Nice and the train to Milan I booked a taxi through Mama Shelter for 8.30am, figuring that would give me plenty of time to get to the station, find the platform, etc for the train to Nice. I had a lovely breakfast at the (even in the morning) super funky Mama Shelter restaurant which was included in the tariff, then went back to my room, got my bags and returned to reception at 8.25. My taxi was already there! I got to the station, worked out where my train was leaving from and went and got a cup of coffee and sat down. After a little while, I heard piano and figured that it was playing over the PA. No, there was actually a piano in the terminal and a man was playing it. I am ... read more

Nice (pronounced niece) was an excellent place to stop for a few days. It has an excellent marina with great people working there that are very helpful, an excellent tourist information center, a wonderful public transportation system which includes buses, trams and a train station that you can use to go to other places; a historic part of town to wander through, numerous museums, great promenades along the water, fabulous scenery with Nice being surrounded on one side by mountains and the other the sea – what else could you want? Oh, yes, I forgot wonderful places to sit and have a meal. This was going to be our last stop in France as our plans are to head to Italy next. We at first thought we would only stay a couple of nights, but with ... read more

I arrived in Nice that evening and checked into my hostel. The man on the reception desk was typically French, in the sense that he was about as friendly as a snake. I know this doesn’t apply to all French people, but a large majority of them seem to live up to their stereotype of being bloody grumpy! I went into my dorm room, and met Sonia from Montreal, Canada…. now she speaks French and was very nice! I also met Mocca & Ryan, two girls from China who were travelling around Europe together. I went out that evening to have a wander around Nice before it got too dark, went to the promenade, and strangely enough, it reminded me a little of Las Vegas. A little, not a lot! The promenade has large hotels on ... read more

This entry by Tom. Slept in but not a lot. Even though I covered a lot of distance yesterday and it was the 14th day of the last 15 that I was on the bike, I was still in the habit of waking up early. Still, we missed the breakfast service at the hotel which I heard was very good. So we headed out on a neighbourhood walkabout to find food. We picked up some flat peaches at a corner grocer but ended up at the big supermarket down on the main road for the real stuff. Found some very good sausage and cheese for cheap, plus juice, waffles and fruit salad which we brought back to the hotel. After what amounted to brunch we got down to the business of packing the bikes. It took ... read more

This entry by Tom. The last day on our bikes looked like pretty much all the others--it was going to be another warm day. But this time I think it was mostly because we were so far south. There was a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast for Nice, plus the van had to be returned this afternoon, so the plan was for Donna and Luce to drive directly from Draguignan to the hotel in Nice, unload everything including the bike bags, then generally be available for pick-ups if we hit nasty weather. Everyone left early and rode the shorter direct route. Caroline also went in the van the whole way to help out at the finish and then the plan was for her to ride back along the route and meet me, probably in Cannes. ... read more

To start this blog, I'll post the promised picture of the beach view this morning from my balcony (see photo). By the way, this stretch of wa is called the Baie des Anges (the Bay of Angels). It's hard to tell from here, but up close you can see that the beach is mostly stones rather than sand (see photo). This morning I explored Nice. Rick Steves has two Nice walks and I followed both of them. The first had me stroll along the waterfront promenade with the hotels on one side and the beach on the other (see photo). I passed by a collection of flower bouquets which I assume is in tribute to the victims of the Nice terror attack in July where an ISIS adherent drove a truck into a holiday crowd, killing ... read more

Here I am on the French Riviera - or as the French call it, the Côte d'Azur - and enjoying a gorgeous view from my hotel room (see photo). I'll take another picture tomorrow when the sun is behind me so you can see the beach better. Right now it is evening and the light is not right for a good shot. OTOH, the sunset should be spectacular from this vantage point. I am in Nice and, as everyone says who has ever been here, "Nice is nice." I plan to explore the city tomorrow because I only arrived late this afternoon. Today I spent a lot of time in the car and one of the places I stopped was Antibes which is full of wealthy individuals and their homes and yachts. Here is a photo ... read more

We flew from Newcastle Airport in the UK to Nice with Easy Jet. Tickets were a bargain at £50 return. The Cote D'Azure is the playground for the rich and famous. Would we fit in to the jet set life style? Nice was our base for the first 6 days of our stay followed by Antibes for 3 days. Our hotel The Novotel was set a little outside the Old Nice Town but was only a short walk or tram ride from the promenade. We immediately fell in love with the surroundings - azure sea, sunny skies, and lovely Provencal countryside inland. We explored Nice on foot. The old quarter was particularly fascinating with colourful buildings, narrow streets, small shops and restaurants. The Promenade d'Anglais provided some sad memories of the recent terrorist atrocities and of ... read more

Probably just as well! Turns out that mosquito season has started in Nice and two of the little devils chewed the heck out of us last night! The welts they left behind are remarkable. Bleah. Thoughts for the trip: I have received numerous compliments on my French again on this trip. Now, I know perfectly well that my French has more holes in it than Swiss cheese (little pan-European word play there in case you missed it). And while it is nice to get the compliments, I didn't understand why I am getting them. NOW I know! It's not that I am any good at it - if my French were that great, I would sound like I was supposed to, to French ears. It's how BAD I am at it - which clearly marks me ... read more
