After an ill-fated attempt to go to the famed, or infamous, Chateau d'If prison off the coast of Marseille yesterday, Arlette and I arrived very early at the old port and got two tickets for the 9am ferry to the island. It was a gloomy day, that added to the mystique of the trip. The boat ride over to the island was very fast. When we pulled up alongside the hunk of limestone jutting out of the sea I felt bad for all the people who came to this island and never left. It's not a comforting place. We climbed up the path to the prison and outbuildings, and the two ladies who run the museum raced up the path ahead of us to open the gates to the top of the rock. We had to ... read more

Looking back at Marseille

(Written on April 30) I was able to get a "direct" train to Marseille - meaning I didn't have to switch train stations in Paris (always a plus as the metro is not fun with my huge bag). This would be my first train ride alone, so it was pretty cool to just chill by myself for 6.5 hours. I got quite bored. By 2:30, I was in Marseille and was greeted with a beautiful sunny day, and Kim was in a tank top. I felt overdressed immediately! (I had a button up shirt and jeans). First thing we did was put my huge bag in a locker at the train station so I wouldn't have to lug it around town all day. The plan was to pick it up later that night. After this, Kim ... read more

So this weekend I went to Marseille to collect info on the theater there for my research project- because I'm that kind of overachiever that I decide to do a school project 3,000 miles removed from the school. However, I couldn't find the above-mentioned theater, so in some ways the whole of my Saturday was wasted. But not really, because I still had a good time. I decided that Marseille would be the first site I would grace with my presence because I figured that it was close and I didn't really know what I was doing. When you don't know what you're doing, I've found its always better to do it in a large city where no one will remember you being an idiot. I immediately started my day this way by making the poor ... read more

18 days. What went through my mind when i booked my ticket for marseille? u tell me. i've never been so bored, people are still the same, lazy, rude, always complaining, loud mouth, please someone put me onto the next airplane. so what happened since the 11th? i've seen tons of doctors, i've been brave and had my wisdom tooth taken out, been eating a lot and sick a lot; my body must have got used to bad food in England but it was so worth it, don't forget that i'm gonna starve for 2 months in Asia. I've seen all my friends, my parents, been told by my ex-boyfriend, in short, to piss off, life couldn't be better. the good thing was maybe i got the chance to see 50cent perform yesterday night and it ... read more

We're sure Marseille must have been a beautiful city years ago, but unfortunately it looked like it was having a hard time keeping up with its population. The rumor is that the city has a lot of crime, although better than it used to be. Interesting because, right outside the train station on some massive flights of stairs there were men in camo with huge machine guns slung on their shoulders! We walked through the city to the Vieux Port to take a 10 euro boat to a nearby island where the Chateau d'If, fortress turned prison that is famous by the Count of Monte Cristo story resides. The funny thing was that the boat passed the island giving us a nice view of the famous prison and then continued on to another island farther out ... read more

10.08.2004 - Week full of surprises Marseilles, France Yesterday I spent the night at a place, I would have never thought I would - in a hotel room! I arrived in Marseilles on Sunday late afternoon with intention to make as much money as possible and then depart to Spain in the morning. Whenever I come to a new city, I find a hotel and leave there my huge backpack for a few hours and if possible use some free internet when I come and pick it up. This time, too, I left the big heavy backpack in a hotel and went entertaining the streets of Marseilles. After successful evening and night, I went to the hotel and started chatting with the receptionist. After an hour or two of pleasant chat, he asked me if I ... read more
