Our Scottish mate Graeme had invited us 3 years in a row to spend Christmas with his family in France, and finally this year we were able to accept. Graeme's parents live in Saveille; a small rustic (?!) village not far from Bordeaux, and about 14 hour drive from Prague. So it probably would have been better to have gone a year where we didn't have a 9 month old in the car, but we were hopeful for a Christmas miracle! We were also hopeful for a white Christmas after a mid December dump, but it turns out that Baby Jesus had other ideas. You see, in the Czech Republic it is Baby Jesus that flies through the window and delivers gifts on Christmas Eve. St Nick comes earlier in December accompanied by an angel and ... read more

Continued… I bit down and did the only thing I could do - I emailed an emergency help request to every SERVAS member in Poitiers, leaving only my phone number for them to reach me - and located the town’s hostel as a backup measure. Then I hit the road. I had to hurry, as it was already 2pm, and the ride was at least three hours to Poitiers. I was lucky to have a clear sky and no rain, and that was enough for me. About 70 kilometers West of Poitiers I rode through one of the most beautiful towns/landscapes I’ve ever seen in my life. If I have ever seen a place to start a bed and breakfast, this is the place. I’m looking at a map right now… it looks like it must ... read more

28-08-09 1st week in France and the future is looking brighter in shades! We sailed from Plymouth to Roscoff with a fine smooth crossing, getting into port at 10.00pm and we were the first vehicle off the ferry. Things quickly took a turn for the worse when 15 minutes later our sat nav. sent us into ever narrowing backstreets in search of a mythical overnight camper stop. A fairly high level of stress was endured by both our vehicles occupants; however Liz did a great job of getting me reversed in an incredibly tight spot (in the dark). She only told me later about the 20 foot drop (pit) which I missed by inches, apparently she didn’t want to frighten me (female logic?) That aside, France has been terrific with some fabulous overnight camp stops ... read more

Well the preparation start for the main event. We started with a nice wedding of Annes friends David and Louisa-Jane. Great event with a lot of free drink and a great mix of Irish and French. If anyone is looking to have a wedding in France they should definately look at Normandie. We were located in a large country home with about 20 bedrooms. It was like something out of a movie, so picturesque (photo's will arrive). After all the partying for the wedding which went on till 1030am the following morning we made our way to the TGV straight to Poitiers to Anne's family. Was a nice week although quite a lot more relaxing than the wedding. Took it very handy and managed to get burnt in one day of Sunshine! Highlight of the week ... read more

Ola chicas!! When we last spoke to you we had just arrived in Tours. Not much to mention about Tours, just a quaint town straddling the Loire river, deep in Chateau country. Despite its small size we still managed to busk twice and make a reasonable €40. After another dead on train journey courtesy of SNCF we arrived on the West coast into the town of La Rochelle. This bustling seaside town boasts the Atlantic's largest Yachting port, home to over 3,500 boats. It´s watery entrance is guarded by three imposing towers dating back to a while ago. Our 1st few days were spent lazing on the beach and getting towered off our faces! Ok! Lesson number one for all you budding travelling troubadours out there. . . . . . nothing happens until you busk! ... read more

Internet access at last!!! I can’t believe its nearly two weeks already. The time is going so fast and we are already at our 5th stay!! What has happened so far……… First campsite was ok, the area was pretty. Both children then went down with a tummy bug! After a few days I got itchy feet and woke one morning wanting to move on. We took a family vote and on the basis of the next campsite having toilet seats and paper, we decided to move on. Du Haras campsite just outside Vannes was in fact much nicer. Next to an aerodrome it was quite pleasant to sit and watch the small airplane fly above and then watch the parachutists jump out and float down. We then moved on to our first Wwoof experience not knowing ... read more
