Just a 10 min walk from my house Hola from Nicaragua,
I have been down here for almost three months and I have to say this was the best idea I have ever thought up for myself! Right now I have exactly one week of work at Buena Vista Surf Camp left. I was going to head down to Costa Rica next Friday, but then I was told of a yearly music festival down on Yankee beach (a surf beach close to where I am now). So, being the music lover that I am I decided I will head south on Sunday or Monday after the festival.
My original plan of travel was to head South on the Pacific side of Costa Rica stopping off at a few various surf beaches on my way to Panama. Then once in Panama I would head to Panama City for their Carnival celebrations, then on to the Atlantic Coast (Caribbean) of Panama and on up through the Costa Rican Caribbean. From there I would head into San Jose, Costa Rica to get a bus that takes you to a border crossing called Los Chilies, which puts you just south of Lake Nicaragua where it flows into San Juan Rio (the
Christmas Day
I have progressed to a shorter board river dividing Costa and Nica). From San Carlos (the town at the mouth of the river) I was going to head back to the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua via the river. BUT it’s the dry season and someone that was just down there last week told me that they are not running the boats all the way down since the river is drying up. They won’t start running all the way tell mid-March. Mid-March happens to be the month that I will be back to work at Giants Foot Surf Camp. So it looks like I will need to dream up another adventure and do the river another time.
Since surfing has finally started to click I think I’m going to hunt for a cheap used surf board and just keep going with it. I would hate to lose all the strength I have built up in my arms and back from paddling, which is key. So I will still head south via the Pacific side of Costa Rica surfing as I go with the goal to be in Panama City by the 10th. The rest I will follow my heart!
Update on life in Paradise in the last
Cafe Azul
Sarah and I enjoying some smothies month and a half:
Well paradise is not always paradise. We had a week or longer wind storm which was so harsh that there was nothing to do. No walking the beach (sand blasted), no surfing (waves were small and you had to keep paddling in COSTANLY), when you tried to get out of the water the board was like a sail lifting you off your feet and out of your arms. The internet went down, and after a week one gets sick of only reading. Even sleeping was challenging since it was howling so hard. The house was a constant mess since we are and open air floor plan with dust and leaves everywhere. When the wind finally stopped we rejoiced to be able to hear the birds and monkeys again. I went to take a walk down the beach and the sand looked just like the snow does at the top of the mountains after sever wind.
All in all that’s the only thing I have to complain about. For Christmas my bosses Marc and Marielle gave Sarah (Marielle’s cousin that showed up and helped out for the holidays) and I a night out in San Juan
Crazy Crab
We were on our way to a dance club called the crazy crab and I demonstrated. (the city closest to us). They gave us money for the shuttle in, two dorm beds, and arranged dinner and drink at their friend’s nice restaurant. Then the rest was left to us. Well we did a good amount of proper partying, dancing, and running amuck of town. It was good quality fun, and I had the two day hang over to prove it!
Have I mentioned that I’m having a blast, and my surfing is going on well!
I got the job at Giants Foot as there cook for March-June, so I went again to visit them last weekend for three days and three nights and had a blast. They had a friend in doing tutorial video and shooting photos for the web site and they wanted me there to cook a meal, and help it look full season. On the last day we did a full surf tour of the beaches we drive the boats to. We drove since the boat is not in the water yet, but it was super fun! We stopped off at some hot springs on our way back to the compound. Once at the compound we partied it up Giante Style! Early the
next Moring I went out kayaking with one of the neighbor’s dad, and then headed home to began my last week and a half of work.
I will be sad to leave Madaras beach and all my new friends, but I have a lot of fun and really like the people in Giante so over all I’m looking forward to the new job. I’m really looking forward to traveling around for a month and a half.
I have started to have people be very interested in the fact that I’m already experienced in cooking fine dinners for small groups in the hotel format and it’s starting to seam that I might be able to find something that pays enough to really live here and get my dog down here. Time will only tell, but I’m keeping my eyes and ears open. Otherwise I’ll be moving back home for the summer with the hope of returning to Central America.
Love you all, and I hope it’s not too cold for you where you’re at. Otherwise you’re always welcome to visit me!
