We took an elevator to the ancient high fort on the hill above Nice and then walked down. We knew we'd be wasted if we tried to hike up AND walk down too. Plus, I swam twice. Love the clear, warm, salty water! The only drawback is that the beach is all pebbles with only a small area where sand has been imported for the kids to have a play area. Believe me it is a torturous trek getting into and out of the water. A kind lady, nude bathing on the beach, took pity on me and came down to the water's edge to give me a hand, bare boobs and all! So, I'm back to appreciating all the wonderful people, clothed (or not) who happen into my life. The jet lag caught up with ... read more

Traveling as sisters is a joy! I feel as if people around us sense how much we are enjoying ourselves. A recent book we both read talked about the really important thing in life is our connection to others, so that's a lot what this trip is about, the two of us enjoying ourselves with France and Italy as the back ground. Another biggie for this trip is satisfying our curiosity about the different ways people live.... read more

Now I know how it feels to be in a place where you can't say even the simplest things, like "where's the bathroom," and if you could, you wouldn't understand their answer if they weren't pointing. I feel really stupid! Thank goodness Anita has mastered a few phrases, and most of the stores and restaurants speak and understand English. Very humbling. Nice is beautiful and looks a lot like Italy to me. Our hotel is right in the center and only a few blocks from the beach where I plan to go swim shortly.... read more

Day 112 – French Riviera – France By the afternoon today we had reached the French Riviera. It looks so good. Crystal water, blue skies and no hint of rain. Hooray! We stopped at a perfumery in Grasse which is where perfume apparently originates from. We got to see how they make perfume and then we got into the sampling. Our bus smelt real nice when everyone got back on. Once we’d settled into our hotel in Nice we got dressed for a group dinner. The restaurant we went to had other TopDeck groups there so we ran into our last TopDeck bus driver and also some sisters from the Britain/Ireland trip. The dinner was good fun and we all followed our illustrious leader to Wayne’s Bar. How to describe this bar??? Well it’s ... read more

Buongiorno a tutti! These are my last couple of days working here in Pietra Ligure! Working here at the camping was a nice experience itself, I learned new things and improved my Italian. But working a second time here, I don’t think so. I don't like to say "never", but it wouldn't be an option I'd easily choose again. It’s a family-run camping and it has its annoyances sometimes because there are many things that could be improved here, but it seems those who should care do not care at all so I don't care either, since I’m leaving anyway. I must say that my boss, Daniele, is a very friendly guy and likes to make jokes all the time. I have absolutely nothing to complain about the way I was treated here! Patrizia was also ... read more

Managed to get Trev medicated up so that he felt somewhat human and able to fly. Head, sinus and down to his chest so he is hacking, snorting and blowing! Ended up at the airport with lots of time and once we were all loaded on the plane it was announced that we couldn't depart for 1 hour!! :) Captain assured us he was working on getting the departure sooner. Apparently there was thunderstorms in the Nice area and something about the Brussels tower....not sure why Belgium had any say about when our flight from Barcelona would take off!! Odd. Good news though we were only delayed 25 minutes. First delay on our trips far so can't complain. Arrived in Nice to overcast skies and warm temperatures. Took a bit to find the bus depot but ... read more

The day did not start well, as our hotel proprietor - who had cheerily encouraged pre-paying for both rooms and breakfast yesterday afternoon - proved both grouchy and stingy in providing anything approaching sustenance for today's relatively brief journey; he positively bristled when we deigned to ask for refills on orange juice (this was the first non-buffet breakfast we encountered), and rebuked an inquiry about the availability of cheese by retorting 'there is no cheese - this is a Frenchbreakfast!' Definitely not worth the 7 euros he had extorted. But this was our final riding day and we were not to be swayed from enjoying ourselves. There were several options for getting to Ni... read more

Well I am wrapping up my south of france trip. I spent the last of it lazing on beaches and soaking up as much sun as possible. The first day I went to Ville-franche , a town a out 10 minutes away by train. The beach is right off the train station, so very easy to get to.The actual beach is smaller pebbles as opposed to big rocks that are on Nice's beach. Tha surrounding area is beautiful with these vibrant purple/pink flowers that climb up the surrounding stone walls. The water was fresh and turquoise. It was a great quick day trip. My last day, Sunday, Ironman Nice was happening. This day was going to be another lazy beach day, but the draw of being able to see an event like this was too good ... read more
