Finally the beach! And a great beach it is that I was on before 4 pm the day of arrival. The sand is very fine and dark and gets everywhere, but oh so awesome after the heat and lack of beach of Granada. Ursina and I were in heaven as we are total beach girls!
The first night found us watching the sunset while having a couple of Tonas at a beachside bar/restaurant. Later that night, San Juan had a power outage so out came the candles which only adds to the magic of the moment!
The end of the evening found us at the Iguana Club, right on the beach and on the second floor which is perfect for catching the ocean breeze. We stopped at a dance club on the way home for a nightcap to watch the locals dance, and can they ever dance! I need to take Salsa classes before my trip ends (but I don´t even want to think about that yet..lol)
We spent the following day on the beach where I dug out a chair (thanks for the idea Mark!). The locals thought it was quite amusing as they would stop by
and watch me work. Micheal had told us that they sold Watermelon Icecream in San Juan, and we were very disappointed when we were told they didn´t have any at the time. There were smiles once again on our faces as we strolled the beach with our cones, dripping icecream as the sun melted it faster than we could eat it! Icecream and the beach...2 things I love!
On an earlier morning stroll and picture taking expedition I had come across the fish cleaning house, and the thought of fresh fish for dinner was on my mind all day. Once the 3 of us were together, I suggested that we buy fresh fish and then get the restaurant to cook it. My 2 amigos were all for the idea, so off we went to the cleaning house. Mike, who has been nominated our bargaining agent, proceeded to get us the best deal. The red snapper that we had in mind quickly left as we were shown baskets of fresh huge lobster tails. The deal wasn´t as good as we wanted, and a Nicaragua young man said he could get us a better deal at a friend's house. Off we
went and were happy campers with our 3 lbs of fresh lobster! That is until later when the man we had purchased it came back to our hotel and informed us that the young man who had took us there had pocketed some of the money. Sheeeshhh! Lesson learned for all 3 of us.
Off we went to the restaurant from the previous night to see if they could cook our lobster. Upon our arrival we discovered a newly hatched turtle nest. It is so inspiring watching these tiny creatures trying to make their way to the ocean. We were told by Steve, the owner of the restaurant, that the mother had laid her eggs very close to the restaurant, however a homeless person was watching her at the time and Steve was afraid that he would come back later to rob the nest as turtle eggs are a delicacy, and very expensive, but totally illegal. Steve ended up moving the eggs to a secret spot which was about 7 feet away from the original spot. Many people by this time were gathering around to see the baby turtles, and a man who appeared to know what he was
talking about told everyone that we should all take a couple each and take them closer to the beach to guarantee their survival from the claws of birds. I didn´t have to be told twice and I was scooping up 2 little turtles with a handful of sand beneath their tiny bodies. Whan an experience to watch the ocean take them away and start their new life. The world is truly a beautiful and amazing place!
Steve's restaurant did not have the facilities to cook our lobster, so farther down the beach we sauntered. Again, Mike negotiated the cooking price, and what we would get with our catch. Our meal of rice, fries, salad and 4 (yes, FOUR lobster tails) each was delicious! They know how to cook it perfectly and we were all so stuffed and proud of ourselves for the great score!
San Juan has been a joy for 2 days, but Ometepe is calling!
