Today was a little more relaxed, how could it not be?! We had a plan and we managed to execute without feeling like we were on a "mission". We made our way down to breakfast, it's included in the room price, but to be honest, you can only eat so many European hot dogs and half cooked pieces of bacon before wishing there was something else! Nevertheless we muddled through, coffee is always good and for me there are Mimosa's to start the day, and when I'm on vacation that's always a must have. We wanted to visit the "New" Jewish Cemetery, which is where we have plots for both my Grandfather's family and my Grandmother's family. Most of them are not actually here in Prague since they were killed in the Holocaust and never recovered, but that isn't the point when remembering them. So we visited, and this time I made sure I photographed every name and date. My plan is to finally sit down one day and document my roots, both my Mother's side and my Father's side. Of course we tend to talk mostly about my dad's history because of the situation, and how we need to ensure
we share the personal loss inflicted on this one small Czech family as a way of documenting the past and educating the future children of this extended family. But there is much to research and document on my mother's side too. I know my Great-grandparents were all immigrants to Canada from the UK. My paternal Great-Grandfather came as a boy on a boat to Halifax and somehow ended up in Saskatchewan. His wife, my Great-Gran came as a mail-order bride at the age of 15. There is no historic trauma in this story, but there is history and uncovering it is important to me.
We took the metro/subway, heaven help you on those high speed, steep incline monsters, they will eat you up and spit you out! And we had a good walk, ending back at the St Charles Bridge where we walked across, took pics among the million tourists (we aren't tourists, we're ex-pats!) wandering to the other side where we decided to have lunch on the river, Uh-Oh!!!
We find a lovely restaurant with tables in the shade right on the water; dad - "what the hell is this sh*&? This is French cr&^ I don't
want French food, I want Czech food! I'll just have a beer" Anthony "i'll just have fries" me; "I'll have the mango and papaya salad along with the spinach and goat cheese pie and a glass of Australian Sauvignon Blanc: dad; "okay I'll have the salmon gravlox" Further whining about the fancy stuff, how ridiculous it is that in Prague you can't get Czech food, and Oy, what a mistake, we picked the wrong restaurant. I, in the meantime thoroughly enjoyed my lunch and was quite content 😊
A short ride by cab back to our hotel, a rest for dad, a rest and a walk for Anthony and some work for me. Then off we go to dinner, the guys went right back to Svetchkova, I have to say it was better than the previous favorite spot, I have pork, quelle surprise. Then a walk to the square a little dessert and now we are in for the night. A lovely day, beautiful weather and lots of laughs.
