Brussels was definitely an interesting weekend, and I think it accelerated the desire to return to Chicago. More on that in a sec . . . This was the first, and not the last, that I was all by myself (cue Eric Carmen). Alli & Andrew were off to a skiing trip in the Alps (about that, it’s the warmest there in 1,300 years), Katie booked herself a trip to Paris to see family friends, and Melissa decided to stick it out in Nantes. I wasn’t too worried about being alone, I’ve had enough time with maps and my trusty little compass to figure out where to go. And unlike previous excursions, I mapped out exactly where my hostel was. No wandering this time. The trip was quick, about 5 hours on the train (seriously, 4-hr ... read more

Hokay... so, let me just say that Brussels was the sweetest little city ever. I was bummed at first about having to make a pit stop there and shorten my stay in Amsterdam, but after the fact that is most certainly not the case. I saw a lot of cool things there such as the colonne congres, with the tomb of the unknown soldier from wwII and the eternal flame. Also I walked through the parc de bruxelles, which was gorgeous with all the foliage changing colors. Then I made it to the Palais Royal, which doesn't seem to serve much of a purpose apart from pure awesomeness. Also of note were the grand place and the musical instrument museum, from which we saw quite an amazing sunset. The hostel I stayed at was almost as ... read more

Bonjour mes amies, arrived in Brussels after a brief train ride from Amsterdam through the countryside - the tulip fields are looking very green and keen for Spring to come along; only two windmills spotted yet a million bikes in Amsterdam! Brussels is just picturesque, though the cobble stones are a killer on the feet! Not as many bikes as Amsterdam, though there are chocolate shops on every corner :-) Nick actually ran into a Treasury colleague in one! Great to get stuck into the French food and language - we have had to speak French quite often as many don´t get Nick´s aussie slang...! It´s lucky we are walking everywhere because the food is divine and there is cheese in every meal. Last but not least the beer!!! Heading off to the beer museum now ... read more

"Beer is our local culture. Support the culture." Beer is not just a drink in Europe, its a way of life. Europeans are actually required to drink a minimum of three beers a day here. It is custom is to imbibe at least one drink before dinner (in conjunction with the oft-heard phrase, "meet me for drinks in the conservatory at 7), as well as partake in a drink during dinner, and finish with a sweet port or go for "after dinner drinks" later in the evening. This is a massive problem for someone who hates the taste of beer. However, there are ways around this. We had just arrived in Brugge and went down to visit the hostel pub. Adam and I chatted about what to see in the city when the guy next ... read more

I spent one day in Brussels on the way back home, mostly to do some shopping, to buy lovely Belgian chocolates for christmas (but don't say anything to my parents). I have been to Brussels several times before and already done all the tourist stuff more than once, but Brussels is a nice city and it's always nice to return there. I had no problems finding my way around, and of course visiting Belgium gave me another chance to practice my French a bit more. As in most French-speaking countries you tend to get much better service if you speak French. I had a long walk around the city centre but it was quite rainy this Saturday morning, so not all too enjoyable. In Brussels they make a big deal about being the centre of the ... read more

Brussels wasn't that great for me...other than the large selection of beer and chocolates. The city is just like any other city and it seemed pretty dirty. The center town square was pretty, but that was about all. The chocolates and waffels were definately the highlight. ... read more

I remember telling myself that I wasn't going to go to Belgium because I had heard that it was boring. I was wrong about Bruges -- I had a great time there. However, unfortunately, I was spot on with Brussels. In my written journal I called it a hole. In retrospect it wasn't that bad, but I didn't find too many redeeming qualities. I only spent one night in Brussels, and it was plenty. I saw the two main sights that interested me: the Mannekin Pis and the central square. The square was gorgeous -- very ornate and old and full of tourists trying to find a camera angle to capture it all (not possible, believe me I tried!). Not too far away is Brussels' (maybe Belgium's) most famous (by far) statue. There's not much to ... read more

Hatta adam cahil ols... read more

Just spent a weekend in Belgium with the International Club and it was great. I love traveling in Europe...the national border looked like a toll station on the New Jersey Turnpike and took half to time to traverse...hooray for the European Union and the era of the Schengen Visa! (Which permits you to travel freely, without hassel or red tape, between the core European countries which ratified the Schengen Zone Treaty). OK, I made up the name of the treaty but it's something close...you get the point. Preface: a quick geo-anthropological lesson Belgium is a small, northern European country situated on the coast between France and the Netherlands. It is known for: beer, chocolate, lace, and being the capital of the European Union. (But there are lots of other great things to discover too!) It has ... read more
