Well I survived my trip up to Brussels and even managed to find my B&B in the outskirts of town, in the dark. Booyah for Sarah! I took the most uncomfortable tram ride ever up to the Helmet district and found this little townhouse where I was staying. The owner, Karl, was really nice and I had a great room. In the morning I had a nice breakfast to steel myself against the drizzly rain outside. Then I hopped the tram back down to the North station and walked south into the old center of Brussels. I stopped off first at the cathedral, then made my way to the Grand Place with all the ornate buildings around it. It kind of reminded me of Venice for some reason. I also took a little detour down a ... read more

Greetings from Belgium...well to be honest we just arrived in Berlin this evening, but internet has been scarce/keyboards have been warped, so I'll have to start from the beginning. First off there was our flight to London over a week and a half ago. No problems. I had an aisle seat with two empty seats next to me! Unfortunately our in-flight entertainment consisted of Aeon Flux, Bridges of Madison County and everyone's favorite sitcom, Cheers. No thank you. Regardless we arrived in London ahead of schedule and without incident. Our luck continued to our connecting flight, and all was going well. We arrived in Amsterdam just past 9pm, tired but excited to finally get out into the fresh air of the city. We boarded the train to the city and patted ourselves on the back for ... read more

Unfortunately after a couple of days of wonderful sunny weather, I’ve been let down - it is dark and miserable here in Brussels today. Started the day once more looking out across the Grand Place whilst having breakfast - if only the weather had been better. Decided to brave the inclement weather and caught the Metro (train) out to the European Union area of Brussels. Wandered through Jubilee Park, just beautiful and green - even in the wet. Spend several hours wondering around the Musee De Larmee Et De L’History (Museum of Military History) - quite an interested array of modern and ancient war artefacts. Took a walk through Leopold Parc and visited the EU Parliament. Visited the Konklisk Paleis / Palais Royal - whilst on my way to collecting some of the important and very ... read more

A lovely breakfast at the Hotel (included in the package) looking out across the roof-tops into Grand Place - a nice start to a wonderful day. The continental breakfast with the freshest pastries was divine. Met with Belgian Customs today at the Zaventam Airport. Spend the remainder of the afternoon wondering around Brussels - visited the Cathedral of St Michael & St Gidula. This places is spectacular on the outside and only gets better on the inside. After wandering around today, I’ve started wondering about the Australian attitude towards international visitors. Here in Brussels shop owners seems to have to be able to converse in several languages in order to survive, but how many Australians have ever bothered to try to learn another language to assist international visitors who enter their stores. Isolation as a nation ... read more

Left for Brussels in the morning on BMI Air - the airport (Heathrow) was a mad house, but I did manage to find the right plane. Plane was almost empty (to the point where I had a whole row of seats in front, behind and beside me empty). Caught the training from Brussels airport to the CBD - attempted to find my hotel. Tip for new travellers - don’t ask the Police for directions - I ended up walking to the other side of the city before a friendly local pointed me back in the right direction. Stayed at the Hotel Arlequin. I took a walk around Grand Place and the surrounding area - managed to stumble upon Mannikin Pis. Had dinner on Rue De La Boucher - a very busy eating area with lots of ... read more

From Amsterdam we caught a train through the Netherlands and Belgium to Brussels where we would spend the night before heading back to London for work. Johan and Bea were heading to Paris for three nights, and we were to meet up with Luke and Carmel on their way from Switzerland. As soon as we checked in Luke and Carmel came to meet us, with some valuable possessions they had picked up for us in Lucern. The last time Liani and I were in Switzerland we found these beautiful rings which we bought one another. Only problem was we had to wait until Luke picked them up on his way through Luzern. Needless to say it was nice to recieve them and to see my brother who had been travelling for the previous three weeks. After ... read more

Once the program was over, before I could head back to Seattle, I had one day to kill. A classmate from mine was going to visit family outside of Brussels, invited me to stay with him, and thus solved the problem of what to do with the extra day. We shared a taxi with Aphrodite and Niccoleta (both from the Masters program in Portsmouth) and then took the train into North Brussels from the airport. After dropping off our bags, we headed into town and I was able to get the idea of the flavour for the capital of Europe. It perhaps would have been nice to have done this sometime before the day of my departure from the continent, but I was thankful to have made a brief pass through before flying back to North ... read more

Everybody needs somebody else to love. Shout it out. Shout it out above from heaven. Shout it out, shout it out above from heaven. Needs somebody to love... needs somebody to love... needs somebody to love. Today, at PARTS, a dance outside the box. Beginning in a trash can, moving through piano tunes of crazy love played by Julien, dancing with a Coca-Cola can and the Bush administration's darling Lay's potato chips, and my own multinational clothing... I've been back from my travels a month now, and Brussels is its usual rainy self. But en route for Brussels I stopped off for a drink to celebrate April and Andrew's engagement in London (notice the sparkling ring!). Congratulations! I spent my birthday with my sis, Clare, and my adorable nieces. We did loads of great things in Brussels like go to the Children's Museum, as well as Oceade. But the most enjoyable part was the day we spent making things out of fimo, as well as the 'pop concert' Clare and I had to sit through... Anyway, I'm about to enter my last month in Brussels, so here is a picture of the view from my kitchen, midwinter! I love this view, and will be very sad to leave:(... read more

It's all very sad:( I'm back at work now, feeling most sorry for myself! For some mad reason I came in only 2 hours after landing, and 24 hours of travel is now starting to catch up. But that's boring, time to update on the last few days of my trip... So my last blog was in Playa, which I was (very guiltily!) enjoying as a beachy relax at the end of some relentess travelling. I went to Tulum with Becky, Ines and Julianna. The plan had been to visit the ruins and then so some relaxing on the beach. As luck would have it, it was a blinder of a day, and far to hot to consider climbing ruins! So instead we headed straight for the beach, and what a beach it was! It was ... read more
