It is good to be back in Suan Juan De Sur. It is odd returning to a place yet at the same time it is comforting. Still I always seem to get lost in this village. It must be the fung shui messing with me. So I checked into the Xamily hostel and went for a walk. As I was walking down to the market to buy some surf wax, I almost bailed and slid a few feet almost into a pole. Turns out I just stepped on a giant pile of dog pooh. This mound was unbelievable big and I am suprise these scawny dogs can make such a thing. My forensics skills determine this to be some pretty fresh poop and the culprit probably did not get very far judging by the freshness of ... read more

My niece's ex-boyfriend came to visit us a few days after my niece left. He was very friendly and told us that he had bought the SUV for my niece and since he didn't need the car, we could use it for as long as we wanted. He told us he'd be around if we needed anything else. He continued to make these little visits every once in a while to check up on us and would often hang out and want to talk. Sometimes for hours! I tried to be nice because I love his son, who is the sweetest little guy you'd ever want to meet, and looks just like my niece when she was a baby. He tried his best to make "friends" with us. We'd never met him until coming to Nicaragua. ... read more

Well it turns out that you can´t stay in one country for more than 90 days without having to pay some sort of a fine. So to get around this Steve, Ali, and I all took a long weekend to travel to neighbooring Nicaragua for a few days so we could renew our visas and then come back to Costa Rica with a fresh 90 days. We decided to go to a small fishing community called San Juan Del Sur that is becoming known for its beautiful beaches and its great surfing. We caught a taxi on Thursday from our house to San Jose at 3:00 in the morning so we could make it to the bus stop for our 5:00am departure. The buses that we were taking were run by a company called Transnica and ... read more

I woke up this morning and unlike back home, instead of checking the stock market I check how many new mosquito bites I have. I thought I had fortified my bed with a mosquito net but still managed to receive 5 new ones. Damn why can´t my stocks perform as consistent as these mosquito bites. It was a rough sleep last night. I was partying with the 3 guys from El Savatore and called it an early night but they kept going. In the morning I was woken up by a combination of roosters, dogs and a very annoying car alarm. It must be a local with his first car alarm because he had set it to the most annoying setting. It pretty much rang everytime someone bumped it or farted, and it wasn´t a short ... read more

When my niece left San Juan del Sur, she left behind some furniture, an SUV, a 13 year old American Maltese puppy dog, (that we would take care of for a year before sending him on to Miami to join her), and a Nicaraguan family that worked for her. Shortly after arriving in San Juan, my niece hired Monica, the mother of four children, to be her nanny and help around the house. Before that, Monica's family had gotten along on the little money her husband Juan could make from the odd construction jobs he might find. Monica would also bring in a little extra money by occasionally cleaning houses or doing other people's laundry by hand. The family lived in a ramshackle house on a hill on the back end of town. The house belonged ... read more

Last night I ended up counting up all my Colones in change and wanted to spend it all before leaving for Nicaragua in the morning. It was happy hours and the bartender was my new best friend. I must of unloaded a ton of change on him and he was quite happy because he needed for the night. 6 drinks later and it was time for bed. I got too drunk and had to bail on the Volcano tour which I heard was boring to do on La Fatuna. Everyone tells me to do it in Nica because you actually get to hike up there. In the morning I met up with Charlotte and Natalie to catch the 6am bus to Nica. We ended up taking the local bus so it was a pretty hardcore ride ... read more

I woke up today to the sounds of roosters that would not stop. I looked at my watch and it´s 6am. Time stands still and at times completely forgotten when you travel. So I hit the shower and the water pressure is non existence. The shower head was defective so the only water pressure was spraying against the side of the wall and not straight so I had to hump the wall and balance myself to get the soap off. You gotta love these $5 rooms. So far I have gone from spending $20 a night traveling the first 2 weeks with friends from Vancouver to hitting $5 places with other traveling mates that are on a budget because they are traveling for a year. As a result I got bitten 15 times the first night ... read more

Tim version: * Interesting trip to Maderas including a run in with a river and my pack and lots of water. * Surfed. And Chilled. And then surfed a little more. The ¨shit I wish I had of not laughed at Morgan about zip lock bags¨version: Ok, so a little backtrack, Morgan the chick from New York... she´s organised. REALLY organised. She had medication for things I´d never heard of and that she didn´t have but just in case, all sorts of other goodies, and everything in waterproof and zip lock bags! We had a good laugh at this back in San Juan, but that came back to bite me on the ass but I´m getting ahead of myself a little... The history of Nicaragua is one of civil wars, political violence and revolutionary unrest. When I told people I was going to Nicaragua, their first question was always, "why?", and the second was, "isn't there a war going on there?" Well, at least I wasn't the only person who knew very little about Nicaragua, even though our own government has been very involved with this small country in the past. During my time in Nicaragua, I decided to learn a little about the country's history. With the help of guide books, biographies, history books, and Wikipedia, this is some of what I learned. Since Christopher Columbus became the first European to reach Nicaragua in 1502, and later explored the Mosquito Coast on Nicaragua's east side, the country has been invaded by those greedy to grab for ... read more

Our weekend in Roatan was great. We stayed at Posada Arco Iris in a studio apartment with its own kitchen. It is situated steps away from a white sand beach and there are 2 resident monkies that are eager to play and hold your hand. Days were spent at the beach, suntanning and snorkeling- there is good snorkeling swimming distance off the shore. Nights were spent with Ryan cooking up amazing meals, Megan relaxing in the hammock with wine. Seems unfair but she had to do dishes. We had our own little deck to relax on and had many lizards, geckos and frogs coming to visit us. The only downside to Roatan were the expensive ferry to get there and away and the many sand fleas at the beach. Either suntan on the deck or use ... read more
