Saturday – Angouleme, stuck in car parks and new gite for the week. Woke early Saturday morning and did our last packing and said our goodbyes to our Dutch hosts before heading on our journey to Angouleme. The countryside changed dramatically with less trees, more rolling countryside and vineyards as far as the eye could see. A very different landscape to the rest of the Dordogne. Noticed loads of motorhomes en route but no British so the plan of speaking to British motorhomers had gone out the window. Most motorhomers seemed to be French with the odd Dutch mingled in between. Stopped at Angouleme to break the journey as back aching sitting in the car seat. We were not too impressed with the city – first of all had an interesting conversation in the Post Office ... read more

Monday 12th Roaming en Rey, the Three towers , kite surfers Cannot believe just how awful the weather has turned out to be. Have been to France before in September and it has always felt like Summer but this time it has the feel of Autumn with leaves falling off the trees and today drizzle and blustery rain. Unusual weather that did make us wonder if we getting the tail end of the hurricane which was hitting Britain. Felt lost without the internet to find out what was happening in the world. The plan for the day was to go to La Rochelle. This is a place I have always wanted to visit and Glenn and I had decided last year on our way back from the Catalunya MotoGP that we would have a few days ... read more

Had planned today as a beach day, being the last day we are to spend on the coast, tomorrow we go inland. Change of plan, far too wet for beach today, in fact it was grey and drizzly nearly all day and all attempts to dry the washing under the awning have failed. We sneaked out, between showers, to the lovely big pool and had a good swim in water which was far warmer than the temperature of the air. A little later, taking a break from reading, we were tempted by the beautiful endless sandy beach. We took a walk along it and spotted a few hardy souls swimming but think our swim in the pool was probably far nicer than theirs. Tomorrow we head for Bordeaux. Weather from Saturday looks better and hopefully even ... read more
Not much soleil going on here
Now I remember why I swim in the swimming pool not the sea.
The sea here is extremely frothy and leaves bubbles behind

Fortunately the forecast heavy rain did not materialise, where we were anyway. A bit in the night but once we were out and about the weather was pretty fair and a couple of times the sun was quite hot. We left the lovely Ile de Re, over the impressive soaring bridge and bypassing La Rochelle we headed due south. We decided to check out Rochefort as not been there before but though there were lots of parking spaces, they were all already taken. After driving round rather aimlessly for a few minutes while we worked out where we should go we decided the best option was to leave. Back to our southbound road but this time heading across the scenic Marais where we saw herons every 100 yards, we crossed La Seudre, a mighty stretch of ... read more

Good early start again today so we could get to the morning market while it was still open. Bob unloaded the scooter and off we went to La Flotte as we had been advised that this is the best market to visit. Quite right too. A traditional market place, outdoor, where one could imagine markets just like this had been held for centuries. Ok, maybe some of the produce was a bit too modern for that and maybe rather more tourists around nowadays. We bought some lovely sea bass and Ile de Re scrapable new potatoes which later made a lovely dinner. Also bought a couple of things for my ‘Xmas present’ drawer as unable to resist them even if it is rather early for that. Would have kicked myself later if I hadn’t. La Flotte ... read more

Our campsite : La Grainetiere in La Flotte, Île de Ré: Made an extra effort today and got going by a more reasonable 10:15. Concerned that the Ile de Re is a very popular spot and that we needed to get to campsite as early as we could to make sure we got a pitch. The drive was not far, only 60 miles but we needed to stop for a weekly shop on the way. Pleasant drive through the countryside, past fields full of sunflowers and corn. We easily spotted a Carrefour and stopped to stock up the fridge so we now have enough food to keep us going for several days. We’ve visited Ile de Re twice before but it is such a lovely place to be. We crossed over the bridge, from near La ... read more

Scooter out of the Tandy garage and time to explore this interesting part of France – Le Pays du Marais Poitevin de Deux-Sèvres. It is a very green area, criss-crossed with canals and the river Sèvre Niortaise which comes out in the bay of L’anse de l’Aiguillion just above La Rochelle. We decided against a visit to the main town of Niort a few miles to the East and instead visited the smaller towns on the river which are specifically in the Venise Verte area. Our departure was delayed for an hour when the heavens opened and threw all that they had at us but after that the skies cleared and it was a remarkably lovely day. First stop, Coulon, 2 miles down the road from our Venise Verte campsite, along the river. There was a ... read more

Campsite = Campsite de la Venise Verte – near Coulon What a grotty night's sleep. Just behind us on the campsite was a large and very scruffy caravan. The occupants of pitch number 77 know who they are (though I doubt they could manage to read this) and are lucky they were not lynched by the rest of the campsite for the incredible racket they made, loud mouthed yobby adults and screeching kids, until 2.30am. At one point, in desperation, I confronted them (in my nightie) and asked them to please shut up so everyone else on the campsite could sleep but they just laughed rudely (and my French was perfect !). I reported them to reception before we left and they were obviously known there. The sunshine of yesterday had become hidden behind a curtain ... read more

Monday 11th July 2011 Up and off early to make the most of our day out at Parc du Futuroscope located 10km north of Poitiers. This is a theme park with a difference based upon multimedia, cinematographic and audio-visual techniques. It has several 3D cinemas, a few 4D cinemas and numerous other attractions and shows, some of which are the only examples in the world. The pavilions of Futuroscope are mainly made of metal and glass: modern materials which give the buildings form and texture and themselves qualify as works of art that make the observer stand and stare. We have visited the park on several occasions before and always have a great day out mixing old favourites ( usually the ones based on motion simulators ) and new exhibits. Today's exhausting itinerary includes amongst others ... read more

Friday 8th - Sunday 10th July 2011 On today west across country to stay at a friend's French property for the weekend. We have stayed here most summers over the last 12 years and know and love it. Peacefully located in the heart of the French countryside but within easy reach of numerous local amenities and attractions and with lots of outdoor space for the boys to explore it has been ideal for family holidays. We are grateful to have been given the opportunity to stay. Our only excursion on this visit is to the local town of Couhe and its magnificent medieval market hall to pick up provisions for the weekend and a bottle of Huile vierge de Noix ( virgin walnut oil ) from a local producer to take home. We also catch up ... read more
