Once upon a time (in July 2002), two young girls met in Paris at Alliançe Française. Karolina and Susin, two international students; one from the Czech Republic, one from Australia, became friends. This is the story of the reunion five years later…. Yes, it finally happened. My first reunion with one of my friends that I met while overseas oh so many lifetimes ago. Karolina and I have kept email contact with each other ever since our month together studying in Paris, and just this week I got to see her again in the flesh for the first time in almost five years! Just like me, Karolina is doing a study abroad program but hers is in Belgium, one of the other French speaking European countries. She lives in a little town called Louvain-la-Neuve Ottignes, just ... read more

Well today was spent on a day tour going to Ghent and Brugge, thankfully the weather had improved and lasted throughout most of the day, only got wet on the way back to the hotel and after yesterdays torrential downpour that is definately something to be thankful for.. First stop Ghent, about an hours drive from Brussels, nice enough little town, some stunning architecture, cant really say there was much to report about this place as we only spent 45mins in in but still good to get out and see other parts of Belgium.. Next stop was Brugge, this is a place I definately wanted to see after hearing about it, almost as much as Switerland from 2 boys who shall remain nameless ;P, again nice enough little town, but why all the hype boys?? Now I knew this was the case before I left home.. But now they are even striking me in Europe! What did I do to deserve this?! haha.. I finally went to a restaurant that had hot waiters, and oh yes, one was definately flirting with me, offered himself as dessert (hehe) AND left me a little note on the bill... The night before I left Rome.. Where is the fairness in that?! haha been whinging this whole time about unwanted attention and now I finally get wanted attention and its the day before I leave.. So not fair!! DAmm why didnt I go into that restaurant on my first night?! Why cant I catch a break in this department?? Ok now back to the travelling, considering this is my TRAVEL blog hehe.. Dank u wel, Brussel Merci beaucoup, Bruxelles When I went to high school we went on a studytrip to Brussels and Strasburg. We went to see the EU-headquarters and NATO and Wee Manneke Pis. It was interesting and I got to learn a lot on that trip. One of the things was that it is never a good idea to get drunk the day before having a lecture in the Commision. This I discovered after fearfully haven snorred through the entire lecture so loud that the people around me could not hear what was said. Anyhow, my point in this is not to retell embarressing stories of my life. I rather want to engage myself in the explanation of why I have ended up being where I am today. On one of our last days ... read more

My day began very early since my train left at 6:55 a.m. for Brussels, Belgium. I arrived very early at the train station having left the hotel at 5:30 a.m. I was very tired but my also extremely excited to visit another country, especially on my own. The train ride went smoothly enough and I arrived around 8:30 a.m. I bought a Metro pass at the station below the train station. I took several quick rides to realize that the Metro system in Brussels was not as easy as in Paris. The transfers were more difficult since you had ride much further to be able to change lines. On one of these early, complicated rides (a short distance, mind you) I witnessed a man get his whole hand shut in the Metro door. The doors ... read more

Okay, so on our way to Amsterdam we stopped for like 2 hours in Brussels. We had a little trouble with the shop and restaurant owners though...like we got out of the bus and walked to a square, passing a statue of Don Quote, and went on to the statue of the peeing boy. Then, after a few quick photos I stepped into a gift shop to check out the outrageous prices and we all got yelled at for touching the stuff. So we left and Shan and I along with about 6 other individuals got lunch at a restaurant off of the square...we then got yelled at again by the waiter because he did not want to split up the check (no one in our group could pay a $135 check). I did get ... read more

maybe it was just that we were coming from the glorious city of Paris and had been left with high expecatations to match what we had left behind, but Brussels was ummm.....well, it left something to be desired...mostly hand sanitizer! (by the way, i can be a little more descriptive now as we are in Amsterdam and "home row" is in its proper place :) ) the train ride from paris to brussels was awesome. we were served a light lunch and some drinks. i was unable to take pictures from the train as it went so freaking fast and i have a camera with the shutter speed only comparable to a snail crossing montgomery roads. (for those of you who know why i'm moving, you know what i mean). brussels was hectic from the moment ... read more

After our scrimmage game on Wednesday with Pole Espoir and a quick shower at the ‘stadium,’ I hopped in my Fiat and headed north for Brussels, Belgium. My good friend Kaneza had arrived a few days earlier with the Worcester Group. Kaneza is the Company Manager for the Wooster Group, a contemporary theater company based out of Soho, New York; they are touring Europe over the next month or so with two productions, one being an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the other an interpretation of ‘La Didone’, an Italian opera translation of the story of Dido and Aneas. The piece is a sort of fifties Sci-Fi film fused with the Italian Opera La Didone. I was supposed to meet Kaneza at her apartment but I was not sure exactly where her apartment was. My ... read more

TravelEuropean Family Vacation 2007 We arrived in Brussels around 4 PM on May 2nd, after leaving San Francisco the day before and flying through London. No problems whatsoever, the weather in Brussels was beautiful when we arrived. First off, we had to find the hotel; we had not asked for directions before we left and we had no cell phone, only an address and phone number. We figured that the taxi drivers would know the way, so we got a taxi -- however it only held 4 people. Jennipher, Acacia, and Rowan jumped in the taxi, while Ziah and I tried to find our way with the public map that was posted outside the train station. Eventually we all found our way there, but it was exasperating on both ends -- the taxi driver couldn't find ... read more
