Hello again! Ok, the exclamation mark is trying to be enthusiastic but I have a stupid head cold and I am very cranky this is REALLY going to be short! Jan 10th 06 Antigua - really fun day. Explored the colonial buildings. Andrew and I got a deep pore cleansing facial which was really good although a bit painful when they did their tweezer work. No I didn´t bully Andrew at all for those of you who think he was coerced. Afternoon - went on a coffee tour. Sounds boring but it was sooo good and interesting. Learnt how to taste coffee properly and how they make it and so on. Jan 11th 06 Travel day from Antigua to Rio Dulce. Stayed at a place which is basically shacks above a swamp, and which was the ... read more

The first leg of the trip is to Panama City. Margaret and I will go to Colon by train to view the canal. We will head to Costa Rica. We would like bloggers to tell us how to get to Monteverde. The road sounds rough. Do we have to rent a car or is there some type of bus? ... read more

We're almost there..... We close on the house a week from today, January 19, 2006. The date was pushed back from the original closing date of the 10th as the buyer’s agent wasn’t able to get his ducks in a row. The inspections and appraisal have all been completed. Now we wait for the title to record and pick up our check on the 19th. If things go without a hitch we’ll head for LA that afternoon or early the following morning to ship our belongings. From there it’s on to Scott’s in San Diego for a relaxing weekend before leaving the country. The vehicles have both been sold. We’ll deliver mine to the buyer over the weekend & Bill will keep the truck until the day before we leave. The buyer is only a block ... read more

9 nights, 10 days in Aruba. 1 olympic sized pool. Close to 30 hours of training. 2 ocean swims. 2 swimming related injuries. 1 boat ride. Countless flipturns. 3 people to a bed. 0 clothes. WAY too much money spent. Beastly muscles. thank you college swimming training trip. The swimming was done at the only competition pool on the island, the Piscina Olympico which is on the southeast side of the island, about thirty minutes from the high-rise hotel strip. We did not stay in a high-rise hotel of course, just near them. The pool was great.. finally a place large enough to accomodate the girls and boys teams at the same time. Some days we even shared the pool with a young team of Aruban syncronized swimmers, which was heavenly as you might have guessed. ... read more

... overshadowing the flaws in his thinking and his lack of actual achievements. A man to be liked more than admired, he fought with passion and was honest towards his own short-comings but has more fame than his 'achievements' deserve. A theme consistent in Latin American where the people are fond of lifting people to God like status, untouchable by criticism. In many ways they become a symbol for a idea, a movement. Maintaining the myth of perfection is useful in bringing a face or a name to cause or an idea, almost marketing it. Hence Zapata, a man who deserves more recognition, was only to found in the history books until the Zapatistas reminded us of him. There's a book, harshly titled 'Latin American Idiots' (didn't sell well in LAm), written by Latin Americans ... read more

Whooo Hoooo! Hooray! Yippee! Words cannot describe our excitement! I just got off the phone with American Airlines. Bear, our beloved four legged son is set to fly out with us on Jan 23rd to San Jose, Costa Rica. Now life is good & everything is OK! We’ve been on a daily roller coaster ride waiting for word he’d be able to fly. I’ve dealt with several airlines both in reservations and cargo. Until today the word was, Bear was not be able to fly due to an embargo on live animals and remains being allowed into Costa Rica For those who don't know about Bear, he is an 11 year old chow/giant schnauzer mix. He was rescued from a broken home where the human parents separated, each taking ‘their dog’ while leaving puppies to ... read more

The journey to Rio Dulce was quite entertaining. The kamikazi driver had a 'no fear' approach to driving, overtaking on tight bends and racing along bumpy mountain roads. The pit stop halfway for a toilet break allowed Karen to see the locals in all their glory. Rather naively looking for the 'ladies', she walked into the communal bathrooms to find an aging cowboy, pants round ankles. With toilet doors apparently being a luxury, he maintained the friendly Guatemalan approach giving a warm 'Hola' and a cheeky smile! Upon getting off the bus in Rio Dulce we were besieged by touts offering river trips and places to stay. We decided on one that was a short boat ride into the mangrove swamps at the side of the river. In a stroke of genius we had already had ... read more

I did mean to write this up as soon as it happened as it was so fascinating .. but obviously here I am trying to remember it 2 weeks later. We arrived into Havana and picked up some transport from the airport .. we were meant to being picked up but that failed to materialise so we found a guy who had a van who was leaving immediately and not trying to rip us off ... some people were asking $25 per person but we managed to get into town for $20 for both of us. The guy who was driving had a couple of other people to pick up and drop off so we got to see bits of Havana that we probably wouldn't have otherwise seen. The thing that struck me most was how ... read more

Lorena, myself, and my folks went to Nicaragua for the first time----I say first time because we will definitely go again-----in January 2006. What a great country! We didn't cover a lot of ground on this trip, but we experienced and saw so much. We flew in to Managua where we spent the first night before hiring a cab to Granada the next morning. We then stayed a few days there and made trips to Volcan Mombacho, Catarina, Volcan Masaya, and Masaya itself before Lorena and I headed south to San Juan del Sur and a couple of days at Playa El Coco. From there, it was on to Rivas/San Jorge and the ferry to Isla de Ometepe and finally back to Granada to reunite with the folks for a few more days before heading ... read more

Hola Familia y Amigos, We have been in Nicaragua a week now. We arrived in Managua then caught an early morning bus to San Juan del Sur, a small beach town on the Pacific coast near the Costa Rica border. It is a tourist town so there are many travelers from all over the world here. We have been taking Spanish lessons everyday, hence the reason for no postings until now. We have school each morning for 4 hours then activities each afternoon. We are staying with a local family that is just wonderful and very helpful with our Spanish. They have two sons who were living in New Orleans when the hurricane hit. They both lost everything they had in the hurricane so they are back home in Nicaragua for now. It was certainly interesting ... read more
