Hoy es my fourth day in Antigua and I have already fallen in love with this place. The people are friendly, the town is amazing, and my school is awesome. It always stays between around 65 to 75 during the day. They call it the land of eternal spring. I have only had a couple classes and I am already having long, somewhat broken, conversations with my teacher. I didn´t think that I would be able to post photos but a girl has the same camera so she said she´d help me. On saturday me and a bunch of other girls from the school are going to the Pacific coast, which is supposed to be beautiful. When I come back I´ll have to upload some pictures of the black sand beaches, anteaters, and my painful sunburn. ... read more

Checking in from the Carribean coast, chillin in the small town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, just a little ways up from the border of Panama. I got into town a few days ago, and have been just lounging ever since. The town is pretty small, right on the ocean with a huge surf spot, Salsa Brava, right out front. I am staying at the coolest hostel I have ever imagined, Rockin J's, THE place to be down here. There are tons of other travelers staying here, with accomodations ranging from tents, to the hammock hotel, to shared cabins and even a treetop room that you climb 100 feet up to. There are travelers here from all over the world, and English is by far the least used language. Just sitting in the common area you ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Bay Islands » Roatán January 11th 2006

Uh-oh... camera playing up. Had to post her back to England for a bit of TLC, poor little lamb and having trouble connecting my disposables to the computer while I wait for a new one to be posted out to me here. Anyway, so, where was I? Fresh out of Xela and filled to bursting point with Spanish. Knowing only too well the virtues of language consolidation, the most sensible thing to do here was to head straight for Honduras' English-speaking Bay Islands for a spot of scuba diving. Having phoned ahead to check, I was pleased to discover that the journal I'd managed to leave behind in a hostel in Antigua was waiting for me, so I took a day off to stop off en route and pick it up. I was greeted with somebody ... read more

After another day at school.
Another long journey...

I'll attempt a synopsis of the week that followed: Jan 6 I awoke to a calm anchorage. Coming up on deck, I noticed a sea turtle floating past in the distance. I had coffee and breakfast, and discussed with the others what possible, leisurely itinerary we could take over the next few days. These plans would be nixed. Not even an hour later, we noticed the waves increasing and darker clouds looming. Captain then shouted, "We're dragging anchor!!" Stress, yells, the burn of the motor, the heaving bow as it heads out of the inlet, thrusting up and plunging down (with me on it) as waves and current plow through into the anchorage. We abandon Slaughter's Harbour, head north an hour, hoist the genoa, tack (turn to the east) and set a course south around the ... read more

This is the start of my (Carolyn's), hopefully, excellent adventure. It is the longest and loosest trip I have ever been on. This is not easy for someone who likes, well, order - I can hear my kids laughing about that euphemism. I will be traveling for about 103 days, through 5 Central American countries. I have a couple of hotels lined up for a night here and there. I have the names of some of the host families I will be staying with when I go to school in 3 different countries. THe rest of a day to day test of the power of the internet. Well, let's talk about the weather. I was led to believe that all would be sunny and hot, hot, hot. I left my fleece jacket back in Boston, brought ... read more

Three of us traveled down to San Fernando to be at the Supreme Court building by 9 a.m. and during the morning went for a snack at the Treehouse Restaurant. As we traveled back north, not far from San Fernando, we had lunch at Cara Suites, originally known as Farrell House but which recently had undergone a change of ownership, change of name and was completely renovated. These photos were taken that day.... read more
