InterAct, a group of French students who help out the international students, organized a bus tour of the city of Marseille for us. Unfortunately I forgot my camera, but I plan to return on a sunnier day to redocument the trip. We saw some beautiful architecture and churches. Marseille is such a huge city, well developed and inhabited. The bus tour was amazing. I was able to meet many new students from all over the world also studying abroad, as well as make friends with the other seven students from San Diego State. After the tour, a group of SDSU students along with a group of Latin American students (all became friends) and stayed in downtown Marseille. We all helped eachother get monthly bus passes because the city has a very great bus system that brings ... read more

The French Riviera epitomises all that is glamorous and fabulous about the south of France, and I send fond greetings from this spectacular part of the world. What a difference a four hour journey on the TGV can make, as I have been basking under glorious blue skies every day, after arriving from damp and chilly Paris on the train. Just as Paris displays in it's glory all that is old, traditional and romantic about France; the French Riviera and Provence show the brash, young and dynamic side of the country. The last journal left off, dear reader, after a day trip to super rich Monaco from my hostel in Nice, and my final night back in Nice included going down to the mediterranean just before midnight. I lay down on the pebble beach while listening ... read more

In an attempt to replace my devastating memories of Australia's defeat to England with happier recollections, I again headed to Marseille - this time by plane - for Renee's 29th birthday celebrations. I am happy to report success! A crew of 8 of us stayed in an awesome villa at Carry le Rouet, about half an hour from Marseille itself. The villa had great views across the Med to Marseille itself. Luckily for the rest of us, Rich and Rhona (who flew in from Frankfurt - we are such an international crew) had arrived early and sussed out the way to the villa (and Rich had got his desire to drive the wrong way round roundabouts out of his system). Also luckily -despite a late arrival in Carry le Rouet - we managed to find a ... read more

Les Calanques de Marseille - Cassis This has been the best part of my trip so far! Superb rock, fantastic scenic routes, amazing views... I swapped numbers with an Irish guy, Derek, in Chamonix and we met in Cassis. We bivvyed in En Vau for a few days, on a ledge two-thirds up a cliff, paying "bread rent" to a mouse. Check the view up from our house and you'll understand why it was worth it. We did quite a few multi-pitch routes. Absolutely beautiful! I started leading a 40m high, small crimpy holds 5c+ thinking it was a 5a and was very pleased to get to the top. I also experienced my first two leading falls, on a 5c and a 6a routes. Scary but funny at the same time. Hurt my foot but was ... read more

well ... the rugby didn't exactly turn out as expected, but i suppose that's part of the problem ... expecting victory, when it should be fought for and won. heart will get you most of the way. the wallabies and the all blacks didn't have the heart. on a brighter note, my luggage has finally arrived, and my all black gear can come out some time ... the all blacks will always be a great team no matter what people say about the world cup. will be out tomorrow looking for some fiji paraphernalia to wear! who would have thought? marseille - what a place. it was heaving today with many many rugby supporters form everywhere. heavens know what it is going to be like in paris next week, especially with the blues in the semi ... read more

What can I say. Twenty eight hours in the air, three airports (including heathrow ... the evilest of all airport empires) miniscule airline food, queues, not enough sleep, and finally a day to recover in aix-en-provence, about 30 km north of marseille. ok, it's the wrong city to be in if you are a nz rugby follower, but from sydney, it was kind of difficult to sign up for a nz tour, and in the end, the tour i signed up with was far more economical - i get an extra week plus two quarter finals thrown in. but what a long journey ... the flight from sydney to london was changed and so guess what? yep - lost luggage. so i'm only just getting out of my lived in for twenty eight hour clothes after ... read more

We left Barcelona and made our way to Marseille via a train switch in Montpellier. The station in Spain could only get us so far into France, and we had to try our luck at another train to reach Marseille. There were some kids in the Montpellier train station who were getting the full benefit of recently waxed floors by sliding across them like baseball players. Erin said that the backs of their pants were black by the time they finished. It was great to watch kids having fun. In the meantime, I went on an extended search for a bathroom, only to return dejected. I’ve got to learn to start going on the train. I even tried a McDonald’s outside the station, but its bathroom was out of order. After Erin got our next train ... read more

Today was our last full day so we had decided to try and fit in as much as possible. First of all we walked up to the Palais De Longchamps, it had good reviews in tourist guides as a large animal park and tribute to the water gods. We got lost and found the side entrance. We were disappointed we had even bothered going there as the park was devoid of animals as it was under construction. Fortunately we found the fountains at the front entrance which were worth the walk. We had about 3 million photos in front of them (Nicola and Jaimee's boyfriend Joel have a joke that Jaimee and I take photos of any fountains we see, sadly they are probably right, I think I have a problem). Next on the cards was ... read more
