Today I went to the market with Maria, who wanted to buy a billy goat and 4 turkeys. The goat was to 'service' her three nanny goats, who ara all in season, and the turkeys where to breed more turkeys for dog food. This is country life man! So we set off to Rouillac, about 30km away. And how good was the drive. mile after mile of open countryside, and hardly a car in sight. No road works. No traffc jams.No road rage. No stress! I really could get used to this.............. Anyway, we got to the market, which was full of little traders selling their chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, turkeys, rabbits, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, you name it. But not a goat in sight sadly. I was looking forward to driving home with a randy ... read more

No entanto, obviamente exceções aconteciam.

So my apologies for not updating this from my summer holidays.. it was so long ago I can't remember all the little stories but I'll do what I can!!!! So we drove from London, caught the ferry to Calais then made the long journey to Isle de Re, a small island off the south coast of France. To sum it up, it was amazing. We were in a brilliant camp site minutes from the beach, where we made bon fires at night and watched shooting stars... the best night was when we sat on the beach, drank wine, cooked up steaks on stones over a fire, and watched shooting stars... The weather was amazing, the tans were awesome and it was a really great week!!! We visited lots of the little parts of the island, and ... read more

The wedding was phenomenal ... Before we came to Europe I would dream about the wedding and what it would be like to be in the French countryside attending the wedding, enjoying wine, champagne, & food and meeting new people. The reality was so much more than I had dreamed. Max's mom and dad have a chambres d'hote on the upper level of the medieval village of Parthenay. It has a great side yard and garden and a view over the whole lower village. On Thursday evening we all went out to a wonderful 4 hour French dinner at a very small restaurant in the village. All the courses and all the wine options and dessert and cheese and appetizers -- WOW! We left the restaurant at about 12:30am and walked through town. Each pub, tavern, ... read more

Not much to say today apart from I'm 25 miles ahead of schedule, thanks to a very favourable breeze. Went through La Rochelle about 6pm, stopping for a raclette and tomato juice, ending up in Rochefort. I worked a few things out today though - pretty much impossible to get served food between 2pm and 6pm, even in big towns. - the D111 between La Rochelle and Rochefort is not meant for road bikes. - how to ask politely for my water bottles to be filled. - The meaning of ralentisseur. The last one coming as a bit of a shock at the bottom of a rather steep hill. Off to Bordeaux tomorrow, although might keep going if still feeling ok. There is a place called 'La Barp' which sound like fun, just a bit further ... read more

So here we are in the Marais Poitiven which is a little hidden treasure only known to the locals. In fact, when I mentioned that France's 'Green Venice' was our next destination even alot of french people did not know of it. It was really hard to follow signs on the way to the canals. One would appear and then we wouldn't see another for 20 minutes. I think that mum was getting a bit concerned about taking so long to find the Hotel but my instincts got us there again. We ended up in a sleepy town with three or four buildings and a church all around a square. We took a short rest and then headed to find this 'Green Venice'. Again no signs, but following a dirt track took us to the head ... read more

All right, so my last entry I believe I left off giving a brief description of the farm, but I have pictures this time. It was quite a simplistic old farmhouse, but it was so simple and peaceful, even Anne Coulter could become a more pleasant person if she stayed there. After working long hours of pulling up weeds, I would grab a glass of vin rouge and watch the sun set behind a curtain of weeping willow branches. Then we would eat a large delicious meal that Joyce cooked (we ate very late) and drag ourselves to bed, only to do it again the next day. I loved doing everything 'the old fashioned way' even down to feeding the goats and hanging the laundry on the clothes line (I take great pleasure in the simplest ... read more

Spent the week in a gite in a small village called Brives sur Charante, outside Cognac. The weather was bitterly cold with an icy wind. The gite was owned by a lovely couple and we had many cups of tea in their converted farm house. So cold that we didn't manage to play golf or cycle so we resorted to the next best thing, eating and drinking. We visited the Henessey distillery and explored Cognac and Saintes. Next stop Valencia for the Fallas Festival. Yipee ... read more

I rented a bike and rode for hours and got lost. I was out all night because I couldent find where my hostel was and for got the name I was pretty out of it as well if you know what I mean. I need a hot shower I could live in the shower for a few days. Although my skin might fall off and I might pass out and hit my head on the mould ridden tile on the floor. I wonder what is living in those cracks? I think it might be dangerous or maybe im just over reacting. Either way I think im going to go and sit with my face in the toilet for a while and just think about things as I see vidually what I ate for diner the previous ... read more

Hello all, I can barely write this as I am so full it hurts all my extremities to move even one finger! We left cognac this morning to a horrible rainy day, so we drove straight to beynac (had the weather been better could have been one of the greatest drives, twists and turns, ups and downs, all through beautiful forest) except a quick who's who in anglueme, where we picked up a cheap pre paid phone, a lovely French man helped us with translation(people outside Paris seem too be more friendly, but much the same as Toronto, everyone is nicer in rural areas). We arrived in beynac about 5 pm, with a lovely reception from the Dutch owners who upgraded our room because it is slow right now,and the village is gorgeous, like something out ... read more
