Today was a little more relaxed, how could it not be?! We had a plan and we managed to execute without feeling like we were on a "mission". We made our way down to breakfast, it's included in the room price, but to be honest, you can only eat so many European hot dogs and half cooked pieces of bacon before wishing there was something else! Nevertheless we muddled through, coffee is always good and for me there are Mimosa's to start the day, and when I'm on vacation that's always a must have. We wanted to visit the "New" Jewish Cemetery, which is where we have plots for both my Grandfather's family and my Grandmother's family. Most of them are not actually here in Prague since they were killed in the Holocaust and never recovered, ... read more

Today was probably the most difficult for me emotionally, I love history and especially medieval history, so Prague is a perfect fit for me. But today we ventured into the past in a way that I haven't done. I know many people who have and I believe that because I know the stories, I can handle it. I'm strong, I'm rational (most of the time) and I know what I'm walking into, right? Not so much! we hired a driver, the same one who brought us to the hotel from the airport, he has become my dad's number 1 fan, just loves him and his stories. He takes us to Terazine, for those who don't know, Terazine was a work camp during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. ALL Czech Jews were processed through that camp, and ... read more

Well today we all felt a bit more rested and ready to face the day. The weather has been beautiful and promises to continue to be all week. This morning we headed out to begin our day on a walk through the old Jewish Quarter. Dad was once again the ultimate tour guide, as we made our way through the Old Town Square he talked to Anthony about living there and explained the massive statue even "googling" to make sure he had the dates right! We managed to take our own tour of the old synagogues and learned about their histories. We started in old church just of the square where my father and aunt were baptized in 1937 as my grandfather grew concerned about what he was seeing coming out of Germany. My grandparents made ... read more

Hello from Prague, We arrived 30 minutes early this morning thanks to the Jet stream, and managed to pull dad away from the lovely and intelligent woman he was sitting beside for 8 hours. We probably managed to to get 3-4 hours sleep which wasn't too bad. We found a cab easily, and made our way to the hotel. Along the way as dad bonded in Czech with the driver, he took a detour and we drove to the apartment building where my dad and his family lived when they returned to Prague from Shanghai in 1946. We all got out of the cab and took pictures, my dad was beaming, he was beyond happy to visit this place and tell us stories about their life and how he and his best friend Gustov got into ... read more

We left Bitburg, Germany very early on Thursday and drove to Nürnberg, where we turned in our rental car and got on a bus to Praha. The bus ride took about 3 1/2 hours. We found Jennifer, who was in Prague as part of her Cold War history tour, and took her out for dinner. We stayed at the Hotel General, which was nice, but it was quite a walk from the old town, so we took a lot of Uber rides back and forth. On Friday, we saw the Pražsky Hrad castle complex, Strahove Monastery, Wenceslas square, Charles Bridge, old town, and the town square with the astronomical clock. We could have spent several more days there - Prague is a beautiful city with so much to see.... read more

It's getting to the end of our journey and we are both very tired. Still so much to see but day by day we have less energy to see it with. This epistle begins with our day trip to Pompeii. An early start to get to Termini station by 8.30 meant the quickest of breakfasts before a morning walk past the Colosseum (nice to see it without masses of people and dudes relentlessly trying to sell you a selfie stick. Honestly, if I was a selfie stick kind of girl and was going to Rome, I would have brought one with me and really don't need 15 guys within a 500 metre radius chanting selfieselfieselfie). The train from Rome to Naples was ridiculously fast, which made up for the trip from Naples to Pompeii - on ... read more

Saturday, 22nd April 2017 Breakfast at the Sovereign Hotel was a sumptuous affair with 3 varieties of sausages, well-cooked veggies, salads and plenty of breads to choose from. From the hotel, we mapped out our walking route to cover most of the Old Town sites on foot. The only place that required public transport was our journey to Petrin Tower via the iconic funicular from Ujezd Station. The Old Town is littered with monuments, private museums and dark towers. We chanced upon Henry's Tower which we thought it was the Powder Tower initially. Anyway, both towers looked rather similar and the Henry's Tower made some nice memories when photographed against the charming red trams that crisscrossed the city. Very soon, we made our way to the famed Old Town Square where the famous Astronomical Clock and ... read more

Friday, 21st April 2017 We started our day with a 7-hour railway journey to the city of Prague, about 525km from Budapest. The journey started well and there were helpful porters who showed us to our seats. Halfway into our journey, we understood why. Apparently, the train car and seats we had reserved on the Hungarian Railways were simply non-existent. Soon after our lunch, we had to give up our seats to another passenger who apparently had bought valid tickets on the seats that we occupied. We learnt that this happened to a few other passengers as well including the 2 Korean ladies we met on-board. Towards the last hour of our journey into Prague, we managed to occupy some empty seats vacated by alighting passengers though. In all my years of rail travels, this was ... read more

After a 4 hour train journey, most of which I spent asleep dribbling down myself, Minx and I had arrived in city 3: Prague. We had been promised 70p pints, and nothing but the sesh from east to west. But when we arrived in the train station, I was well under the weather, and got minx to direct us to our accommodation. With it being Easter weekend, we saved abit more money by renting an AirBnB. We walked up the hilly streets of Prague to meet Theresa, one of the owners of the flat. She gave us the keys and went on her way. Due to the long day, we he were pretty boring the first night, so we took a quick walk to the shop, minx cooked some Macaroni and cheese (Sooooo good to get ... read more
