To maximize time we decided to suck it up and endure a 15 hour adventure that took us from Belize City across the border and then into Flores. At Flores we switched buses to an overnight bus that took us down to Guatamala city. I can´t say that it was a restful night of sleep, but we saved on accommodation for the night and got to where we needed to be. (The rough plan is to get south and work our way back up) They played a crappy Disney movie "The Princess Diaries" which i actually watched in its entirety. The only gem in the whole film came in a small piece of advice given from one character to another: "The brave may not live long, but the fearful don´t live at all." Little did ... read more

Since the rest of the vacation has begun to mesh together in my mind, I figured I would summarize it in one post: A few days before I left NY I checked the weather and was dismayed to see a 40% chance of rain each day for the entire trip. I told my mom expecting her to be equally upset, but she laughed at me. She told me that in the tropics there is always a 40% chance of rain but if it does rain it is usually only for a few minutes. True to her word, it didn't rain at all. Just one more reason not to trust the weather channel. We spent most of our time at the beach. I would have liked to have spent all of our time at Playa Flamenco, ... read more

I guess you can say that this is a lemon-to-lemonade type story. We both quit our jobs for similar reasons and faced with the prospect of being unemployed, we decided to do something we had dreamt and spoken about ... a world tour. With the decision made, we jumped into setting the priorities. We decided on the places to visit - from Cuba to Australia and most everywhere in between. We'll swim in the turquiose waters of Aruba, soak up the majesty of Kaieteur Falls in Guyana and sleep in the lush hinterlands of Surinam, admire the lights of Times Square, New York and segway thru Centennial Park in Atlanta. Maybe catch a game of cricket at Lord's in England and take pictures at the RLD in Amsterdam, take a safari in South Africa and gaze ... read more

Oh my, my, my! What a wonderful summer this is! So far, the weather has been just as gorgeous in Kentucky as it has been in the Caribbean! We have many beautiful lakes and mountains to explore, but I still have to constantly have my fix of palm trees and magnificent beaches! Not to mention-my sinus and allergy issues completely disappear in the Caribbean! It's so wonderful to be able to breathe! : ) We just returned from Anguilla, and, as usual, I have tons of awesome information to share with you! There is no way I will be able to squeeze everything into one issue, so you will get at least two issues out of this island! Anguilla, which rhymes with "vanilla', and means "eel" because of the eel shape of the island, used to ... read more

Well, tomorrow I fly to Costa Rica. To live with a family I dont know in acountry where I dont speak the language--Im a little nervous, but excited. Ive been wanting to do a language immersion program for years, and truthfully, this is probably gonna be my only opportunity to do it. Dreams do come true... So after working for the last six months to pay for this adventure, its finally here. I fly into Miami from Washington, D.C. and then straight into San Jose, CR. Someone from my program is picking me up and taking me to the local bus station which will take me to Turrialba, where my host family will be waiting for me. Did I mention I'm a little nervous. The feeling is similar to when i moved to Dominica, WI back ... read more

Before I begin talking about the trip, I figured I should start with how we decided to go to Culebra. To make a long story short, my Mom and I were supposed to go visit my Grandparents in Florida for Mothers Day, but my Mom and my Grandma got in a fight, and so we decided to go to Culebra instead. Now that thats out of the way.... I was skeptical at first, but I found out that 5:45AM actually does exist. I had never seen it before this day. Not a fan. After a 4 hour flight we arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Since we had another 4 hours to kill before our short flight to Culebra, we decided to take a cab to Old San Juan, which is the historical area. My ... read more

Casa del Sol Jenny´s castle in the sand and sun... a crab moved in shortly to claim it as his own. We allowed it.Hola amigas and amigos! The first week in the country, we were positively spoiled, so it makes sense that there must be a (slight) fall from grace somewhere. We got our first taste on a tour to Volcan Arenal. We decided we´d chance the weather (against the recommendation of our guide, Giovani) and take the volcano tour the next day as opposed to right after getting back from Rio Celeste. We were tired, after all, and wanted to enjoy our stay at the hotsprings. Oops, because the next night it rained for exactly the hour we did a jungle tour, and was clouded over when we went to watch the volcano. But that ... read more

Last week we arrived in Guatemala and we relaxed a couple of days in Rio Dulce. There is a very magic place called El Paraiso. It is a hot waterfall that plunges into a cold riverpool and there is a lot more to it than it looks. If you swim underneath the waterfall - the falls are boiling hot and you need to dive - there is a natural steam room and it is really amazing. From there we took a chicken bus to Flores El Peten and Lake Peten is really beautiful. We are going to stay in San Andres on the Northern shore for one month to volunteer with Volunteer Peten. San Andres is a small and relatively poor Maya village perched on a steep mountain. There are still a lot of houses ... read more
