they went to bed. Charlie had problems working out why we had blue skies and sunshine when it was dark and cold in Melbourne. Left that one with his parents....... Out for a walk and through the backstreets passed a cafe where 2 people had a really nice looking Charcuterie plate. Back pedalled and had one of those with a cheese platter to follow as our lunch (with a cheeky little Rose). Great way to start the day. Found a restaurant that was recommended for dinner so booked a table for tonight (had been told it was hard to get a booking). No problems, in for the second sitting at 2100. ... read more

This is the long haul flight. 12 hrs 20 mins. They decide to serve a full meal at midnight. Gotta go with that. Chris has worked the flat bed out again and is in no food mood so silence there. I go for the goods with bubbles to match the next leg of the trip. Finally decide that food isn't a good idea and pass on the dessert. Flat bed awaits. Now we compare. Hmm, bed hard, not as roomy and blah blah. Getting picky now. no matter, sleep comes easily after a long day. After 4 hours of bliss, up for a stretch and whatever stop. Back to bed and asleep in no time. Eventually wake up after about 8 hours sleep. Hmm, complaints aside, can't be that bad. Woken up for breakfast then we ... read more

Oh, yes it is and it gets harder each year. Still, with each journey I shoulder this burden with joy and a few more aches and pains. To add to my travails, this year Delta inexplicably changed my outgoing flight from Newark to Amsterdam by 1 1/2 hours later than previously scheduled. This necessitated a change in my connecting flight from Amsterdam to Nice. Instead of arriving at 11:30 a.m. I pulled into my hotel at 5:40p.m. just in time for the first meeting with my group. This is my 10+ trip with Grand Circle/ Overseas Adventure Travel and my first to France. It is a small ship river cruise up the Rhone ending with 5 days in Paris. There are 38 very pleasant travelers and a wonderful tour director named Olivier. He is efficient, caring, ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Nice February 17th 2016

Wednesday February 17, 2016 – Today was a good but busy day, as so many are these days. I left around 9am and headed out for the Russian Orthodox Church, with a stop at the tourist info office along the way. I got there at 9:40am but it didn’t open until 10am. I took a couple pictures and waited it out and then went into the church to look around. It reminded me a lot of all the churches I saw last summer, except this time I did not need to cover my hair. From there I walked to the Chagall museum. Two of the rooms were closed as they were setting up a new exhibit, so it was a little cheaper. It came with a audio guide, which was quite nice. Turns out I like ... read more

Issy decides to skip breakfast so I eat on my own. She does however ask me to bring her back some bread. I wait until there are no waiters around and wrap some rolls in paper serviettes and sneak them into my pockets. I feel like I've just robbed a bank. I wait for the local constabulary to descend and cart me off to jail. I'm not quite sure why I feel so guilty; we've paid for breakfast. The hotel probably doesn't mind where we eat it, in fact they'd probably prefer it if we ate it in our room off a serviette so they'd have fewer dishes to wash. We're told that there will be a half hour wait for a taxi to the station. I wanted to get to the station early, because although ... read more
