All the exercise from the day before wiped me out. I lasted long enough for a quick dinner at the Lava Rocks Cafe (yummy casados pollo), and promptly got back to our room and passed out. This morning we had eaten and packed up the car by 8:30, hoping to get an early start on things. In a fitting conclusion to our time at Arenal we were treated to our best views of the volcano yet on our way out of town. We pulled off the road to find that we could finally see an eruption - boulders rolling down the steamy side of the volcano. That must be what we heard a few nights ago. It was a great site. The second active volcanic eruption I've seen. Pretty cool. The drive from La Fortuna to ... read more

Hola Everyone!· Well sorry for taking so long to update this site, but you know how it is. Foreign country, new language, new people, new places....its all to easy to get carried away and put it off one more day. But not any more. Finally got a good internet connection which suprisingly is free so here it goes, time to update you to the present... So after getting into San Jose at 6 in the morning our first day we decided to get to the beach as fast as we could. Long story short (and some long bus rides later), we arrived in Tamarindo at around 6 in the evening, exhausted after having been awake for most of the past 36 hours. We found a cool little hostel called the Coral Reef and crashed hard. Tamarindo ... read more

Yes I'm almost ashamed to say we're in Tamarindo - without a doubt the most american like, touristy, big real estate business town in Costa Rica. But we do have to see all we can see Our trip here from Santa Teresa was interesting enough. Seriously, Ali and I (as I think I've said before) have been so lucky travelling around here. Always getting just the right bus, perfect timing, meeting great people who go out of their way to help us. And this trip was no different (thank goodness 'cos it took 11 hours). We arrived at our Coral Reef hostel at about 10pm and immediately bumped into the group of italian guys we shared our hostel with in Santa Teresa! We decided to stay 5 nights here, and are only being charged $4 per ... read more

More beach time... Trish rented a surfboard and played around in the waves for a few hours. I wandered around taking some photos. We spent some time working out where in Nicaragua that we wanted to go.... read more

We were really motivated in the morning and went out for a run along the beach at 7:30am - despite the time, it was cooking hot already and we came back dripping. After a swim, we went and exchanged our books and had a look around. The real estate industry is booming with a lot of americans buying up land and developing condos, etc. After a delicious lunch we went for a surf lesson at the Iguana surf school - it was fun and Trish had been looking forward to it for ages. After catching her first wave, she was lucky enough to pop out of the water just in time to be hit on the forehead by her falling surfboard and was left with a big goose-egg bump. We caught some good waves. We watched ... read more

We caught the Interbus to Tamarindo, a touristy beach town on the pacific coast. It is the most commercialized place we have been so far - they even have Burger King/Pizza Hut/Subway/etc. However, the beach is good for swimming and surfing. We checked into Cabinas Zullymar, which was close to the beach and also had a nice pool. We spent the day swimming and watched the sunset.... read more

Hola everyone, how are you all doing back in sunny Canada. I'm doing great down here. Yesterday Natalie and I had quite an interesting day right from the start. We decided to take a nice little leisurely jaunt up to Santa Rosa National Park for the day. Check out some animals, hike around in the cool forest, and we were pretty stoked about it. Things didn't quite work out as we had expected. We picked up some random baked goods and got on the 7am bus for Liberia. It was easy and cheap to get there, less than a dollar and two bus rides later we were dropped off on the side of the highway at the entrance to the park. No one told us that is was a 7km walk just to get to the ... read more

Bring on the white sandy palm tree swept beaches of Costa Rica!!!! After an altogether painless border crossing.....lets rephrase that....The best and fastest border crossing we have had yet! We arrived in the famously touristy town of Tamarindo. We weren't sure what to expect because most backpackers are not too complementory about the place...most call it 'Tama Gringo', which says it all! Besides the accomodation being on the expensive side (not set up for backpackers at all) as the town caters very much for the smoozy holiday. Mainly Americans flying in for 10 days or so to blow alot of cash. Ken had great visions of doing a week of Surf Camp at a great place called Witchesrock, but at well over $1000 a week we soon blew off that idea! Affordable if we were just ... read more

We weren´t expecting Tamarindo to be all that as according to the guide books it is built-up and very Americanised. So we were very pleasantly surprised when we turned up that afternoon from Tortuguerro to find a large gorgeous palm-fringed beach with white sand and very few people. The town is also very pretty. Yes it is Americanised in a sense that there are a ton of expensive boutiques and souvenir shops, and most of the real estate is owned by Americans, but from what I´d read in the books I was expecting something like Spain with those awful beachfront highrises and loud pumping music all day long...not so...so we stayed 4 nights instead of 3. Each day we enjoyed the spectacular Pacific sunset, sipping the most amazing mango drinks we had ever had (100% pure ... read more
