Moustiers turned out to be a pretty village clinging to the side of a tall limestone cliff. A rushing stream runs right through the middle of the village, dividing it into two parts that are joined by two or three bridges. Above there are two tokens of religious fervour: a chapel perched on a rock perhaps 100 m above the village, and a gold metal star hung from a chain that spans the gap the stream has carved in the cliffside! I climbed up to the chapel, just because I wasn't already tired enough after 66 km of riding. The next day we embarked on the challenge of the Gorges du Verdon. The ride actually started with a long descent from Moustiers to the point where the river emerges from the gorge, to feed a hydro ... read more

It is our last day in Nice. We pack and we decide to head to Parc Phoenix. We have passed the Parc several times and decide it would be a nice easy thing to do on our last day. It is a Parc with different gardens located in a large hot house. There are also outdoor gardens with many different kinds of plants that I have never seen before. They also have various fish and some animals like miniature horses, goats,, lemurs, ovistitis (monkeys from Brazil), otters, wallabies, pigs, peacocks, alligators and unusual chickens. They have an outdoor cafe and picnic tables. It is quiet no schools groups today. Included in admission to the Parc is entrance to Asian Art Museum which is located inside Parc Phoenix. We go ahead and visit the museum since it ... read more

Goodbye Nice

We arrived in Nice by train from Paris. We took a taxi to our Airbnb. Our landlord was waiting for us. Our apartment is on the ninth floor of a building overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The unit has one bedroom, a toilet with sink room and a room with a shower and sink. The living room and kitchen face the sea and we have a balcony with a table and chairs. The first order of business is to shop at the grocery store right next to our building. We buy cereal, milk, fruit, bread, cheeses and wine. There is a boulangerie (bakery) just a few doors down where I buy chocolate and raisin croissants for breakfast. There is a long promenade all around the bay and we walk the entire length. There are two lanes just ... read more

Time to leave our lovely Nice. The holiday within the holiday. The tram system has made a huge difference to the city...very efficient with one arriving every three minutes. Jean Medecin with it's beautiful shops with beautiful prices (way too much for us)! Fantastic beaches, charm of the oldtown history, flowers, fruit & veg markets, easy access & frequency to the outer regions by bus or train.....Antibes, Cannes, Biot, Cagnes sur Mer, Grasse, St Paul du Vence, Vence, Entrevaux, Villefranche, Saint Jean cap Ferrat, Beaulieu, Monaco, and Menton on the Ventimigllia border to Italy. Tram to the airport...still no hold luggage so straight to Departure Security with our online boarding passes. Moving the whole time between EU countries, so no checks on arrival, just as you depart. Cuts at least 2 hours off the trip & ... read more

Rain & thunder...we've been so lucky with the weather! Ventured out in what we thought was in between & got caught in a huge downpour! Paying special attention now to what the locals are wearing. Afternoon eased off enough for a walk into Ville Veux (oldtown) & Jean Medecin. ... read more

On Friday, October 11, we departed our lovely apartment in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue heading for Nice. We first had to stop at McDonalds to get WiFi since we had been incommunicado overnight and knew our family would be wondering if we were still alive. LOL!! It was a beautiful sunny, warm day and our trip was approximately 250 Km. Again most of the journey was on the motorway and our toll for this trip was 22.10E. We exited the motorway onto the Promenade de Anglais which took us past the modern airport, along the Mediterranean and into the city. The address of our apartment was 10 Rue Centrale in Vieux Nice and we were hoping to drop our belongings at the apartment before returning the car at around 5 PM. We contacted the landlady who was to meet ... read more

We spent a week in Nice, France as a family. Another cheap/short flight from Geneva. We then caught the tram into Nice town and found our apartment in the old town of Nice. It was crowded which we were expecting and still experiencing the heat wave, but luckily it wasn't as hot as other parts of Europe. We walked up Castle Hill near our house, we wanted to catch the elevator but we thought it opened at 10am not 9am. Murray and the girls went later in the week to go on the ancient lift. It was beautiful up the top, with sweeping views of Nice old town and the beach. There is a beautiful waterfall at the top, which we figured out we could actually see from near our apartment. We enjoyed swimming at the ... read more

They celebrate nationwide here 'Armistice Day' with parades, flag waving, wreath laying and prayer at the memorials. Nice's Memorial sits under Du Chateau hill on the Port Lympia. It can be seen if you are driving into Nice on the high Corniche road and from sea if you are approaching the harbour. In Paris, an unknown soldier was placed in the chapel of the Arc de Triomphe then later buried under the Arc and an eternal flame has burned on the tomb under the Arc since 1920. We stayed away from the gatherings as per advice of 'safetravel.govt.nz'. It is significant that Grandad Stanley served in Ypres (near Belgium) and returned home to start a family. The 'Allblacks' playing France tonight in Paris - wearing the poppy. We can clearly see there is a huge spread ... read more

Bonjour, il pleut aujourd'hui! Raincoats on and we had to get outside for a walk. A 'little' incident (smoke alarm) with a 'big' response further up the main street. I don't blame them one bit (when they are having to deal with apartments) for blocking off 3 blocks. All sorted by the time we got back. A walk up to Place St Maurice noting the now vacant Le Ray block will be reinstated with a training football field and a park for residents to enjoy. All the surrounding residents will be pleased they will now get a great view over the park and not into the back of some stadium. A little drizzle and a cool breeze coming off the Alpes. Snow on some of the Alpes which we will get to see when we fly ... read more

We didn't step outside the door once today - even though it rained and thundered in the night and then didn't rain again until the afternoon. The annual Nice to Cannes marathon along the water front was at 8am and we decided to stay away. They were lucky with the weather. The thunder is back! St Maurice, the district we are in, housed the Le Ray Stadium until this week as we have watched it being demolished. There is a new OCG Stadium up the Var valley they can continue to host International football games. I remember Le Ray also housed clay tennis courts. Nice is part of the Grand Prix Circuit a build up to the French Open tournament. We have been entertained by the ClayTennis courts we can see from our lounge window. They ... read more
