Hi everyone, I am staying with a family again here in SJDS. There are many women in this large family and they speak fast, loud and often. So, unfortunately I don't get a lot of what they are saying. The food is great, though, and I have a large room and a private bath. For these hot, but deluxe accommodation I pay $80 for the week! And I will probably gain 5 pounds living there. I only have to walk about 5 blocks to the library and 5 blocks to the internet cafe. Also, I met a nice girl who teaches yoga 5 mornings each week and if I don't have to go out on the mobile library bus at 8 am I can take classes with her. The yoga is very basic and slow, but ... read more

I love Nicaragua not only for its natural beauty, but also for its diversity and culture. When we decided to put Nicaragua in our travel plans, we were thinking of its other neighboring countries such as, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatamala all the way to Belize. It was such a great thought to think we could reach these places if we only we stayed longer. As for Nicaragua, a friend of a friend recommended to go to this place. It is the most populous city located in coast of the Lake Cocibolca (one of the world's largest lakes). We made the decision to avoid going to the capital, Managua due to news of conflict and violence. Our journey took 2 hours from the Border of Costa Rica to the border of Nicaragua by bus plus a 40 ... read more

Hi Everyone, I am in San Juan del Sur and on Friday and Saturday I began my work at the library. Today is Sunday and the library is closed. I will be back there tomorrow. For the first two days I stayed at a hostel but now I have arranged to stay with a very big family. I have a much nicer room than at the hostel with a private bath and 3 meals each day. This morning I had a natatamale which was homemade my Marta, the matriarch of the family. Now I have the problem with my photos worked out and will upload some photos of San Juan del Sur and will write more tomorrow when I can get free internet at the library. Dawn... read more

Hi everyone, I had a really long day of travel and the most difficult thing about wasn't the time traveling but the extremes. I started out in Tampa and went to Miami. In the airports and on the planes it is very cold and I wore two shirts and a fleece. Once I arrive at the airport in Managua, Nicaragua then I needed to shed layers. I got a taxi to the bus station and started my trip south to the city of Rivas and then changed buses and headed southwest to San Juan del Sur (or SJDS). The buses and the stations are extremely hot. I sweated so much even though I had pants that rolled up. I didn't take the most direct bus because if I had I would have arrived after dark. My ... read more

Bus juist gehaald...propvol, uur (of langer) moeten rechtstaan, ons ergens in middle van nowhere laten afzetten (Chomez), lekker broodje gegeten waardoor aansluiting net gemist.

Na 15 ... read more

Still in San Juan Del Sur...... we love it here. We have built ourselfs a little traveling family here. We are staying outside of Hostel Esperanza, right on the beach. The water is nice and cool here, so you never over heat. We have been to Playa Maderas a couple of times now (it's a 30 min car ride out there) But there are some pretty nice waves, and they are even nicer when you don't have to fight for them (it gets pretty crowded). Our RV can't make the journey because of the steep dirt roads out to the beach, so we have been relying on the shuttle, and our friend we found who drove down from Ontario (got there the same day as us) Jordan got well toasted the first day of surf.... even ... read more

We have made it to San Juan Del Sur!!! to our surprise it wasn't what we pictured... the perfect break right next to the awesome Spanish school is non existent... instead, it is 8km trek to the beach which are rig won't make it up..(hill is to steep, a local told us he has seen taxis skidding up the hill as well as people pushing taxis up the hill.) and for the school, is a brisk walk from the hostel where staying at ( when i say staying i mean parked outside on a curb) It has been a few days since the last entry so I will begin at the beginning.... we woke up and began traveling towards the Guatemala border, we picked out a nice beach to stay at before the crossing in the ... read more

Hola from Nicaragua, I have been down here for almost three months and I have to say this was the best idea I have ever thought up for myself! Right now I have exactly one week of work at Buena Vista Surf Camp left. I was going to head down to Costa Rica next Friday, but then I was told of a yearly music festival down on Yankee beach (a surf beach close to where I am now). So, being the music lover that I am I decided I will head south on Sunday or Monday after the festival. My original plan of travel was to head South on the Pacific side of Costa Rica stopping off at a few various surf beaches on my way to Panama. Then once in Panama I would head ... read more

What to do today? I awoke after a good sleep with nothing really planned but couldn't find Matt. There is a diner just down the road so I headed there thinking he was already up and about. Nope, couldn't find him so I had a nice breakfast then decided I wanted to surf again today. I signed up for a trip then got all my stuff ready to go. Just as I was about to leave, Matt strolled in. He had been out at a different diner with some friends and didn't get served for a long time. I jumped on the shuttle heading out and Matt caught one an hour later. We met out on the ocean and surfed the day away. It was awesome but neither of us wore a rash guard and paid ... read more
