Something that France does well is make cakes and pastries, for brekkie we had a feed of croissants before having a walk around Marseille’s port. Seeing as the rugby world cup was on, there were wooden statues all over the place with a rugby theme. One featured the all black’s haka so we did the tourist thing and got a photo with them. I apologise to any locals that we terrified. We found an information centre and decided our best option was to bus out to the beach at Cassis. It was a cracking day so we wasted no time in hitting the beach and going for a swim. We had a stroll around the town; bought an ice cream and when we got back the beach was deserted as the wind had picked up big ... read more

After my cricket match I trained back to Wigan and had a big night on the hooligan juice with Jaimee, Todd and his cricket team. There were some characters, one who was 18 that is fired from a new job every week, does superb Forrest Gump impressions and was chatting up 50 year olds on the dance floor. The night got even better when Todd found £50 on the sidewalk and shouted drinks. I think Jaimee probably should have passed on the free drinks because she was, shall we say very merry, nah that doesn't do her justice, she was pissed. Therefore when we woke her early the next morning she was feeling less than awesome and was in a panicked state to get her bags packed for our trip. Oh yeah I forgot to mention ... read more

A note to our friends and readers We hope that you are all enjoying this blog as much as we are enjoying our trip. We particularly enjoy reading everyone's comments and/or experiences while in the same areas. Thanks for your input; it’s much appreciated. Also, if someone has Bob Frater's email address can they send it to us? This one’s a short one and takes in our three nights and two days in St. Cyr. Wednesday, August 29, 2007 - Arrived from Aix, had dinner, went to bed. Covered in the previous blog. Thursday, August 30, 2007 - A very quiet day in this wonderful house. We sat and read and I finished my book, and Kevin finished his. We went to the local supermarket for dinner. And that is THAT! Friday, August 31, 2007 - ... read more

August 25, 2007 - Up bright and early for a full day in Arles. I had read that there was the local market held on Saturday and as well as a Provencal fabric shop, and lots of Roman ruins, which, among other things, is what Arles is famous for. It also turned out that they were having a “Roman Week” that ended on Sunday so we could catch a couple of items there. First the market. I just LOVE the French (cross out - fresh) markets. I could smell the freshly baked bread two stalls down. I haven’t seen that many types of olives in one place together in my life! And just all the other stuff. I got some retail therapy in, and we bought up large. We had the cooler (Chilly bin) with us, ... read more

So Marseille was kind of a dud...It seemed like a very cool town, but we were exhausted after lugging around our gigantic bags, and our hotel was out in the middle of nowhere, so we basically just relaxed in the hotel. The architecture was very cool, with lots of loft style rooms (one had a clear plastic floor on half of it so you could see into the room below) and winding staircases and ladders. We had some great brick oven pizza from down the street, made use of the free wireless, and slept alot. The next day we made it to our flight out of Marseille for Casablanca, which might be the worst flight I've been on in my entire life. But we made it safe and sound and that brings me to my next ... read more

Aix is a prestigious student hub offering buzzing nightlife, art, culture and architecture. It is only 25k, from Marseilles. It is like a mini Paris, classy and chic, expecially the main tree-lined boulevard, Cours Mirabeau, which is bordered with cafes on one side and a string of Renaissance private mansions from the 17th & 18th centuries on the other. This is where the fashionable Aixois go to flaunt designer labels and sip expressos. Aix seems to be addicted to fountains. There are three fountains alone along Cours Mirabeau, including the massive cast-iron "Fountain de la Rotonde", dating from 1860 and guarded by haughty, stone lions. The life of local Paul Cezanne is treasured in Aix. To see where he ate, drank, studied and painted you can follow a walking circuit guided by footpath-embedded bronze plaques. Some ... read more

Breakfast with Celeste was quiet and tasty - as a treat, I went with her across the street and bought myself another brioche aux raisins for my last day in Nice. She was leaving the next day. We said goodbye, I checked out, and went to the Nice train station to buy my ticket to Marseille. Ideally, I should have done this yesterday to avoid the crazy morning lines, but c'est la vie. I didn't have cash on me (risky) so I tried to pay with my visa card but it didn't work. I tried to convince the man behind the counter that it wasn't my card, so he called over a supervisor. By then the nervous sweat had started and I pulled on my shirt thinking "why is this room 10x hotter now than ... read more

We were meant to be heading off to Finale Lugure today but we adjusted our plan as we realised how expensive Milan is. So instead we stayed an extra day in Marseille and plan to stay in Nice for the day before moving on. Really lazy day today got up at mid-day and spent to day with Thomas. I think he felt he was obliged to show us around Marseille, but he really didn't know where to take us and comunication was quite difficult!!!... read more

Well the vile crap hole known as cebere station was brightened significantly by our second randoms we met, known only as 'The Irish', joke guys if your reading this. Really cool bunch of people. I was sitting in the station waiting for this god forsaken train when I noticed that they were playing shit head lol. Of all the games. Had a really good time chatting to them, man they bounced off each other it was hilarious, they should do stand up. One line I remember was: -- I can here fookin trains -- Of course you can hear fookin trains, were in a fooking train station Classic!! Our random banterings went on through the night and it ends up we are basically doing the same route as them, bar slightly different dates. Hopefully, actually ... read more

Those who don't know who Nadine and Vincent are, Nadine used to be my au pair when I was young and we have been in contact ever since. Nadine now have 3 kids of their own, one of which is coming to England in a week or so as I did to france a couple of years ago. So Nadine and Vincent very kindly put us up for a couple of nights and made a very good job of hosting us. Had a really really good day today, it was nice just to sit back and let Nadine and Vincent lead on and take us places without having to think about anything. Hot showers as well - oh baby. Also before we went out, got picked up at 0530 - ouch!!, we had plenty of ... read more
