Today is Tuesday, Tom and I are going to retrace some of what we did yesterday on tour because I wanted to be able to take some pictures early in the morning when the light is better and be able to stop when I want. Yesterday walking with a group did not allow me the opportunity to take photos at my own pace and being with 30 other people all trying to get pictures of the same thing sort of ended in me getting pictures showing a bunch of other people with cameras and phones in their hands. Definitely not my idea of album worthy photos. After breakfast Tom wanted to catch up on a little work and I was happy to explore on my own. Camera and cell phone in hand I decided to power ... read more

We were treated to a fantastic breakfast provided by the hotel. Served on the second floor where you actually get to see the tops of the beautiful crystal chandeliers sparkling. Breads, fruits, meats, cheeses, egg dishes, bacon, sausages, and eggs abound. It reminded me of a quote from Dad if I filled my plate too high, "your eyes are bigger than your stomach." I wanted it all but managed to restrain myself and just have some fruit, bacon, a stewed tomato, and.....okay you got me.....one very small chocolate croissant. Today we are part of a guided tour around Prague. Having never wanting to be part of an actual guided tour, I was leary. Tom and I usually grab a map of the city, wherever we are and head to the oldest part and work our way ... read more

As expected it was an exhausting journey to Prague. 18 hours and three planes later we arrived as scheduled, luggage in hand to the most Eastern part of Europe we have ever traveled. A representative from Viking Cruises met us and a few other travelers and transported us to our hotel. From the outside our hotel seemed old and weathered by the passing of many decades but once we entered into the lobby the old and dated melted away and was quickly replaced by the well restored and beauty of the pre-world war II era. Polished brass, marble floors and inlaid walnut molding graced the entrance way. High above our heads gleaming crystal chandeliers sparkled. Our room is very generous in size with a very large all marble bathroom. We unpacked and laid down for a ... read more

I stayed up late trying to blog but kept dozing off. I optimistically booked a 10:00 free walking tour through Sandeman. I knew wasn’t going to make it then, but there was a 10:45 am slot available I almost didn’t make that one. I walked down to the Old Town and it was quite hot out. We had a Czech as our tour guide. It seems like Czech humour is a bit self-deprecating as seen in his explanations for historical sights. On the tour I met a beautiful Brazilian woman Patricia. The tour was not exactly free as the guide said he’d be more that willing to accept donations once the tour was over. After the walking tour was done we walked around a bit ourselves and got some gelato. On one end of the Charles’ ... read more

I found my hostel in Prague, and was instantly made to feel very welcome. The people who work there have a few nights that they make food for everyone (which can be up to 200 people), and they put activities on every day & night. That night was free food and a musical talent show as there was a piano and guitar for people to play. All the people staying at the hostel were really friendly, and it’s the best hostel I have stayed in so far. After dinner I was taught how to play the card game, Irish snap…(which if you don’t know it, causes potentially severe injury to fingers!) and then a group of us went out for drinks at a local bar. The bar may be the strangest place I have been! It ... read more

Good evening from Munich! My sincerest apologies that my entries are a tad delayed, but finding down time has been difficult on this trip - I'm normally on the go from early til late, and just feel like collapsing in a heap in the hotel room at the end of each day. However, I have started this blog with the intention of actually keeping up with it, so enjoy the musings of a knackered Kiwi haha. I've always wanted to visit Prague after seeing a photo of the Charles Bridge. That bridge seemed to a younger me to be the equivalent of the magical bridge as seen in the Thor movies (if you haven't seen that film, it is basically a fancy space bridge that sparkles and is really colourful and pretty). I was also keen ... read more

We headed for Prague Castle via Malostranska. In 2005 we got off at Hradcanska and strolled through Royal Garden towards the entrance for the castle. This time we took the No.2 2 tram from Malostranska to Prazsky hrad. We weren’t sure which would be the right stop, but one of the local people let me know where to get off. It was the lunch time when we arrived at the castle site. We had lunch at the terraced restaurant garden. From where we sat down we could see its striking spires and towers of St Vitus Cathedral. My father said, ‘The cathedral look like Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona.’ My mother expressed interest in visiting Josefov, Jewish District, after looking round the castle. I said to her that there were several buildings we were going to ... read more

Cubist buildings, Post modern buildings in Prague It was at 16:30 when we finished looking round Dvorak Museum including the ground of the Villa Amerika. My mother was still full of beans and wanted to see Cubic buildings along the river on the Vysehrad district. On the other hand, my father was tired. I suggested he would have a rest in the hotel. After leaving souvenirs in our rooms, we headed for Vysehrad via the Dancing House and the riverside. It was still very hot; we saw many people having parties, swimming and sunbathing along the river. Our destination was further down on the Rasinovo nari, Esplanade. Just after going past the railway bridge, we found the house of Kovarovicova – one of the most famous examples of Cubist architecture – was designed by Joseph Chochol ... read more

We took the Metro from Malostranska to Staromestska, and had ice cream on the Old Town Square. It was very hot – it was a job for us to find empty benches on the shadow area of the Old Town Square. Afterwards, we walked to Josefov, the former Jewish town. We firstly arrived at Maisel Synagogue. By showing our Prague Cards, we were given the free entry to several synagogues including Maisel Synagogue. This synagogue was founded by Mardecai Markus Maisel, Primate of Prague’s Jewish Town under Emperor Rudolf II, and had Jewish Museum showing the history of the Jew’s in Bohemia and Moravia from the 10th to the 18th century. Next we walked to Pinkas Synagogue. In terms of their architecture, the Pinkas Synagogue and the Old-New Synagogue are the oldest and the most important ... read more

I was responsible for organizing the itinerary on 24 June. I’d already decided to visit Alfons Mucha’s Museum and Drorak Museum. At night of 23 June, I decided to take my parents and Mark Wenceslas Square, Astronomical Clock of the Old Town Hall, Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, Charles Bridge, Church of St Nicholas via Mikulase Street and Lesser Quarter Square. On 24 June we got off at Museum and walked through Wenceslas Square. The renovation work was carried out on the façade of the National Museum. I told my parents that this boulevard like square was the place where reform movements – ‘Prague Spring’ in late 1960s and the ‘Velvet Revolution’ took place in 1989 – and more than 500,000 participated in demonstration on those events. The modern battle place has been transformed a ... read more
