Ok - our last stop was supposed to be three relaxing days in Costa Rica....or at least that was the intention. As it turned out, we had a couple of nice days at the beach, but the hassle of getting to and from Tamarindo made it less enjoyable than it could have been. The highlight was watching a sea turtle lay about 60 or so eggs on the beach...very cool. Anyway, we are now in London and are about to run out the door to catch our flight to Uganda. As usual we are running very close to the line, so I've got to keep this short. I hope you're all enjoying the blog - getting it up-to-date kept me busy for the last couple of days in London while it was raining and miserable outside. ... read more

Okay, well i have been told that my lamo blogs lack detail...that is because they are by nature lamo...refer to title. but here goes.... We set of from santa teresa on wednesday hoping to catch the 2-30 bus from malpais...3km up the road. after calling all 20 plus cabs and finding out that none of them were in the area, em, sharron (new travel pal from tofino), and i started to hit hike. we caught a ride on a truck´s flat bed and got some pretty nifty double takes from people along the road. we made it to the bus stop with 20 minutes to spare. but after five minutes of waiting a big 4x4 jeep thingy squeals up and a tico guy hops out and starts motioning to us frantically to get into his truck. ... read more

Arrive in Tamarindo in the early afternoon and find my cameras are missing, doh! The town isn´t even big enough to have a police station and the next town only has a small one so can´t give me a report for insurance! It makes writing these blogs quicker as I have no photos to upload. I sleep all afternoon then explore in the evening. It´s very quiet as low season so not many people about and very heavy rain for 2 hours. I see the guide´s mates but can´t be bothered to go chat to them. Decide to leave the next day but there is no electricity until 2pm so I can´t get my laundry back. I decide to have a surfing lesson instead. The basic technique looks easy enough, it´s just hard to put into ... read more

Well, it was our last day today. The power and internet have been out intermittently, so we haven´t been able to update our blog as often as we like, and we cant put pictures on which sucks, but we will show them to you later. Friday morning after a big breakfast of omlettes and smoothies (mmmm smoothies, I will miss them....) we took a SURFING lesson with Banana Surf, which we all enjoyed thoroughly. Vince and I rented boards for the rest of the day and surfed until we had another monsoon. Rain like I have never seen. Jess (smarter than us) had gone in a little earlier, but by the time V and I got out, the rain was in full force. We walked our surfboards back to the surf shop, and ended up just ... read more

We are know at Playa Tamarindo, also referred to by me (Jenn) as THE BEACH!!!! I only have 15 minutes and the computer is giving me trouble, so this will have to be a little quick and not very creative. Tuesday afternoon we picked up Jess from the airport at Arenal. She was on the plane with one other person on the whole plane, who happened to be Asian! We knew Jess had arrived in Costa Rica when we heard the string of profanities. I think the first thing she said when she saw us was "holy f***ing sh**! She looks like a sweet little innocent well behaved Chinese girl, but she puts any drunken sailor to shame - but somehow its part of her charm. After we picked up Jess, we went for a beautiful ... read more

So today is March 12 and I am almost two weeks behind on this blog, but I have a good excuse I was stuck in this little beach town called Tamarindo! We were told by fellow travellers that once you arrive there you never want to leave, or you get stuck. Well me and laura definately got stuck, we spent 9 days there! The thing is I dont even know where all the time went. Thus far on this trip Tamarindo is the highlite for me, I think it all comes down to all the people we have met. Our hostel was key to our fun in Tamarindo, as soon as we arrived we met so many people. What happens here is you get caught in this routine of waking up early because our rooms get ... read more

After Liberia we headed to the west coast for some more picturesque beaches. First stop was Tamarindo, very nice beach and another place with amazing sunsets. The only problem was it was very touristy, with lots of American holiday makers which in turn made the place expensive. You can tell how much this place has changed in the last 2 years as the info in the lonely planet was very oudated and it looks like the place has at least tripled in size since the book was written. Going from the number of estate agents people are buying land up here fast. We had a look in some of the windows and you can buy some very nice places, 50,000 pounds for a 3 bed house on the beach, I Remember seeing at home that they ... read more

Our Nacho expedition came to a quick end when we mistakenly thought Joe's was closed for a company Holiday Party. Because clearly we had no idea it was Thursday and not Wednesday. From there we wandered to the much publicized Stella's, who demanded a reservation despite 90% of the tables being empty. We made a reservation for Friday night while we there. We ended up at Pizzeria Portofino (see, I wasn't kidding when I said that Ticos love pizza). They also love 80s music. Pretty much all we've heard since we got here is a steady mix of Kenny Loggins, Rod Stewart and Air Supply. I'm not sure what the fascination with 80s music is here, but it is EVERYWHERE. Seriously - it's like being transported to 1986. There are even mullets! Shudder. Post dinner was ... read more

Life at the beach is pretty much what we expected - hot, chill and gorgeous. We got up on the late side this morning, heading back to the Cabinas Cafe for an omelette, panqueques con banana and coffee. Mmmm. On the way back we stopped at Iguana Surf to rent a couple of boards. An 8'6" board for me and a 7 footer for Wes. We spent the morning surfing, although I spent more time falling off than standing up. But it was a good time. And great to be surfing in such warm water. Even in the summer San Diego surf isn't this pleasant. After a few hours we took a break and wandered down the beach. I got a tasty cherry snow cone con leche and Wes stopped in town to get a rashguard. ... read more

A special thanks to everyone for the kind words posted to our blog over the past couple of months. we have been getting a kick out of them and apologize for not being able to respond individually... we simply haven´t learned how. i know, sad. recent event.... with all of the memorable new year´s we have had in seattle, this year we were blessed to have seattle delivered to us in costa rica. colin, keith, mel, paul, howie, micah, and lalo made the journey down to enjoy tropical drinks on the beach as an alternative to the blustery northwest weather. the week flew by with each day packed full of sand and surf followed by evenings of catching up over bottles of imperial and pilsens. for us, the simple joy of sleeping in real beds with ... read more
