So as I said in the last blog we left Tortuguero at 7am for the boat+bus+bus combination back to San Jose. If everything arrived on time we would hit the city around lunchtime and then the plan was to see what buses were leaving to get us to the pacific coast. Inparticular we wanted to get to a small place called Playa Samara which seemed to get good reviews in the LP for being quiet and unspoilt. The boat journey went well and we both really enjoyed it as it was sunny in comparison to the pouring rain we arrived in. From the boat we were actually met by a taxi, we think this was because we were the only westerners travelling that day so no need for a big bus. The taxi driver took us ... read more

Hola amigos! Really I should be writing this blog in Spanish as we have now started our spanish classes, but I think I´ll have to have a few more lessons before I´m up to that standard. Maybe next week... Well, we last left you when we arrived in Granada, which as always when we write our blogs seems a whole world away from where we are now. After spending our first day wondering round the town of Granada we decided to take it easy the next day and went to the "Monkey Hut" on Laguna de Apoyo, a little hut right on this gorgeous lake in the Apoyo crater. The hut had kayaks and a basket ball court so we just spent the day having fun! We also ventured up another volcano in Nicaragua (brave after ... read more

Kate¨- So we had a bit of an akward flight to Costa Rica from L.A- not because anything went wrong but just because it was at 2 am and we had to stop over in Guatemala for about and hour before getting to San Jose so all in all is was around a 7 hour journey. By the time we got our luggage and hailed a taxi to take us to our hotel it was around 10am. We got to our hotel, a typical Best Western that we had pre booked and just vegged out for a bit in our room. After a bit of veg'in we decided to have a bit of an explore of San Jose. San Jose, 'down town' where we were is your typical busy, hot smelly, dirty city. Luckily for us ... read more

Afternoon all, Apologies for not updating more frequently but our time in Tamarindo was rather relaxed so thought it would be easier to give a big update at the end with all the chat. We are now back in San Jose overnight and we fly to Cancun tomorrow. Our first month was spent in "Playa Tamarindo" a fairly small town on the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The main reason we went was the to learn Spanish at the language school, and despite a number of very late night and challenging mornings I think we got a fairly good grounding. Other than learning (which is obviously what we dedicated the majority of our time and academic brain-power to) Tamarndo was just an awesome place to be. Amazing surfing, which i hit hard ... read more

Well hullo there everybody. Hope you´re all well, thought it was time for an update. We arrived in Playa Tamarindo last Sunday and we´ve been here for a week now and its cuuushty. We´re at a Spanish school so we´re doing four hours lessons in the mornings then have the afternoons off. Tamarindo is a prime surf town on the pacific side of Costa Rica and everyday we walk 50 metres from our house and we´re on a two-mile long tropical beach with coconuts and palm trees and iguanas and howler monkeys and all sorts. Ive been out surfing once and it is sick, gonna try and head out this afternoon and maybe get Brad to try. There are loads of peeps from all over the world at the school and the night life here is ... read more

We arrive in the much over talked Tamarindo, where we were expecting it to be LA. It was nice, pricier than everywhere else but we scored a good deal. As Ross and I went to check out a hostel, we sent Danny and Barbara to a hotel it recommended in our book (they don´t do hostels) and when we met back they had no rooms only apartments and she let them have the apartment for the price of a room. So while they have a two story flat of luxury with a full kitchen and living room, we stay the night in some dorm room hostel with 6 beds (thankfully no one else in them though). At about 3 am, the power went out and our fan shut off (NOT good) and we discovered there were ... read more

In retrospect, this is what we should have called the blog. **WARNING** Emetophobic readers, this blog contains faintly unpleasant references to nausea and the consequences of drinking to excess Costa Rican immigration is what you find in the afterlife if you've spent your days sticking pins into kittens and getting on the tube before people have had a chance to get off. Luckily it only seemed like we spent an eternity there, and in actual fact it was a shade under 4 hours. This wouldn't have been too bad if it had been for a decent reason, and not a 'lunch break'. Gentle reader, I advice you to seek employment in the Costa Rican civil cervice, for lunch commences at 10:30, and finishes not until 2pm! This makes the French seem like workaholics! Unlike the French, ... read more
