We had been busily trying to figure out what we were going to do for the next three weeks until we fly back to Australia. We had a few options, most of which involved getting back to the UK and leaching of relatives. We had been in contact with Mum and Dad, and they were keen for us to try to continue our trip. So what we’ve done is get some cheap flights to Rome, then to Barcelona and then back to the UK, so we can still see a good chunk of the Continent. A big thanks to our Dad, the budding travel agent, who organised all our flights. We decided that we should still have fun and see some sights and enjoy our trip, even thought having our stuff nicked really sucked. So ... read more

31st January Brussels An Unfortunate Event We got up a little earlier than usual, because we wanted to be packed and ready to get to the station on time so we could go to Brussels. We got to the station with an hour to spare, so we sat down on some benches and read the paper to kill some time. We met a couple from New Zealand who had been living in Paris for nine months and were heading home, via Amsterdam. It was really nice to chat to someone who spoke perfect English, albeit with a weird accent. Our train arrived and we got on and found our seats all right. I got really nervous when the ticket inspector came through, because the system for using a Eurail pass is really complicated, but we apparently ... read more

Ah Bruxelles! I finally broke out the bravery (and even a little Francais!) and did some sightseeing this afternoon. After a successful meeting this morning (and a delicious brie sandwich), I took a cab back to the hotel and talked with the family. Ever try a three way video chat when you don't have a video camera or voice capabilities? Hilarious. After talking with my family, it seemed ridiculous that I could see the Grand Place (pronounce it with a French accent and it sounds much fancier) but I was worried I'd get lost between there and the hotel. So I scrounged up a map and headed over there - really around one corner. It was a little bit of a let down, because my parents had spoken of it so highly, but the architecture was ... read more

I have returned from my dining experience at Roue D'or. For those that know me well enough, you know that there are a few things on my list of "Do NOT eat" - such things as vegetables (especially green ones), any type of seafood, and pretty much anything that isn't familiar. I'm just kind of a basic girl. But it's hard to be that way when traveling to such glamourous places, and with such fancy people, as our lawyers are. After I met our lawyer, I was delighted when he took me to a little Brasserie, called Roue D'or. According to their card, it's "The Place to be in the Heart of Brussels." It was totally empty when we arrived, so the attentive waiters helped us with our coats, and seated us at a tiny table ... read more

I am in Belgium, tired and very cranky. The meeting in Lisbon this morning went well though. I never screwed up the courage to walk around alone, but I was able to see more of Lisbon when I went to lunch with another of our lawyers along the Tagus River, at a modern, upscale restaurant called Belem Bar Cafe or BBC. Aside from the tents that they were erecting right outside the windows for the restaurant's fifth anniversary party, the view was fabulous. The April 25th Bridge was in the background - apparently it's the pre-cursor to our Golden Gate Bridge. Our lawyer said it was the test bridge. The sun glittered off the water while we ate, which sounds and was beautiful, but did make me yearn to put my sunglasses on. I thought it ... read more

Hey Everyone! This weekend (Fri-Sun) I went to Brussels and Bruge with a few of my friends by train. The train ride was a little over an hour and very relaxing. I haven't riden on many train and I certainly enjoyed this one. When we got into the train station we realized that we didn't have the address of the hostel we were staying at...OOPS! It took a little while to figure out what was going on but soon enough we got there. The room we stayed at hold 6 people, 4 of them being us, and the other two were boys (mixed room hostel...interesting...). The first guy we met was Jamie, 32 from Australia and the other was Bastiaan, 25 from Netherlands. Both were very interesting but I didn't really like Jamie. He was a ... read more

After the fog that plagued London airports before Christmas, we were lucky to have clear weather to fly to Brussels on Boxing Day. No sales for us, it was off to the land of chocolate, beer, mussels and fries with mayo. Yum. Luckily enough, the Christmas markets in Belgium are open after Christmas so there were still lights, waffles, sausages, crepes and other delights for the senses on offer. The main square in Brussels was particularly impressive with a sound and light display every fifteen minutes, turning the historic buildings of the square colours that were never imagined when they were constructed. It even started to snow the first night we wandered through the town square which made it feel particularly Christmassy. The snow did not last, and the rest of the time the weather was ... read more

PLANES What a nightmare! We were scheduled to leave London today, 12/21. Woke up, turned on the telly and there they were, telling us all British Airway flights were cancelled due to fog and the fog will be sticking around until Christmas. Plus, 30,000 people were expected to arrive at Heathrow just this morning, not to mention the 2 million or so that want to leave for the holidays over the next few days. TRAINS We decided to get off the island. Booked a train to Brussels, connecting to Cologne, then another to Munich. 11 hours of train. Just barely made the train out of London. They delayed it to catch all us Heathrow strays. Since we left late, we missed our connection in Brussels. I am sitting here now at a café table in the ... read more

We decided to go on a 3 day trip to Brussels to experience the atmosphere and the build up to a northern hemisphere Christmas. We had a fantastic, relaxing time and were both really impressed with Brussels, the only battles being our intial mission to find our hotel and one of our meals at a local restaurant where we ordered off the French menu and ended up with fish meals instead of chicken (this was their mistake not ours!) We spent the majority of the three days wandering the maze of small streets in the city centre or heading out to the shopping areas with their little stalls. The best part though had to be the chocolate. The drink of choice was hot chocolate and they were amazing. They also had quite a good selection of ... read more
