Finally the beach! And a great beach it is that I was on before 4 pm the day of arrival. The sand is very fine and dark and gets everywhere, but oh so awesome after the heat and lack of beach of Granada. Ursina and I were in heaven as we are total beach girls! The first night found us watching the sunset while having a couple of Tonas at a beachside bar/restaurant. Later that night, San Juan had a power outage so out came the candles which only adds to the magic of the moment! The end of the evening found us at the Iguana Club, right on the beach and on the second floor which is perfect for catching the ocean breeze. We stopped at a dance club on the way home for a ... read more

When it’s hot and sunny it’s very difficult to be convinced that Christmas is close at hand. Even a good proliferation of plastic Christmas trees and solid smattering of fairy lights just didn’t quite propel us into the festive mood. When we were in San Juan Del Sur four weeks earlier, on the way back from a brief dip into Costa Rica to renew our visas, we had picked it as a good spot for Christmas. San Juan was a little fishing town not so long ago but with its big sweeping sandy beach lined bay and proximity to some stunning seaside spots the Gringos have descended. The hills have become peppered with some hefty sized properties which are set in stark contrast to the locals modest plots. For sure it is not real Nica but ... read more

I am travelling around using my Mastercard and debit card but Ometepe only had one cash machine that accepted Visa. My only option was to use the local supermarket guy who would swipe my card and take a 10% commission. After just getting enough money to get off the island by ferry I encountered the same problem in Rivas, where they had multiple ATMs but they were all out of money expect for the visa ones. In the end I started going around shops that accepted mastercards as payment options and explained my situation in my crappy Spanish. The first lady agreed to do it for 5% but then didnt charge me at all. Now with money, I took a couple of buses to get to San Juan del Sur on the Pacific coast where I ... read more

Those damn roosters kept me up all night, well at least the one directly outside my window did, but they´re all pretty much at fault. I decided today that I was going to try and walk up to the top of the cliff on the north end of the beach and check out the view. I headed out of town and started to follow a dirt road in the general direction of the cliff. I asked a directions a couple of times and each time was told I was headed in the right direction, and that it wasn´t very far. After 2 hours of wandering around I was pretty much lost and really no closer to reaching my goal. Luckily I did discover the north end of the beach which made the trip back much quicker ... read more

Firstly, apologies for my tardiness in updating this folks. Although I´ve only actually been out of Central America for just over a week, it already seems a long time ago. That probably says something about how much was crammed into my first week in Peru, but we'll save that for a different tale. Last time we spoke, your intrepid traveller (that's me) was getting sick and tired of cities, and wanted to head somewhere for a bit of peace and quiet, ideally with somewhere to swim, perhaps a bit of hiking, hammocks, and a monkey butler. Luckily, all of that lay nearby (bar the butler, but I got over that), just 30 minutes away from Granada on a chicken bus. By now, you´ve hopefully guessed that being as it was a chicken bus, it took over ... read more

Here's a long-in-the-making update to the final couple of weeks in our trip...(for those who don't know we are back in the states and returning to bellingham soon...after some more thanksgiving leftovers)... We began our drive into Nicaragua by leaving the town of San Lorenzo (Honduras) after spending a couple of days in the company of our friend Luke and his friend Cindy. We all rode together for about an hour before we split off for different border crossings. The Honduras-Nicaragua border was pretty relaxed and it was one of the first times we didn't find ourselves beating down termidors trying to "assist us". After waiting about an hour or so for the border aduana to get off his lunch break, we got the motorcycle stamped in the country and were off..... unfortunately as soon as ... read more

Last night I treated myself to a killer meal. To cap off an awesome day of surfing I dropped $20 at this beach side restuarant. It was perfect listen to the wave crash and watching the lighting storm in the horizon. Now back home $20 may get you an entree and maybe one drink. Here in Nicaragua it will get you - Shrimp Cerviche - 2 pina colada - 1 whole fish fish in white sauce and a bunch of shrimp - salad - soup I spoke to some expats and they were saying that the average pay here is $2 for a day for 80% of the population but yet people here all have cell phones. I guess it is a status symbol he was explaining. People here would rather purchae a small TV then ... read more

It is good to be back in Suan Juan De Sur. It is odd returning to a place yet at the same time it is comforting. Still I always seem to get lost in this village. It must be the fung shui messing with me. So I checked into the Xamily hostel and went for a walk. As I was walking down to the market to buy some surf wax, I almost bailed and slid a few feet almost into a pole. Turns out I just stepped on a giant pile of dog pooh. This mound was unbelievable big and I am suprise these scawny dogs can make such a thing. My forensics skills determine this to be some pretty fresh poop and the culprit probably did not get very far judging by the freshness of ... read more
