Brussels has a comic museum! Yes a museum to comics and the tiny nerd with pig tails and braces and super thick glasses inside of me (or you know the one you see on a daily basis) was so not going to pass that gig up so off I went with my museum loving roomate Sarah and my dearly beloved Ryan. There was a whole section for raunchy comics which kept us laughing oh so very long. And then there was all this great tin-tin stuff. After we had seen all the fun comics we headed off to the royal art museum to drool all over thier magritte collection. They had some of the most amazing paintings I had ever seen included but not limited to Cranach's Venus et l'Amour & Bosch's tryptique de la tentation ... read more

LSAT scores came back. In light of this development Taylor & I decided it was high time to get very blitzed in the hotel room and then head out. Blake poured a beer down my leg then proposed marriage (I considered it, oh yes I did. He's southern-ey & funny, it was tempting). And my sweet wonderful Michelle taught me how to do keg stands on the tiny keg Andrew & Taylor had purchased. Then we were off to dinner at a classy establishment named "the eatting factory". How classy are we? That's about all she wrote. ... read more

I was sooo apprehensive about taking another night train just because of our last experience in Venice, but because of the sold out day train, it was our only option. Turns out it wasnt so bad. It wasnt too hot, and I actually slept this time. But we arrived somewhere in Germany at 5:45 am and had to wait an hour and a half for a connecting train to Brussells. Luckily there was a McDonalds there to help me through that one :) We arrived in Brussells pretty early and found our hostel pretty easily. The hostel is right in the middle of the downton area, so everything was really close. As we were walking to our hostel, Heidi saw a place where they were selling Belgium waffles, kind of like they sell churros, so after ... read more

We took a train to Brussels this afternoon and upon arrival we were led around the town by a crazy, CRAZY, man in a panima hat and a white suit. I've made it a new rule that all crazy europeans need to wear panima hats and white suits. Being in Belgium we immediately began consuming vast quantities of waffle and beer. You know what else? MAGRITTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's right my great sweet sweet surrealistic boyfriend was a born and bread Brussels-ian. So I wasted no time finding a beautiful art-book store and stocking up on magritte postcards and fondeling calder books. Mmmmm art. Then much after that Ryan and I went out on a quest for this bar called L'hommo erectus. We had Mary, sweet virginal innocent Mary, in tow. So L'hommo erectus is like THE happening ... read more

I didn’t know what to expect from my stop here. When I had told people that I planned to spend a few days in Brussels I was asked “why?” on more than one occasion. Yet the Lonely Planet guide starts it’s description with “it’s hard to fathom how Brussels got labelled boring”. Due to the mixed reviews, I decided that three days may be too much to spend in Brussels itself, so I stopped off in Antwerp on the way and spent a day there. Known for it’s art and architecture…….it was a fairly impressive place. A strange mix of French and Dutch speaking here, as well as influences in general. The same applies for Brussels…….almost as if they can’t decide on an identity so choose to be both. While the buildings in Amsterdam were relatively ... read more

Well it was an eventful day & night ! We went to bed reasonably early but a couple of Aussies in a camper van sat up half the night drinking with some guy who was obviously trying to pick up. Not sure if he succeeded, but was giving it his best shot. Spent the day in Brussels which was great, although big mistake trying to drive in. Will use public transport next time. Thanks to the nice policeman who suggested we park somewhere safer just when we found where we wanted to be. Didn't fancy getting the car broken into on the first day. We saw the Grand Palace and some of the royal family as the Dutch King and Queen were in town for a visit. Had lunch in the beautiful square surrounded by amazing ... read more

Well the real holiday finally started today with us leaving the UK and catching the ferry from Dover to Dunkirk and then driving the couple of hours to Brussels. It’s been 4 years since our last proper holiday together (our honeymoon in Greece) and we have been looking forward to this for some time. Thanks to Ness (Rach's sister) for lending us her new car and all the camping gear. We arrived in Brussels late afternoon and decided to just sit back and relax for the evening with pasta, wine and chocolate. ... read more

Brussels was a unique city in that the French and Flemish cultures were melded together and infused with a fair amount of British and American culture as well. Most of the people we met in Brussels spoke a minimum of three languages (English, Flemish, and French). Many also spoke German. The people of Brussels were proud of their main attractions, which we visited, including Grand Place, and the infamous Mannekin-Pis (a small bronze statue of a urinating child dating back to the 8th century and exemplifying some of the unique Belgium humor). The Grand Place was hosting an interesting Lavender Fair, teaching the residents and tourists all about how lavender is grown and processed throughout areas of Belgium and what an industry it has become. The Belgium lace shops, of course, abounded, along with many street-side ... read more

Left the hotel and made my way back to the train station. It was obvioulsy market day as the street was closed off and everyone had set up their stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables among other things. Found a little corner coffeeshop/bar where i stopped for a morning coffee and pastry. I couldn't believe at 9:00 in the morning they were still serving people beer! Made my way back to the airport and had to wait an hour before the check in opened for my flight to Reijkavik with Iceland Air. I was travelling on a stand-by ticket so have to wait until they close the flight, usually thirty minutes before departure. I was told there was only one seat available and as long as no-one tried to check in in the next couple of ... read more
