Hello my fellow travellers! Our first day in France has come to it's end and it has been an overall nice day but with a heavy undertone which I'll come to later. The day has been quite calm yet we've somehow managed to walk a pretty decent 23 kilometres and actually beat our previous record for this trip. We started by going out for a quick stop on our own to pick up a cap for Andreas, I was kind of surprised that he chose a urban cap designed for the low teens. but it's his choice and not mine. In fairness though the Ferrari cap I got from Elisabeth on Cape Verde isn't the sexiest either! Afterwards we went back to the apartment and then headed out together with François who gave us a good ... read more

Early on Monday the 15th, we walked the few blocks to the Desiree Clary Metro station to ride the 3 stops to the train station to catch the train to Nice. It was a comfortable 2 1/2 hour ride from Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles to Gare de Nice-Ville. Hotel La Villa Nice Victor Hugo was about a 10 minute walk from the train station in a nice part of town, only a couple of blocks from all the restaurant and shops and 5 blocks from the sea. As we arrived at 11:00AM, only one room was ready. We dumped off our bags and headed out for lunch at "Le Gustave 5" restaurant on the Promenade Des Anglais along the Mediterranean coastline. The water is a startling blue colour; more like a swimming pool than the sea. The ... read more

Today it was time to leave Italy behind and start the next leg of our holiday in France. After our last breakfast on the beautiful terrace at LaFavia 4rooms we re-packed our bags and hauled them to the station. It has been so much easier using the trains for the last three days without our bags in tow!! Our train to Nice from Milano Centrale was not until 11.10 am so at least we weren't getting in the way of peak hour commuters. As usual we allowed heaps of time so we were at Milano Centrale just after 10.00am and had to wait for our platform number to come up on the board. The platform number was finally put up, but only about 15 minutes before our departure time. We headed off to Platform 19 and ... read more

My husband got to see Nice today. Not the one we have been walking around in the rain exploring but the one that comes alive with a brilliant blue sky. All the places we have already seen came to life under the gleaming sun. We enjoyed a fresh croissant, coffee, and juice in our hotel while chatting with a lovely man from Copenhagen. Not long after we headed out the door to make our way to the Vauban bus stop in order to catch our bus to the hilltop town of Eze. The bus stop was about a 25 minute walk through the streets of Nice where we wound our way past people enjoying their morning coffee or espresso. We arrived at the bus stop and located our #82 bus. We paid the driver 3 euros ... read more

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families of those who so tragically lost their lives in the devastating plane crash from Barcelona to Dusseldorf. It was so heartbreaking to read about and one can only imagine the pain left in the wake of this terrible accident. It is also difficult for us, having just been in Barcelona where we encountered dozens of school groups, and wondering if perhaps it was one of them. Life cut short too soon for so many. Hold those you love a bit tighter tonight. We arrived in Nice by train from Avignon. We met a very nice man from Virginia while waiting for the train and we chatted with him for some time. He was travelling on his own at the ripe age of 72, which I found ... read more

Very early start to my day today to catch a flight from Geneva, but worth the getting up early to arrive and get settled in by lunchtime at my hotel. I decided to take a walk to the main promenade, but in doing so just had to have a crepe of course, French style. From having my lunchtime snack, I walked along the promenade, but then onto the pebbled beach. The waves were rolling in, the sound was beautiful. There is no building sand castles here, but can build pebble castles. There were men fishing, fish jumping out of the water, and boats nearby trying to catch the fish also. I then decided to catch a little road train, around Nice and old town Nice and up to le Chateau. As we went up the hillside ... read more

While the idea of needing a vacation from travelling may seem all together insane, let me explain. Since my last post (an eternity ago) I have seen a vast majority of the Atlantic coast of France and have crossed country to continue the adventure along the Mediterranean. I've spent nights in Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Montpellier, Coustellet, Marseille, Moustiers-Saint-Marie, Cannes and now Nice- with a brief detour via Biarritz. Moving from one place to the next, I have come to realize that travel is hard work. Perhaps not in the traditional 9 to 5 sense of the word but certainly work none-the-less. Being in perpetual motion is exhausting and I admire those who are required to travel in excess for work. All of this is getting me to my final point: it's time for a ... read more
