well, i'm in nicaragua! the last time i posted i was wrapping up el salvador and all worked out well. for our last day, we went to the Oscar Romero March celebrating the anniversary of his death which was amazing. It was so interesting because we met up with almost all the people who we had met during our stay from El Salvador. That includes people from the non-profits we met and people from the rural communities. There were thousands of people who were there to remember the life and work of Romero. Again, it just goes to show the unifying force he had with people from El Salvador. There was one really awkward part where there was a group of kids, probably in high school, who were marching and chanting different songs and slogans. One ... read more

After two days in Granada full of relaxation, cooking our own meals, beautiful colonial buildings, and bars with names like "The Zebra Lounge," we were OFF! to the pinnacle stop in our trip...Isla de Ometepe! for volcanoes, farming, nature, and welcome isolation. We had planned all weekend to take the 3:00 ferry across the choppy, expansive vastness of Lago de Nicaragua (seriously, look at a map, it's huge) and were proud to arrive early to the dock (early for us, though it may have been 2:45) only to discover that the twice-weekly trip books up quickly... too quickly... and tickets had been sold out for over two hours. Whoops! Sitting in the cab, bummed, bursting with excitement and momentum, we made the split-second decision to take a bus south toward Rivas, the other town with ferries ... read more

One of the more interesting sites in town...

After the most excruciating bus ride to date, we made it through the border and into Nicaragua at our first stop - San Juan del Sur. Fortunately for us there was also a Harley Davidson Convention on the same weekend and rooms were scarce. We stayed two nights, biked to town, ate some food and went on my late Valentines day present, a baby turtle tour! We were given a short intro to what we were about to experience and then put on an outside seated army truck to 4x4 an hour to the reserve that we would witness the hatchings at. The turtles usually hatch in 3 day increments and this was the second night so we were guarenteed good sightings. We were only allowed small red lights and slowly walked through the sand on ... read more

Hey everyone...sorry I suck at this blogging thing. All is good, still in San Juan Del Sur. Really great place with lot´s of amazing people. I´ve been staying on the neighbouring beach at a campsite/hostel called Matilda´s. Absolutely stunning beach with barely anyone on it. At night I fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves and crazy howler monkeys. The surfing is great but I am getting the snot kicked out of me. I was all cocky and rented a really short board and basically got tumbled in the whitewash all day long. But after many bruised shins I finally got the hang of it and could somewhat hold my own...in the much smaller waves of course. Than the other day I took a nice nasty spill and broke my fin off my board which ... read more

Off on another adventure, long overdue... Ken, Kim and I headed to Central America for three weeks, starting in Nicaragua and finishing in Costa Rica (as Canada is in the grips of cold and Winter, this seemed to be the perfect destination!) Flew into Liberia CR, and hopped a cab to Penas Blancas and the Nicaraguan border (Liberia turned out to be a little closer than Managua to our first destination, and the airfare was cheaper as well..). Border was interesting; cab dropped us off at the Costa Rican immigration office, strangely no lineup...after a 3/4 kilometer hike across the border (with surf board in tow) we picked up the rental car, made our way through Nicaraguan immigration and off to Villa Pavela at Playa Remanso! Friends of ours were gracious enough to offer up their ... read more

The day started with breakfast at Congo Coffee while we waited for the surfboard rental place to open. An hour later we had our boards and booked a ride with Indian Face - which was basically a commuter truck with no suspension, hard wood benches for seats, and a distinct possibility that we'd crack our head open on the roof or break our tailbones before we actually arrived. We spent the day at Maderas beach, where we used our surf and boogie boards in the cooler than expected surf until the wind picked up enough that we couldn't handle it anymore. The beach was great - remote, not too overpacked considering the time of year, but the facilities were less than spectacular. Bugs everywhere, non-existent flushing, and bees guarding the water basin you need to use ... read more

Yesterday we ventured on the long march to the San Ramon waterfall on Ometepe. The day started out easy enough - breakfast at the hotel and a leisurely morning of reading and enjoying nature. We had decided to go on the 3 km hike up to the San Ramon waterfall - about 1-2 km from our hostel and then 3 km to take us about 1/3 of the way up Volcan Maderas. We had heard the hike was rough, but that hiking the whole volcano was even worse. I figured if we could make it to the waterfall we'd know whether or not to attempt the whole thing. It's a good thing we started small.... Yael joined Wes and I for the hike, and we headed back down the main road to the entrance, where we ... read more

So I´m currently in the city of San Salvador in El Salvador, on my way to Guatemala. I have a few days backlog to update on, so I´ll get to that now. So I mostly just hung around town on the 26th, I signed up for a surf lesson for the 27th and was looking forward to it. I´d finally get to try the sport that makes the beaches of Central America so famous. So I got up bright and early on the 27th, ready to hit the water and try my luck. However, my instructor was sick. And I was too lazy to look around town to organize another lesson, so I settled for booking one for the next day. While staying in the hostel I´d heard that there was a local bar that played ... read more

So Christmas evening I went to a turtle reserve to see baby turtles hatching. It started with an hour lecture at the hostel I´m staying at, where everyone was informed about the beach we´d be visiting, the types of turtles we´d see, as well as a brief history and summary of turtles and the turtle hatching process. After the lecture I boarded the truck that would be carry everyone to the reserve. It was a bumpy, hour long ride in the dark until we reached the reserve. When we got to the reserve we were shown baskets filled to the brim with small, baby turtles. I think these were turtles who had been hatched, or found during the daytime, and they were brought to the reserve building for safety until the evening. We brought the two ... read more

Yes, yes, we realize that with an internet connection our blogs should, or could, be more regular. However, since the glorious day, other bloggers have dubbed their day of connection dia del internet, life has been whirring by at an alarming rate. Our journey to Nicaragua, despite being mandated, was superb. Nicaragua is beautiful and significantly less developed than Costa Rica. The Nicaraguans that we met were very eager to help us, to get to know us, and to speak with us about life in Nicaragua and the rest of the world. It was a big difference from the tourist service industry in Costa Rica where people have been visiting for over twenty five years. The people we spoke to in Nicaragua spoke of the great changes in the past five years and how the tourists ... read more
