Monday 12th Roaming en Rey, the Three towers , kite surfers
Cannot believe just how awful the weather has turned out to be. Have been to France before in September and it has always felt like Summer but this time it has the feel of Autumn with leaves falling off the trees and today drizzle and blustery rain. Unusual weather that did make us wonder if we getting the tail end of the hurricane which was hitting Britain. Felt lost without the internet to find out what was happening in the world.
The plan for the day was to go to La Rochelle. This is a place I have always wanted to visit and Glenn and I had decided last year on our way back from the Catalunya MotoGP that we would have a few days in La Rochelle. However the car broke down on the way back and we had to abandon all hope of getting there and returned to Wales early. We had hoped this year that we could remedy that and today was the day. The journey was less interesting than we expected and the best bit has to be when we roll up to the French tolls and head straight for the Telepeage. We watch the French drivers thinking “Strange Brits going to the wrong gate – they will have to reverse and go to the pay one” We sail through and smile. We decided a few years ago to buy one of the little boxes from Sanef that you put on your windscreen that adds the toll charges to our credit card and it has made life easier sailing through the tolls. We will need to send it back after this holiday as there is now a different one and we will need to upgrade to a Class 2 for our motorhome.
La Rochelle was a pretty place. Good parking on the Car Park Jean D’Acre right in the middle of the harbour area and close to the three towers. Ideal for motorhomers as there is no height barrier. Strange how we were starting to notice these things along our journeys though this part of France. We spent the morning visiting the towers all of which afforded lovely views across the harbour. A place worth seeing and I am glad we finally made it. Sion had his photo taken on the harbour wall.
In the afternoon went over to the Isle de Re. Quite costly to go over the bridge 9 euros for a car but not sure what the motor home charge would be. Free on the way back. It must be still reasonable as the island seemed to be full of motorhomes parked on every spare bit of land. We drove up to the furthest point on the island and saw many bikers. It seemed a paradise for bikers but I was rather disappointed. Perhaps it was the blustery weather and the drizzle which made wonderful weather for the kite surfers on the beaches but was hard work for walking. We did enjoy walking around Saint Martin which seemed more bustling with good shops and restaurants. A well preserved Vauban fort seemed worth a visit particularly on a nice day. Sions tips: La Rochelle well worth a visit at any time of the year.
