North America » Mexico » Campeche » Xpujil December 5th 2009

Our journey to Xpujil (shpoo-heel) was absolutely first class. We commissioned a tour outfit to drive us from Campeche and show us ruins along the way, as an alternative to yet another day on the bus. First stop was Ednza (en-za). Without a doubt, one of the biggest and best restored sites we've seen on the trip. One feature that really stands out is how much open space. Another nice thing was that there were perhaps a half dozen people scattered amongst the massive area. Restoration work is ongoing, so we were able to peek in on some of the actual effort that goes into shaping a grown over pile of rubble into the impressive pyramids and complexes that make up the ancient Maya cities. To date, much of it is done by hand, one brick ... read more

Okay, this entry is a couple days late but we've been really busy and haven't had a decent Internet hookup until today. We left Merida on Monday because that's the day that most shops and major public buildings close to the public. So though it dashed our hopes of seeing the archaeology museum and having some kind of urban adventure, we were eager to push for the coast and some highly anticipated beach time. On the way we went through another military checkpoint as we crossed state lines, but the soldiers were really just going through the motions so I have a sneaking suspicion that my zip-tying our bags shut was a tad over zealous. One soldier was more interested in his Blackberry, to give you an idea. My first impression of Campeche was that they ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Uxmal November 30th 2009

Today was a busy day. No. Hectic, then busy. After a long day yesterday we felt positively bushed and decided to sleep in a little. Following the included breakfast at our hotel (Hotel Dolores Alba) we dilly dallied around our room fiddling with the Internet, composing a blog entry and taking a much deserved dip in the pool. Once we got our merde together, we booked a tour to Uxmal (totally last minute, as the group was nearly full) for the afternoon/evening tour that includes a meal, then a sound and light show after dark. Once we payed, we realized we had barely and hour-twenty to get to the market and buy some artisan crafts. Once again, Jenny made off like a bandito and now is the proud owner of a beautiful traditional-style, hand-crafted turquoise sun ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida November 29th 2009

Well, we finally made it to Mexico! It's been a long haul this year with our trip being put off a couple times but now that we're here, we couldn't be more happy with how the timing turned out to be more in our favour. Take this morning, for instance. Here in beautiful colonial Merida, it's barely 10AM and the weather is 24C but with the humidity feels just over 30C. And it's clear skies today. Should be perfect weather for some bargain hunting at the artisan market in the town's central market this morning. Later today we'll head out to Uxmal for an afternoon tour, dinner and light show. Uxmal will be our first ruins and should be amazing, not only because of the scale and grandeur but also (relative) lack of crowds (a la ... read more

Well, we've bought tickets and confirmed time off work. It's official, we're going to the Yucatan. Seventeen days of sun, surf, sand, jungles, Meso-American temples and ruins, spicy food, chicken buses, beachside cabinas, Espanol... Ahhh, Central America! Anyways, this post is to publish our tentative schedule. This is where we would like to solicit experience and suggestions from those who know the region. For instance, let us know if we're stretching ourselves thin or not taking enough time in a certain region/city. Or if it looks doable! North America » Canada » British Columbia » Nelson January 2nd 2009

Hi Everyone, Wanted to update you with our discovery of a new favourite (local) vacation spot. We went for snowboarding but fell in love with Nelson's charm and scenery. Locals are super friendly and there are so many neat little boutique shops and a variety of interesting restaurants. Our favourite spot was a diner called 'The Outer Clove,' where they feature -- you guessed it -- a garlic inspired menu. All I can say is, this joint is so far off the hook it's fantastic. We went twice. Jenny had a delectable curry dish one time and a falafel wrap the next, while I had a sinfully tasty cannelloni one time and the aptly-named 'Yum Burger' the other. Best of all, Nelson had the best powder Jenny had seen yet! The snowboarding conditions at Whitewater were ... read more

Catarata de Rio La Fortuna I A 70m sparkling ribbon of pure water, cascades down from on high.Yesterday Jenny and I were determined to make it to the La Fortuna waterfall, and that we did. After paying a moderate entry fee (3,500 colones each) we walked down the trail to the falls. The LP guide book claims it´s rather challenging, ´think stairmaster with a view´but it´s really not difficult at all. There´s concrete steps! The whole way! On the way back up, Jenny was able to easily keep ahead of some reasonably fit-looking local guys, food poisoning and all. Part way down the trail there is a view point with what would be a great view, if not for one tree sticking right in the line of fire for basically any good photo. Isn´t there some ... read more

Food Poisoning and Rivers Running Brown Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » La Fortuna By TicoTime May 26th 2007 Immaculate Scenery Caño Negro, in all its glory.Recall how we gushed about the best meal we´d had in the Teatro Nacional, in San José? Well we´ve been gushing for days, and paying for it aplenty. The entire time in the Caribbean side and our journey back to La Fortuna was fraught with headaches (of the loco local type and other of the melon kind) and stomach pains and let´s not forget, diarreha. Jenny got the worst of it. That´s because it was in her avocado chicken salad, full of sprouts and broccoli, and I just cleaned up her leftovers. So the first morning we were here (after suffering with it three nights in Cahuita, one more ... read more

My Friend and Escort on the Reef While Jenny built a sandcastle in the black sand of Playa Negra, this canine stood sentinel. Then Jen sent her off to check up on me, and then I had a new friend.Travelling around this wonderful country has taught us some interesting things about ourselves, chiefly among which we are mountain people as opposed to beach people. Not that we don't like the beach, because it's great, but we feel more at home in the mountains. There just seems to be more to see and do. And it's cheaper. The trip here was very neat, with waterfalls cascading down through the greenery along the roadside. Though it was tough to catch much of them as the bus careened along at a breakneck pace. We went through miles and ... read more

Two-Day Reunion Robert, left, and Jenny and myself are flanked by our musical entourage. Fantastico! This morning we went off for the Café Britt coffee tour, in the nearby Heredia area. Initially, we were skeptical about how good of a tour it could be with its (essentially) inner-city location compared to the tours offered in Monteverde. These skepticisms were quickly put to rest, as the tour guides proved enlightening and rather comical. They pointed out the organic procedures and growing arrangements, with other plant life around to enhance sustainability, what with bananas and mangos and more in the growing arrangement. After being schooled on the process of creating mature coffee plants, they led us to the factory where they roast coffee and continued to educate us on that part of the process. Here they handed out free ... read more
