Three months. That's the length of our travels around Europe. One week. That's the amount of time we have been here. But man does it already feel like a few months are under our belts. We have been cramming all the good and bad, the touristy and off-the-beaten track activities, and cheap, cheap, and more cheap food and accomodations under our belts way too fast. PB&J's are already getting old. We have stuffed ourselves with so much Belgian cheese that we won't hit a "water cooler" until we arrive in Italy. And the chocolate. Like we have never had before. We have adapted the saying of "When in Rome..." to "When in (insert present city here)..." We walk an average of 5-6 hours a day simply exploring the city. Getting lost is both fun and frustrating. ... read more

When I first think of Belgium, or Brussels, chocolate, waffels and beer comes to mind, all edible things. We spent two days in this city of fooding. First we walked down the large main street from our hostel only to end up in a slightly sketchy area with a large church in a roundabout. Well, the map lied to us and we were supposed to turn left on the main street, not right. So as anybody would do, we swiftly power walked to our destination after exiting the church. We were thoroughly surprised to be in Brussels during their 4 day flower carpet festival. We saw the carpet during day 2 so the sogginess hadn't really set in. Bright colours spanned the length of the center square. We even hopped up on the railing of somebody's ... read more

Ah, Belgium. Perhaps I was expecting too much, perhaps a certain 'Belgian' friend of mine had been a bit too indulgent in his praise of his country's magnificence. From what I had seen of the Belgian countryside during the train ride from Frankfurt, it really does look quite beautiful. But as we neared the capital, Brussels, things soon turned ugly. Brussels is a slum. It's supposed to be the capital of the EU, so I was expecting things to be pretty - well, pretty. But yeah, it's a slum, venture just a little outside of the miniscule centre around the Grand Place, and things get grimy pretty quick. I was also looking forward to getting sick on fine Belgian chocolate, but unless you know exactly where to go, you might as well be buying imported Belgian ... read more

Belgium....famous for its beer, waffles and chocolate......we've died and gone to heaven!! Okay, as you know we headed north instead of south and arrived a couple of hours later in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. We werent sure what to expect from this country, as we hadnt read up on it, nor heard many travel stories, so were keen to check it out for ourselves. Brussels is an interesting mix of old and new buildings, with a pretty cool vibe to it and as the guide books say 'Victor Hugo once said that Brussels 'Grand Place' (or market square) was the most beautiful square in the world'.......I think he was onto something! The 'grand place' consists of the beautiful town hall (among other buildings) dating back to the 13th century, with a traditional gothic baroque style, ... read more

(August 18th through the 20th 2005) A little more confident and assured about doing this on my own, I leave Luxembourg behind midday on a Saturday. Excited to go to a bigger city gets my blood pumping, and all I can do is just see the scenary the ride offers. I get into Brussels around mid-afternoon, and head out of the station to find the hostel I have chosen--from my travel guide of course. Getting out of the Gare du Nord is a bit confusing, and as I wonder around, I find my self in a shopping mall, trying to find an exit to the street. A bit awkard I felt carrying my bag on my shoulders in the middle of this place. Finally I find the street and get out onto Rue D'Argent, the shopping ... read more

Okay, I'm not gonna write much cos this keyboard has all they keys in the wrong spot and its taken me a week to write this one line. However I will just let you all know that we took a slight detour, and adjusted our plans ever so slightly...... We did go to Paris on Sunday night, took a couple of pics of the eiffel tower (92 to be exact) however discovered that the riviera was fully booked out so decided last minute to head north instead of south, and arrived in Belgium today.....aaahhh, the beauty of one way tickets.... and we're off to the netherlands on Friday. So.... it'll be 2 days in Paris, 2 days in Brussels, Belgium, with a side trip to Brugges, then 2 days in Amsterdam (would it be acceptable to ... read more

Arrived in Victoria Coach Station after a surprisingly comfy bus trip down from Edinburgh - thanks to some crazy Geordie drivers who overtook everything in sight we arrived early (6am!). Bleary eyed we make our way to Waterloo and note worryingly our shoulders are already aching from the packs... Met Claire at the unnaturally early hour of 8am (Sunday!) and spent a lovely morning chatting, drinking coffee and buying last minute provisions. Eurostar trip to Brussels uneventful and we hope the rest of the train journeys will continue like this. Arrived at our gorgeous Plaza Hotel (5*!) and took full advantage of our luxurious surroundings including the complimentary glass of champagne - off for a quick meal and then to bed early as we were exhausted. It all starts properly soon.....we'l update as often as we ... read more

Hello Everyone! We had five days to make a whirlwind tour of the Benelux and we decided we would start with Amsterdam, head to Brussels, and from there visit Luxembourg. We didn’t have the easiest time getting to Amsterdam because we were running about two minutes late to the train, but as we ran to our platform it appeared our train was still there so we jumped on. The train immediately started to move just as I realized it was the wrong train, our train (also running behind) would have been the next one to arrive. We stopped at the next station, only five minutes away, and returned back to the Berlin main train station to find a new way to the Netherlands. To top it off, it was the day after the World Cup Finale ... read more

Having left Dunkerque, I travelled south, taking the senic route through St Malo, Bethune & Douai. Visited a German V2 rocket bunker on the way, very eerie. Also visited a huge French cemetary & memorial from WW1 (very touching) From there I headed towards the forest by St Amand Des Eaux (mineral water place, like Buxton). Just stayed 2 nights in campsite in forest, but got some good mountain biking in. Also provided a good meal for mosquitos. Next place to visit is Mons, in Belgium. Strange campsite, bit like an allotment for caravans, in the middle of the city. Turned up just in time for a festival, something about cock fighting and the equinoxes. Anyway, procession in streets & live bands, excellent. Took a day trip to Brussels (cheap weekend train ticket). interesting city, with ... read more
